In 1885, Japs didn't want to be Asians. They said, "Abandon Asia, go for the west". We reckon they, japs, should leave Asia now if they feel ashamed of being Asians.
@LastCommodore The film attempts to justify Japan's invasion of Manchukuo, suggesting that Japan is developing the region. It is clearly propaganda and a demonstration of imperialism. Just as the Europeans claimed that they were developing (and not exploiting) colonies, Japan claimed that their aim was to further Chinese society. The reality was different. According to historians, more than 10 million Chinese were mobilized by the Kwangtung Army for slave work in Manchukuo under the Kōa-in.
@supplysargent Thanks for your reply, but Japanese justification is not what I got from this film at all. I have viewed it and listened to the narration more than once and stand by my earlier comment.
@LastCommodore Perhaps you do not understand the purpose of this film, as the Japanese saw it. Let me put it inhistoric context. Japan forcefully seized the territory that they called Manchukuo, enslaved the population, deprived them of basic human rights, and eventually committed numerous atrocities including enslavement, all the while telling the world that they were simply "developing" the territory. This "documentary" film is part of their propaganda effort in this regard.
You think newsreels and documentaries don't promote ideologies? "A barren and desolate land has been transformed into a great commercial center." There you go. That's the ideology that's being promoted: That Japan's involvement in Manchuria is not only beneficial, but designed to benefit the native population. In fact, the Japanese invaded Manchuria, seized by military force and used it primarily to stage their war machine for Japan's forthcoming invasion of china.
Manchuria's location and abundant natural resources made it the perfect base to invade china. The native population was virtually enslaved and "Manchukuo" became one of the world's most brutally run regions. Through terror, violence and intimidation the native population was cowed into submission: privately owned farms and businesses were seized and became state run. Due process was nonexistent. When the League of Nations condemned Japan's actions in Manchuria, Japan resigned it's membership.
There is no fact that Japan tried to invade China. The reason to which Japan participated in Manchuria was for coping with the threat of the Soviet Union and communism. Because Japan eliminated cruel military cliques or bandits and maintained the peace and order, the population of Manchuria increased and prospered very much.
That argument is as ludicrous as it is offensive. So a country that seizes and occupies a foreign country is only doing so as guardians and protectors of the native people? This dubious defense has been used by every imperialist government in history, and it's nothing but colonialist chauvinism. And what do you mean Japan didn't try to invade China? What about when Japan invaded and seized Manchuria in 1931? Or the full scale invasion that began in 1937? or The Rape of Nanking?
@AlaizterURMOM Did you know your mom dropped you on you head when you were born and gave you eternal brain damage, and because of that you eat crap as a hobby, just a fun fact! :)
@grendelsan There are also difference between how they treat colonies. In their early stages, namely Taiwan, they treat the locals pretty well. Then in Korea and Manchuria, things getting worse. Then when it comes to China it's totally a different story.
@chrysan6128 -unless you actually lived there at the time, your conclusion is a stretch, isn't it? Happiness of who? for the poor japanese farmers migrated there to start a new life- maybe. My grandma is an ethnic manchu living in Manchuria and she didn't find happiness under the japanese occupation, where a chinese will be executed for eating rice. (they still did, but had to be ultra careful). I agree that they did developed the area. But happiness is an entire different issue.
@chrysan6128 That's true. My point is, Japanese imperialism was intended for the direct benefit of the Japanese homeland. By strengthening infrastructure in its colonies, Japan could create a stronger territory which it could exploit. Yes, Japan's colonial possessions benefited from this, but that's not because Japan was benevolently advancing the colonies for the fun of it. Japan was doing it for Japan.

How is this propaganda? The film does not promote any ideology. It is basically a newsreel or documentary about Manchuria's economy.

Indeed Japan was bringing modernity to many of its colonial possessions, but it was not for the benefit of the colonies. All was to help Japan.
