I'm just now watching this after owning the CD since, well forever. His voice was failing and this may have been his final performance. Thankfully, it was one of his best (you can see the struggle) and there have been many more. This goes in the time capsle. If anyone 100 or 200 years from now want to know what we considered the best, here you are.
His voice is really on the way out here. It's really gravelly... don't do coke, alcohol and songs which are to far out your vocal range or thats what happens.
@quizpubbob Vocal range wasn't the determining factor here. True his voice did gradually get deeper over the years but he was still able to sing all of the old songs. The drugs, booze, and constant singing were the reason.
This intro with the harp is amazing...a very moving piece. Trying to translate it onto a guitar but not having much luck (not even sure if it's really possible!!)
I think this is the best concerts ever given for Sir John. I love his lyrics and musicalization. Even though he does not have the best voice, he is an extraordinary song writer. Love you Elthon
Elton John is one of those performers who can have a not that great voice but still sound good - the fact that he doesn't have a perfect voice is partly what makes these kinds of songs sound really good especially with an orchestra behind.
"No true understanding of vocal performance" What the? Ask any highly qualified vocal coach and they will tell you exactly the same thing.
It was not a criticism of him. But even if it was - what a sad life you lead if it irks you so greatly that you feel a need to tell someone what a "sad little monkey" they are, particularly when you have no idea who the person if who wrote the comment let alone their qualifications/experience that is the basis for their comment.
@weewilly49 ...and continuing on LaraMB1986's comment, I am sure this is why is a world legend, because he is not good at what he does, i'm sure. You got your cards reversed man, he is on the screen, where and who are you? When you have made your own success and can proudly count millions of fans, let me know. Remember: "Those who can't do, teach..." If you understand so much we don't, enlight us, in the meantime I'll keep listening to Elton John.
Even with the gravelly vocals to make up for not being able to hit the right highs, this still gets the somber mood across if you listen. I highly recommend listening to the 1970 track. If I haven't heard it in a while, when the harp starts, I start leaking.
The most shocking version I've ever heard. His voice seems to be about to break, but at the same time he sings stronger than never... and this backing flute in the end, Sublime!!
I totally agree. I taped this concert on a videotape when I was 16 and watched it and cried over it until it warped with use! Beautiful, it still makes me cry now
I was living in Brisbane at the time and would have only been just an early teen. My mum was a big fan of Elton but I never heard her mention this concert. I really have just found it on VHS resently but what you see is just half the show. I don't have the other half unfortunately. It's an extrodinary performance and the orchestra really adds depth.
This is one of the most beautiful concerts, I wish I could have been there to participate in the audience!!!!I agree with your Mom, Elton and Bernie and Paul Buckmaster have developed into an awesome team! I saw one of the crew from one of his concerts in my home city 30 years ago and he laughed when I said do you see Elton at all....His reply was everyday!!!

@weirdguy75 He was doing a lot of coke during this period and through the concert. The papers reported that he had caught a "flu"...great artist <3

The brief opening sounds like swarming honeybees. Then, the harp. Ah! Overall fabulous performance.

What a sad little monkey with no true understanding of vocal performance. It's doubtful you'll ever 'Get It'.

Do you notice, as I just have, that he dosen't touch the piano once. I missed that in the review. It's purely his voice and the orchestra.
Shaun17170 2 years ago 8
It's his voice on the 1970 album, as well. People think he's surgically attached to his piano.
