its not completely silent in the cockpit, yeah hes going faster than sound.. but so is the plane. and hes only about ~30ft. from the engine itself and sound travels at 330meters per second.. so unless hes able to go 330meters in the time it takes for sound to reach the cockpit from 30ft away... he'd be able to hear something.

u may b right, i have heard tht it was arnd 680 mph, but this air show was right over the water at atlantic city. so mayb the conditions did affect it. i do know an f-18 super hornet did a high speed pass at 650-700 mph. so i guess it does varies... who knows

the sound barrier depends on how high you are above sea level. For example, at sea level is 761 miles per hour. Not sure what that is in knots. But at 100,000 feet, the sound barrier is much much lower, around 400 miles per hour.

The f/a 18 and all other planes give you a mach counter. This tells you how fast you are going in mach. mach 1 is the sound barrier. Planes at airshows usually get up to .95 mach, so they dont break the sound barrier, but the vapor cone forms around the plane.

just so you guys know, at most airshows jets are not allowed to break the sound barrier, the sonic boom will cause all glass and fragile objects to shatter. I was just at the atlantic city air show and the top speed throughout the whole show was 650-700 mph, sound barrier is arnd 800. it was stil fucken nuts tho haha

They do it out at sea and next to the carrier at low altitude... They also do it on what is called "dependant trips" for family members of carrier personnel....Lifetime experience.
