Alright mate, Just wondering about the Birch tree in the video. I thought Birch had a pale coloured bark and can be identified with the bark peeling quite often but on the video the bark looks totally different to what i would associate with Birch, can you help please, thanks.
@fleckyRFC its an older tree, thats grows in a very dark beech/pine woods..it is a birch tree.not all our birch trees in the uk have the perfect bark that can be peeled off to use for boxes etc, this tree is very aged..
Great video! thnkx 4 posting! This is my first year tapping birch trees & i was wondering why some sap is a golden color like apple juice ? is it still drinkable?
@wolfbushcraft Yes, its from the same type of birch tree, but i decided to discard that golden colored sap , But i must say that what sap i did boil down was very tasty! I use it on ice cream,cooking,etc...also it tastes great as a substitute for sugar in my tea, Cant wait for the next tapping season here in Newfoundland,Canada.... cheers!
Lithuanians usually take a wooden barrel better from oak full of birch sap then put in a dried piece of a rye bread and on the surface they puor a 5 cm layer of oats and cover it with a shroud.Once the oats germinate they form a natural protective layer and after some time this sap becomes ready to drink.Keep it in a cool dark cellar.
Those juice are very useful for our bodies as it is extremely rich in all kind of vitamins and minerals. When it's drunk in large amounts it cleanses the body from various toxins.Thank you mate for this upload!
In Lithuania we drill the hole on the northern side of the birch tree about 5 cm long then put in a wooden tube to gather the sap better in a glass jar as it helps to maintain the natural taste of the birch sap. After tapping always sealing the hole.
If a tree becomes infected by a small hole such as that it was an unhealthy tree already. I've tapped trees for over 30 years now and have never had a tree die from the tap. I've never met a producer that does cover the tap hole. If another tree falls over and gouges out a hole in the bark of it's neighbor tree the injured tree just heals up. So as long as you're tapping a healthy tree you don't need to worry about sealing the tap hole. The tree will heal itself better than we could.
i live in Anchorage, Alaska and we have birch trees all over the place. Can you do this with any birch trees or only certain types of trees? I have white, paper, silver (I think they are all the same but just with different names) birch trees. Also, these are all in the city...does that matter or is it be safer or better to go into the woods and get this sap? Thanks and great job.
This video gives me spring fever! It will be another month and a half before we can tap our birch trees here. Maple season will be here in another couple, maybe three, weeks, but birch tapping has to wait until spring is almost here. I'm starting to look forward to syrup, sugar, and sap tea. Once the tapping starts I don't leave the woods until the boiling is done. One of my favorite times of the year. Thanks for sharing.
been waiting all this while... and now it's almost tree tapping time again...
excitement is building

Im sorry i thought he drilled far into tree.

did you make a stopper for the hole? otherwise the tree could become infected.
