  • Chrome is my favorite colour - Lisa Kelly (USA)

  • I'm using a web browser named after this :P

  • @filippo333 Google Chromium. WOO!

  • "Absorbed"? If it's just a bumpy surface version wouldn't that be "scattered"?

  • is chromium poisonous?

  • @pyrioni Some Cr compounds are, some aren't. So called "hexavalent chromium" or Cr(+6) compounds are toxic and carcinogenic. They're a common form of industrial pollution since all of the methods used to refine chromium create Cr(+6) as an intermediate product before finally converting it into metallic chrome. Cr(+6) was used for chrome plating in the past, and still is today. But it's being replaced by "trivalent chrome plating" which is more efficient, less dangerous, and far less polluting.

  • @TSorovanMHael I see, thank you for your detailed explanation, so stainless steel has minor poison in it. ;)

  • @pyrioni Not really, Cr isn't toxic in it's metallic form because it's impossible for it dissolve in the bloodstream in that state. (Unlike ionized Cr+6 compounds which are often very water soluble) For this reason certain grades of stainless steel are used for medical implants like bone screws and joint replacements. I should explain that Cr+6 has lost six electrons so it becomes an ion with a charge of +6. Metallic chromium hasn't lost any electrons so it has a neutral charge.

  • @TSorovanMHael Oh I see what you mean now, wow, thank you!!

  • CHROMIUM IS A METAL BAND FROM SOUTH AFRICA, NOT AN ELEMENT lol

  • I thought that stainless steel was made with chromium.

  • @Ashanmaril It IS. Stainless can have anywhere from 11% to 35% Cr.

  • i GOOGLE-d it

  • So is the chrome on my bumper toxic if its a 2000 model???

  • @alexstraz

    Yes, please touch it (often)...

  • Thumbs up if you're appropriately watching this in google chrome.

  • really beautiful sample , nice sample , great sample , reaaally shiny sample , really nice sample , really fine sample of .... OMFG !!!

  • It's popular on motorcycles too.

  • I wonder how many of the compounds Professor Poliakoff has worked on that WEREN'T toxic and/or carcinogenic. Storing chromate salts above one's bed can only cause one to wonder, since chromates are hexavalent chromium compounds which are very toxic and easily absorbed through the skin. They probably didn't know about that back then, though.

  • Chromium is found in stainless steel

  • What surprised me about chromium is how easy it was to destrot the metal with acid. The salts that process makes are gorgeous greens and purples.

  • hah that guy calls every element beautiful

  • Your contribution to the condition of man is well appreciated. Now get a hair cut.

  • The hexavalent form is extremely toxic.

  • yeh erin brokovich

  • You can find Chromium in ruby's. The chemical compounds is; Al2O3:Cr

  • That's where ruby lasers get their characteristic beam color- because of chromium in the ruby.

  • nice fro man. don't usually see grey ones though.

  • Yeah, it looks so cool!

  • @CHIEFWILLIAM17 Lol wonder if he pics his hair

  • very nice video!!!

  • A very nicely presented video.

  • so who are the guys that think up "Uses" for these new "doctoral thesis" chem compounds?

    i like uses... (:

  • Often, if there is an obvious use, the person who came up with the compound will come out with a start-up company making the material (who better?)

If there are not immediate, obvious uses, then it is up to the chemical engineers to come up with one.

  • I love the fact that Prof P gets warm feelings about the elements.

  • There is one video where he praises not just a sample, but the paper wrapping around it for being lovely :) Very passionate about his work.

  • I think that's not Prof P, I reckon it's the guy who's running this project, though it's just a guess. But yeh, passionate... innit ;)

  • imagine if he worked at a jewelry shop.

  • @reinux or a barber shop.

  • Chromium's chemistry is great to research.
