@alfaclass A good trucker can tell the difference between towing a loaded, part loaded or empty trailer on the back, just by the resitence and effect on the acceleration of the weight on the unit.
There no way you can tell me that a professional truck driver would not know that there is something wrong. I agree that from the driver seat, you cannot anyything for about 10 feet infront of you.
However actions of this trucker are unexcusable. He put lives at risk and should not be on the road.
@Vertuas1 1 ton car doesnt make much of a diffrence to a 14ton XF480 you can pull 17ton easily without noticing it on hills, given conditions and the fact tht the woman conducted an undertake means she was in the wrong, this was edent at the court hearing which found the woman had undertook she was fined £200 and given 6 points not only did the court clear the lorry driver the traffic commissioner did too, verdict as per court the woman was at fault.

@KGzII It was a setup i think when i first saw it on the news. And its doesn't say Arclio, It says Arclid. its a transport company i see them all the time by my hoiuse.
This is typical of so called 'professional' drivers. Drivers of trucks, buses, taxis. How did the driver not notice the car (and yes I have been in a similar style truck).
A small hatchback passed me on a motorway yesterday in the centre lane, with a truck less than 2m behind it. It was pouring with rain and poor visibility.
On the way home travelling on a narrow A road a bus passed us (with passengers on board). The drive had a cup of coffee in one hand.
@c53204 and you are typical of the busy body car driver always thinking you are a perfect driver when you haven't had any form of training or testing since passing your test! Let me guess the similar style truck was a 7.5 tonner you hired to move house! If you had a hgv license it may entitle you to coment on othes driving!
@pimpUK1 Actually I passed a driving test two years ago. It was my Part 2 to become a Driving instructor. I obtained my part 3 a few months later. I have also passed a IAM test and a Class 1 test a year before that. I had an HGV licence (obtained courtesy of the Armed Forces) over 20 years ago. Quite willing to supply pictures with the relevant details blanked out if you so wish.
Oh and how was I in a similar truck. My brother drives one.
@c53204 Where is your commercial experience of driving? You don't have any then! Army driving is different, the only big HGVs are Oshkosh and Foden Wreckers (being replaced now), everything else is tiny. You don't get the same experience driving in the Army as you do commercially. I had never driven a artic before I had left or done any difficult reversing. As for the driving instructor test I nearly did that this year as part of my redundancy but it would bore me to death and money was low.
For all the people slating women drivers; if you read the story in the news you would know the truck clipped the back of the car so it was his fault!!!! God, some people, and this is what causes most truck > car accidents because the truck driver is so high up they don't see the car unless they look preperly, you can imagine it's easy to assume there's no car when the roads are quiet.
AND the driver is a VET so she's not stupid all you sexist pricks!
@Abbey44ful if you search the net for the follow up, the police reconstructed the accident and blamed the female driver for not checking properly when changing from lane one to two. Most accidents involving cars are the fault of cars hence why HGV insurance is relatively cheap for the amount of miles an average truck will do in a year and the cost of a HGV, £100,000+ (not including load). The HGV driver has had 3 driving tests and years of experience and reversed more miles than she’s driven!
@Abbey44ful You have to realize that a truck driver go's threw exstensive training to drive that huge thing...most of the time it is the cars fault cause it takes the length of a football field to stop a 80,000 lb vehicle and cars thinks they can just cut n front expecting them to stop on a dime...its not gonna happen! They are trained professionals out there and more then likely its not drugs its stupid car drivers not realizing..
Amazing this was on the news, as today I have just witnessed a Dutch lorry do the exact same thing to a BMW convertible on the M62. The driver was just driving along, lorry pulled in behind her but clipped the back of the car. Over 400m down the middle lane before the lorry driver realised and eventually pulled over, BMW still stuck to its front...

Surely the truck driver can feel at least SOME load on the engine and realise something is up. Pushing a car sideways at 60mph has got to be noticeable at least somewhat. (Equivalent to dragging a human along behind a car)
@TimpBizkit Guessing there is cruise control involved, all that would have happened is the hgv engine working a tiny bit harder, considering what they are able to pull (and push) without much effort. Now if it was a Bentley that lorry would've been gasping for a while and become noticable.
@TimpBizkit exactly what do you base those numbers on? once the car is sliding it would take very little power to keep it sliding. also those trucks only have around 350 horsepower to begin with and they can pull tens of thousands of pounds so a 2000 pound clio would be like pushing nothing
@nicoarsenault Road speed = 60mph or about 25 m/s tyre friction, car weighing 1.25 tons (12,500 N) friction coefficient 0.8 (10,000 N force). Power = 250kw or 335 hp. Pushing/pulling a load on wheels involves very little friction and is totally different to dragging it sideways/with the brakes on. Of course, the lorry could just be heavy and be gradually slowing down.
@TimpBizkit although you are correct in theory you have not factored in many of the variables, for example the material use to pave the road, how much friction a car tire produces once it is already sliding, even if it was a sunny day (warm dry pavement), ect...
And that kids, is why we don't undertake or cut people up on motorways :P
I'm glad the lorry driver got off though. The reenactments were kinda intriguing to watch.
Theyre saying the woman tried to cut infront of the lorry and as she's come in too close the front of the lorrys clipped the back end of her car and she's ended up turning into the front. Which does make sense.
Poor guy, he was nearly in tears when he came out of court.
According to tonights news the North West Traffic Commissioner might still revoke his LGV licence. Although the court decided not to the Commissioner also has the authority to remove it and is under no legal obligation to follow the Courts decision. So the poor sod might still end up losing everything.
Obviously she didn't check her offside blind spot and mirrors before pulling in to the middle lane after undertaking the tanker or maybe she is just a crap driver. Its most likely to be both. Car drivers in general think they can get away with doing stupid manoeuvres in front of and around HGV's because they are slow. People do not see the dangers and understand the physics of getting involved in a collision with a vehicle 40 times the weight their own.
@millar5001 - "Car drivers in general ? " Don't you mean inexperienced car drivers ? For every car driver that drives like an idiot there is one truck driver that doesn't fully appreciate how much weight he is carrying. Thats why you see so many trucks overturned on roadsides due to a lack of anticipation. I drive around 50,000 miles a year, ok small change compared to many lorry drivers. The majority of lorry drivers are good just as the majority of business high mileage car drivers are good.
@ALBIONTYKE I actually meant all drivers with no experience of driving anything above 7.5 tonne. As for business drivers in my experience they seem to be the most throttle happy on the motorway in their underpowered rep cars and cause the most animosity amongst other drivers because they think they can get away with cutting you up and tailgating because they got an Audi badge. Obviously I don't mean all business drivers but a high percentage. I'm sure there are plenty of bad truckers as well.
another point...ANYONE towing a trailer (even as small as a jetski or one like you can buy from halfords) is NOT allowed in lane 3...its 3 points on your licence and a fine if you get caught...i see it all the time....THE MUPPETS
the truck driver was completely cleared of any wrong doing..the car driver joined the A1 off a slip road right in front of truck probably thinking she had right of way...WRONG!!!....she should be charged with driving without due care and attention......truck drivers use motorways all the time so know the system...she obviously did not...thats the trouble with drivers that only use the roads rarely...she was luckly not to be killed...
Attempting to justify this is nothing short of criminal in itself. This Cowboy - I refuse to call him a Driver as that is a direct insult to all GOOD truck drivers HAD to have known he hit something. The attempt to justify his continuing to drive without checking is nothing short of attempting to justify near vehicular homicide. And as for saying he couldn't see anything in front, that's just as much bullshit as the rest of it. This guy disgusts me.
@KiwiKugai If both vehicles were travelling at roughly the same speed the level of impact would of been minimal and could of easily of been dismissed as driving over a rough section of road. If you pause the video at 0:16 you can see that the Clio is below his line of site and the cab does not have the relevant exterior mirrors positioned above the windscreen showing the HGV driver what is immediately in front of his bumper. I don't think these mirrors are required by law but perhaps should be.
@KiwiKugai i think you should sit in the cab of a what looks to me a Daf XF and then comment, as for 60 mph while lorries can go 60 mph on motorways they are ALL limited to 56mph some less. I cant believe how some people can judge this LGV so harshly when none of us were there, do you REALLY think he would have just carried on knowing it was there??? really?
A tanker driver from Lancashire who was shown on YouTube driving along a motorway with a car trapped in front of his cab has been cleared of any wrongdoing.
A hearing before North West Traffic Commissioner Beverley Bell was told the accident happened when the Clio driver attempted to undertake Mr Tomlinson's tanker in an "ill-advised" manoeuvre.
After a thorough investigation by West Yorkshire Police they have concluded that my client is innocent and he has been vindicated of any wrongdoing.
Verdict=Aquitted. England=Fucked (economically and judiciously). Question: if he was aquitted on the basis of the fact that he could not see hear or smell the car, the question ''should' he have able to see, hear or smell the car, either when it was attached to the front (which looks likely looking at the video) or before it attached itself to the front, can still be asked.
There might have been no intent; but what about negligence you retart of a judge. And what is comendable about reversing?
@brendangray So, you are saying because someone else's poor driving skills should cost a man's lively hood? Do you know all the facts? I don't but the matter was fully investigated after this turned up on Youtube, and a verdict has reached. accept it... and why the expetives??
You are right : I don't know all the facts, and in my note I never said I did. After me and and a friend looked at the video, we both said: it would should be extremley unlikey that he should have not be punished for what he did, let alone comended. We gave more of an intuitive answer. As for the expletives, the question can easy be asked: why not the expletives. And I don't have to explain this anyway, esp. alone to someone I don't know.
@brendangray HE din't DO anything the other driver caused the accident, by not looking before moving right into the middle lane. You were right, there has been an injustice.. the car driver was never charged with "driving without due care and attention" Justice failed again, If you care to read or watch the news, despite retaining his LGV licence.. I doubt he will drive lorries again... because of the trauma caused by it appearing on here. The "kangaroo court" mentality in here is despicable.
26/05/2010 - Driver cleared of any blame, Clio undertook HGV from slip road. They complain about blind spots on HGV's but they don't mention anything about the stupidty of undertaking HGV's.
what a stupid thick cunt that wagon driver is and yes he got off with it in court wtf the judge needs sacking as a matter of urgency i get get points for careless driving and this twat is pushing a car at 70 come on what the fuck is going on
@hanghoodiescum It didn't go to court.. there was nothing to judge, the incident was investigated and measurements and views from the cab were established, and the Northwest Traffic Commissioner concluded the lorry driver was not at fault, and in fact praised the lorry driver for remaining calm one he knew there was a problem. West Yorkshire Police were advised by the CPS not to prosecute.
Also... it shows the lack of the intelligence of some posters in here who think is cool to use expletives
use of expletives has got nothing to do with intelligence you retard. I'm and Oxford grad (with hons), and I swear all the time. There have been lots have studies on on the positive use of expletives in the course of everyday prose.
if you are so offended by expletives, then, firstly, learn how to spell the word (see your first note). Secondly, if you are so offended by expletives go to the cinema and watch a P.G. or something, even take mummy or daddy if you have to, and stop looking at my expletives, if they offend your sense of morality so much.
@brendangray LOL, it's a bad sign when you get down to arguing about spelling, hehe.. it means you ran out of steam You can't get over the fact that the car driver nearly caused a tragic accident, the car drive is still working, the lorry driver is too traumatised to work. 29 years driving experienced messed up because of someone else's mistake, and she got off without charge.
all I know is that is seems extemely unlikely that he 'shouldn't' have seen the car from the clip I watched. 29 yrs experience can equally count against you when you get complacent in a job. I don't know the real detail, only the clip and the comments and verdict from court. Which I believe is enough to as least have an opinion about something. Again, what is he doing in the fast lane anyway? the highway code has a stricture on this. I think I am prob talking to another lorry driver:ad hominem.
o yeah, it is the middle lane. But just because I go that wrong it doesn't mean I know nothing does it? I know that your P.G. is about to start at around 9pm, and you better hurry if your gonna make it.
Okay : middle lane (truck driver). Just beause I got that wrong though it doesn't entail the fact that I know nothing (go to school). I know that your P.G. begins at 9pm and you better hurry if your gonna make it.
@brendangray You are wrong on every count, as clever as you are, you know nothing about this clip. You are happy to be an armchair barrister, judge and jury. Don't let me burst your little bubble. I just listen to the facts as they are reported.
I am not sure that you could know all the facts unless you were in the court room which I doubt, so the evidence you are positing your conclusion on is also limited. I probably looked at the same news reports that you have had access to, and I think it is a crime in itself that he has gotten away being praised for his actions. The judge said: "As he could not see, hear , or smell the car this is why he will not be punished.". And this is not good enough, in my opinion and many others too
@brendangray Again you know nothing, there was no court case, from the BBC news website "The lorry driver, from Lancashire, appeared before North West Traffic Commissioner Beverley Bell."
The police had confirmed that the driver could not see the car from his driving position, they took measurements. I think its a crime the the driver of the car was not charged for unsafe driving.
please can you copy and paste the article which claims that measurements were taken and that it was confirmed that the driver could not see the car from his seat.
@brendangray You will have to look on the BBC North West tonight website, it was spoken by one of the announcers on the lunchtime edition of the program.
@brendangray There's no such thing as a 'fast lane'. Lanes 2 & 3 are for overtaking ONLY!!! The 'fast lane' a concept dreamed up by wankers who think lane 3 of the motorway is for dangerously tailgating the car in front in order to intimidate them into moving over so the prick (usually a BMW or an Audi driver) can do 100mph+ thinking they can stop in time. The stupid cunt bitch in the car should have been jailed and forced to pay compensation to the HGV driver.
what a twat you are. he isnt doing 70 and he cant see fuck all. the car driver made all the fuckups. but you think its wrong that you got points for careless driving. you should get a ban ya nonce
@MrNyalPurcell Have you ever driven a lorry of this size? A 750kg car has really no significance to a 40 tonne lorry. People who drive these vehicles will tell you they have large blind spot. The driver of the car joined the motorway from a slip road which joins the middle lane which effectively meant she was undertaking the lorry and clipped the frontwhich spun the car 90 degree's onto his bumper.
The local Transport Police Commissioner as commended the way the driver reacted to the incident and has allowed him to keep his HGV. The driver as said he will have to consider whether he will ever drive a heavy goods vehicle again, as the publicity surrounding this incidence as caused him so much stress.
It has just been confirmed on the local Northwest England news program the driver of the lorry was not to blame, and after a thorough investigation it was found there was no way he could have seen the car trapped at the front of his lorry. The car driver had joined the A1 and was undertaking the lorry when it collided with the lorry before being flipped onto the lorries front bumper.
Omgosh my mum just told me to type this in after reading the cars owners story poor lady and stupid truck driver wasnt looking very well Luckerly the lady survived with no injuries but as for her little Renolt Clio thats a different story Xxx
@winnsprincess The lorry driver wasn't stupid, in fact he was credited as he could not see or hear the car as people who drive these vehicles will tell you they have large blind spot. The driver of the car joint the motorway from a slip road which joins the middle lane which effectively meant she was undertaking the lorry and clipped the front of his lorry which spun the car 90 degree's onto his bumper.
@philuk2000 the lorry drivers a retab, how can u push a car along like that without realising. He should have had his licence taken away from him for life

@c53204 and you are typical of the busy body car driver always thinking you are a perfect driver when you haven't had any form of training or testing since passing your test! Let me guess the similar style truck was a 7.5 tonner you hired to move house! If you had a hgv license it may entitle you to coment on othes driving!
pimpUK1 1 year ago
@pimpUK1 Actually I passed a driving test two years ago. It was my Part 2 to become a Driving instructor. I obtained my part 3 a few months later. I have also passed a IAM test and a Class 1 test a year before that. I had an HGV licence (obtained courtesy of the Armed Forces) over 20 years ago. Quite willing to supply pictures with the relevant details blanked out if you so wish.
Oh and how was I in a similar truck. My brother drives one.
c53204 1 year ago
@c53204 Where is your commercial experience of driving? You don't have any then! Army driving is different, the only big HGVs are Oshkosh and Foden Wreckers (being replaced now), everything else is tiny. You don't get the same experience driving in the Army as you do commercially. I had never driven a artic before I had left or done any difficult reversing. As for the driving instructor test I nearly did that this year as part of my redundancy but it would bore me to death and money was low.
pimpUK1 1 year ago
For all the people slating women drivers; if you read the story in the news you would know the truck clipped the back of the car so it was his fault!!!! God, some people, and this is what causes most truck > car accidents because the truck driver is so high up they don't see the car unless they look preperly, you can imagine it's easy to assume there's no car when the roads are quiet.
AND the driver is a VET so she's not stupid all you sexist pricks!
Abbey44ful 1 year ago
@Abbey44ful if you search the net for the follow up, the police reconstructed the accident and blamed the female driver for not checking properly when changing from lane one to two. Most accidents involving cars are the fault of cars hence why HGV insurance is relatively cheap for the amount of miles an average truck will do in a year and the cost of a HGV, £100,000+ (not including load). The HGV driver has had 3 driving tests and years of experience and reversed more miles than she’s driven!
pimpUK1 1 year ago 2
@Abbey44ful You have to realize that a truck driver go's threw exstensive training to drive that huge thing...most of the time it is the cars fault cause it takes the length of a football field to stop a 80,000 lb vehicle and cars thinks they can just cut n front expecting them to stop on a dime...its not gonna happen! They are trained professionals out there and more then likely its not drugs its stupid car drivers not realizing..

Surely the truck driver can feel at least SOME load on the engine and realise something is up. Pushing a car sideways at 60mph has got to be noticeable at least somewhat. (Equivalent to dragging a human along behind a car)
TimpBizkit 1 year ago
@TimpBizkit Guessing there is cruise control involved, all that would have happened is the hgv engine working a tiny bit harder, considering what they are able to pull (and push) without much effort. Now if it was a Bentley that lorry would've been gasping for a while and become noticable.
KawiKaRs 1 year ago
@KawiKaRs it would require an additional 500+ horsepower from the engine
TimpBizkit 1 year ago
@TimpBizkit exactly what do you base those numbers on? once the car is sliding it would take very little power to keep it sliding. also those trucks only have around 350 horsepower to begin with and they can pull tens of thousands of pounds so a 2000 pound clio would be like pushing nothing
nicoarsenault 1 year ago
@nicoarsenault Road speed = 60mph or about 25 m/s tyre friction, car weighing 1.25 tons (12,500 N) friction coefficient 0.8 (10,000 N force). Power = 250kw or 335 hp. Pushing/pulling a load on wheels involves very little friction and is totally different to dragging it sideways/with the brakes on. Of course, the lorry could just be heavy and be gradually slowing down.
TimpBizkit 1 year ago
@TimpBizkit suck my wanger you geek
andycone1985 1 year ago
@TimpBizkit although you are correct in theory you have not factored in many of the variables, for example the material use to pave the road, how much friction a car tire produces once it is already sliding, even if it was a sunny day (warm dry pavement), ect...

Theyre saying the woman tried to cut infront of the lorry and as she's come in too close the front of the lorrys clipped the back end of her car and she's ended up turning into the front. Which does make sense.

Verdict = STUPID WOMAN
millar5001 1 year ago
@millar5001 - "Car drivers in general ? " Don't you mean inexperienced car drivers ? For every car driver that drives like an idiot there is one truck driver that doesn't fully appreciate how much weight he is carrying. Thats why you see so many trucks overturned on roadsides due to a lack of anticipation. I drive around 50,000 miles a year, ok small change compared to many lorry drivers. The majority of lorry drivers are good just as the majority of business high mileage car drivers are good.
ALBIONTYKE 1 year ago
@ALBIONTYKE I actually meant all drivers with no experience of driving anything above 7.5 tonne. As for business drivers in my experience they seem to be the most throttle happy on the motorway in their underpowered rep cars and cause the most animosity amongst other drivers because they think they can get away with cutting you up and tailgating because they got an Audi badge. Obviously I don't mean all business drivers but a high percentage. I'm sure there are plenty of bad truckers as well.

KiwiKugai 1 year ago
@KiwiKugai If both vehicles were travelling at roughly the same speed the level of impact would of been minimal and could of easily of been dismissed as driving over a rough section of road. If you pause the video at 0:16 you can see that the Clio is below his line of site and the cab does not have the relevant exterior mirrors positioned above the windscreen showing the HGV driver what is immediately in front of his bumper. I don't think these mirrors are required by law but perhaps should be.
millar5001 1 year ago

And what is comendable about reversing?
brendangray 1 year ago
@brendangray So, you are saying because someone else's poor driving skills should cost a man's lively hood? Do you know all the facts? I don't but the matter was fully investigated after this turned up on Youtube, and a verdict has reached. accept it... and why the expetives??
astrecks 1 year ago
You are right : I don't know all the facts, and in my note I never said I did. After me and and a friend looked at the video, we both said: it would should be extremley unlikey that he should have not be punished for what he did, let alone comended. We gave more of an intuitive answer. As for the expletives, the question can easy be asked: why not the expletives. And I don't have to explain this anyway, esp. alone to someone I don't know.

@brendangray HE din't DO anything the other driver caused the accident, by not looking before moving right into the middle lane.
Also... it shows the lack of the intelligence of some posters in here who think is cool to use expletives
astrecks 1 year ago

brendangray 1 year ago
@brendangray LOL, it's a bad sign when you get down to arguing about spelling, hehe.. it means you ran out of steam You can't get over the fact that the car driver nearly caused a tragic accident, the car drive is still working, the lorry driver is too traumatised to work. 29 years driving experienced messed up because of someone else's mistake, and she got off without charge.
astrecks 1 year ago
all I know is that is seems extemely unlikely that he 'shouldn't' have seen the car from the clip I watched. 29 yrs experience can equally count against you when you get complacent in a job. I don't know the real detail, only the clip and the comments and verdict from court. Which I believe is enough to as least have an opinion about something. Again, what is he doing in the fast lane anyway? the highway code has a stricture on this. I think I am prob talking to another lorry driver:ad hominem.
brendangray 1 year ago
@brendangray You clearly know nothing. he wasn't in the fast lane he was in the middle lane, LOOK at the clip again please.

brendangray 1 year ago
Okay : middle lane (truck driver). Just beause I got that wrong though it doesn't entail the fact that I know nothing (go to school). I know that your P.G. begins at 9pm and you better hurry if your gonna make it.
brendangray 1 year ago
@brendangray You are wrong on every count, as clever as you are, you know nothing about this clip. You are happy to be an armchair barrister, judge and jury. Don't let me burst your little bubble. I just listen to the facts as they are reported.
astrecks 1 year ago
I am not sure that you could know all the facts unless you were in the court room which I doubt, so the evidence you are positing your conclusion on is also limited. I probably looked at the same news reports that you have had access to, and I think it is a crime in itself that he has gotten away being praised for his actions. The judge said: "As he could not see, hear , or smell the car this is why he will not be punished.". And this is not good enough, in my opinion and many others too
brendangray 1 year ago
@brendangray Again you know nothing, there was no court case, from the BBC news website "The lorry driver, from Lancashire, appeared before North West Traffic Commissioner Beverley Bell."
The police had confirmed that the driver could not see the car from his driving position, they took measurements. I think its a crime the the driver of the car was not charged for unsafe driving.

@MrNyalPurcell Have you ever driven a lorry of this size? A 750kg car has really no significance to a 40 tonne lorry. People who drive these vehicles will tell you they have large blind spot. It has just been confirmed on the local Northwest England news program the driver of the lorry was not to blame, and after a thorough investigation it was found there was no way he could have seen the car trapped at the front of his lorry.
