First of all thanks for posting the video! You're my hero now! Second of all I looooove La Norman hair on this clip! She looks great!!! And I want to say that if one day I have a daughter, I ll make her listen, watch, learn about Miss Norman work, and I'll pray that maybe one day, she too will sing, and be such a smart and elegant lady...
One last thing, does anyone know where to send her letters? I want to tell her that she does have a fan here in Africa.
(...)Since I know how much work I have to put into doing this job it is not really very sensible to be arrogant about it (...) Amazing lady. Great Jessye...
Wonderful interview! It's fine to enjoy other genres of music, but Jessye must not forget that it was through classical music that she rose to success in her career. She ought to thank Schubert, Strauss, Wagner and all the other classical composers and the public for allowing her those "opportunities."
@wTrevorh Their dead spirits ought to thank HER for bringing such music to life dozens-hundreds of years later, all throughout HER career. Get over yourself and your narrow-mindedness. I highly doubt Ms. Jessye has forgotten!
@bcom11, I love Jessye; she remains one of my favorites. However, a little more humility and gratefulness would have serve her better in this interview--especially in her comment about not being "born German,...Austrian, my roots are from Africa? What does that have to do with being grateful? She solidified a successful career singing the music of the first and second viennese schools. She should show more humility period!
@wTrevorh She does not "forget." She gives honor where it is due, in reference to Wagner, Strauss, etc. She is also one who finds it necessary, and rightfully so, to give honor to her own heritage, her inspiration to begin singing in the first place. I commend you Ms. Norman because it's the continual remembrance of one's roots/beginnings that helps to keep one humble even in the face of such great success!
@LadyValentine930, I never mentioned ANYTHING about her not paying respect to her roots. I still love Jessye; she's one of my favorite voices. I was referring to her comment regarding not being "born German,...Austrian, my roots are from Africa." What does that have to do wth gratefulness? I believe her answer to Tavis' question showed very little humility and gratefulness to the works that actually made her a success. It's fine to pay respect to one's roots, but there's a proper way to do it.
Anderson went England and met Queen Victoria ( Who died in 1901 ) ????

That crossed my mind, too. But we'll give her a little (artistic) license. :-D

Thank You for posting this.
It is very difficult(especially here in the UK) to see any interviews with Jessye.
She always comes over as a warm, friendly and intelligent person.
