  • Do r-type delta

  • this game rocks and so it does the master system!

  • Wasn't there a cheat for extra continues on this version? On the continue screen countdown, Keep rotating Rotate the D-pad clockwise (or it might be anti-clockwise).

The sound of the ship crashing will forever haunt me :)

  • I could never beat this game and told my friend around a decade years back that it was the hardest game i'd played. took it to his house and completed it without dying once in front of him. It was abit bizzare. I've got the old SMS out again and am stuck on the third level. I have no idea how i walsed through it so easily when my mate was watching.

  • why play the shitty version? play the Turbo Grafx-16 version

  • @TreyTable R-type is fun no matter what.

  • The R-Type series. My favorite space shooter series. No matter the system, once you play one of these babies you know you're getting an amazing game... well at least most of the time.

  • what in vats? Brains? Sorry I didn't catch it lol

  • @whoever is playing this - I was in AGONY watching you miss collecting TWO red-laser pods.

  • "instead of chandilliers hanging from the ceiling they would have giant glass jars filled with brains"

I see a little DIY home improvement project coming on....

  • Yes indeed the Turbografx version has better graphics, but this one still more famous. good childhood memories!

  • Just hop into my DeLorean Marty! And when this baby hits 88 miles per hour your going to see some serious shit! Then we can play R-TYPE!

  • The Turbografx version had better graphics and sound, but as much flicker as was in the Master System version, I still think it was less than what was in the tg16 version.

Oh how careless of me. I almost forgot. BRAINS IN VATS RULE!!

  • ACtually, there were continue points....except for level 3 (and the extra "Super Stage") But you were still depowered if you lost a life, and in later levels, you were good as screwed. A version of it WAS made for the Gameboy, but it was missing two stages, most of the music (only had the first two level themes and the boss music), the missiles, and the names of the enemies given in the instructions were just all wrong (sorry, I fight the KRELL, not the GLADIATOR!)

  • oh how i miss the 80s

  • I love this game to death. I used to play it at my neighbor's house when I was a kid. Love it to death.

  • IF they dont have brains in vats...They SUCK.

  • you forgot to mentinon r-type on gameboy colour

  • Good, detailed review. You've covered it well, in an entertaining manner!

Note that Gradius had "options" in an earlier? game,

and there were "Funnels" in Gundam anime, don't remember when

(See my review of the new emulated R-Type on iOS!)

Re: Brains - See Metroid, then Lupin III Secret of Mamo

  • brains in vats? no wonder mark likes shinobi 3.

  • BRAINS IN VATS

  • Why didn't R-Type come out on the NES?

  • I have to say R-Type is the first video game to produce the charging weapon.

  • Despite the hardware limitations, Compile did an awesome job porting this classic Irem game to SMS. Yes the very same Compile who made MUSHA.

  • If you're a Master System fan who's into importing, get the Japanese Master System and the Japanese version of this, if you can. It's got much better music because the Japanese machine has an extra sound chip that was removed from the Western models.

  • @JayArgonaut

You actually don't need the Japanese cart to hear the FM sound. You can play the NA and PAL games on a Japanese SMS with a SMS to Mark III converter. Tototek.com has them.

  • @Soukyugurentai Cool! Thanks for letting me know. I was under the impression that only the Japanese carts contained the FM code. :)

  • @fredmooretwo :) Fellow Amiga and Factor 5 fan here. I used to play the Amiga version of R-Type religiously (and still have it here somewhere). You're right about Chris' music, very talented guy - along with the other Factor 5 members. Amiga R-Type has some corners cut though compared to the arcade version. On Level 3 the battleship hull doesn't fall away and there's a few other omissions too. The X68000 conversion is apparently a flawless home computer conversion, from what I've heard.

  • One the best game of Master System.

  • 4:00 THATS got to be the most infected vagina I ve ever

  • I prefer R-types on ps1 over the rest of the series. It's arcade perfect ports of 1 and 2.

  • restarting the level is harcore XD love R tpype Expesaly Leo

  • There was a checkpoint in mid stage which is where you end up if you die. There aren't any stipulations except you need to pass that point.

  • Sega Genesis Power Base converter generates twice the flickering than a real Sega Master System console! - I had both back in the day.

  • @grinrause

That higly possible, as my MasterSystem Rtype doesn't flicker as the one in this review.

  • the master system is great i never had one growing up but i got one recently and i love it

  • i can't feel any nostalgic in that stuff except for epic music

  • Not your best review... 1. When you die in a boss fight, then you will restart in the middle of the level. (exception is level 3) 2. You missed to review the exclusive(!) sega master system only(!) hidden stage !!! Not a single word about it. Why ??? 3. Was your brain in that vat !? =)

  • @Turrican0815 hardcore! fuck yeah hidden stage was stage4 or 3 at the top of the screen

  • Please do R-Type 3 next. The music was awesome.

  • I read in a review for Last Resort (Game Fan... remember them?) that some of the R-Type developers worked on Last Resort. Pardon the poor sentence.

  • Just the fact that SEGA MASTER could handle such a game (barely) shows that Sega was on top technologically right from the get-go!

  • Do you plan on getting a copy of R-Type Final for PS2? I'd really love to see what you have to say on that. I really like it, but I'm always curious what other reviewers have to say.

  • brains in what? vets? vats?

  • I remember my Grandpa and Dad playing this game constantly when I was a child, my Grandpa still has his sega master system and this game...I should go borrow it.

  • You should review Gunstar Heroes for the genesis

  • My first game system......ah yes got it when i was four in 1987. Astro Warrior ruled

  • Has anybody here ever heard the FM version of the music of this game? It's SO COOL!

  • you have too many awesome videos! its gonna take forever to watch them all!

  • It's really wierd, the Game Boy Version had less Flicker!!

  • This looks like such a good port! Quite surprised.

  • The Master System really had some awesome visuals for an 8-bit console. It was definitely the more powerful of the competing 8-bit consoles, and I think its game library overall was better and of greater quality than NES games. The biggest difference in the end was the fact that Nintendo was being run by people that actually knew how to run a successful business. They tied up most the 3rd party developers to exclusive licenses, thus leaving Sega with little 3rd party support.

  • @Forzaabruzzo

Its too bad that the pc-engine bested both the NES and the Master System on every level though. Truly the pc-engine under NEC's endless stupidity was its only weakness, as it was still king of the new fangled cd format and 8 bit superiority in general. In fact check out R-type for the pc engine- Shit is arcade perfect conversion.

  • I don't have brains in jars hanging from my ceiling, but I do have aborted fetuses in jars hanging from my ceiling.

  • Mark, if you want a 2D horizontal shooter like R-Type for the Genesis, Hellfire is a title you might want to check. I'm just not sure if it game out in the US.

  • This game rulezz! Brains in vats are pure rock'n'roll \,,/

  • ur good in classic game man

  • this game is like Gaiares, you die and start all over at the start of the level

  • Actually, to access the 'super stage', look at 6.16 of this review and check the top of the screen...you'll see 2 green pillar like objects

...I can't remember which one it is, but if you can manover your ship to them AND reverse into it, the screen will flash and you're in the super stage!!

*You can only enter the super stage ONCE per game.

Let me know how you got on!

  • Bet you didn't know there's an EXTRA stage in this game ?? (only available on the Master System version)

Its called the Super Stage and it accessed on the 'caterpillar stage'. Too long to explain to do it, you'll have to google it.

    Happy researching...

  • never was a big fan for some reason, i always prefered astro warrior and fantasy zone 2

  • You should play in Japanese Master System

  • I like the TurboGrafix 16 version of R-Type much better. It has no flicker issues.

  • And it's a more accurate port of the arcade version, which is good.

  • Such a great game :)

For me R-Type and Gradius are the kings of shmups !!!!

  • why are you not picking any bits up?! WHY!!!

  • KAZAMACHAMPION. DONT FORGET BAYOU BILLY! Mark will you review Bayou Billy for NES if I mail it to you. SEGA master system sounded hardcore but it looked like an atari. NES looked like a VCR and the name sounded fun and fancy free. being ignorant. we got an NES

  • Bayou Billy wasn't so popular because it's insane difficulty angered many many gamers and reviewer.

  • @Kazamachampion I beat it. wish I recorded it! It's heat pounding fun. it has one of the best end scenes For NES

  • Sure the TB-16 is more arcade like or closer to the arcade, but in every case the arcade variant of a game isn't always necessarily the best.

  • this ones easier anyway

  • wait I did beat this one!!

  • i think I had this for my GB!!!! its a good one I got to the last lvl and died at the boss.... idr if there was save id think so but it was an amazing game.

  • very nice on sms but i like the c64 version better

  • R-Type is on the wii virtual console now :)

  • twice

  • reply to 'loco0351'. The SMS did NOT come out before the NES.

  • Yeah, it does continue on today; as a turn based strategy game on the PSP!!

I just got it last night.

  • I fav r-type is R-type III third lightning

  • This is my FAVORITE version of R-Type.

The Turbo Grafx 16 version falls only shortly behind it; that version awesome too.

  • the tg-16 version was almost an arcade-perfect replica... way better than the sms... but this sms version was amazing for the system.

  • 海外版MasterSystemは、FM音源が無いから寂しいねぇぇR-TYPE は日本のMasterSystemでPlayする事を、お薦めします。

  • I agree.

  • The old games are the Best ! Here is a little bit of info on the SMS. It came out a little bit earlier than the NES almost the same time. It was much better than the NES i used too love the SMS duck hunt version. But what did the SMS system in was the fact that they didn't advertice as much as NES and didnt put games out as fast !

  • Here is little bit of info for you loco0351. NES dominated gamemarkets very easily and it was the most popular game console in 80's. It sold over 60 million and Master System sold only 13 million copies and NES's dominating percent was 90% SMS bit the dust, because it's game library was too small compared to the NES. Only over 300 games and NES had over 800 games.

  • And SMS had so many obscured games. Only very well known game series were Alex Kidd, After Burner, R-Type, Shinobi

  • the wonderboy series especially dragons lair are the best games for the sms imo

  • Dragon's Lair is also available on NES,

  • yea many wonderboy games got ported to non sega consoles but due to sega having the rights to the character, they had to change the main charcter to something other then wonderboy. Thats why i prefer the sega originals

  • NES had so much well known and popular game series such like: Super Mario, Zelda, Kid Icarus, Metroid, Ninja Gaiden, Bionic Commando, Mega Man, Rad Racer, Castlevania, Gradius, Blades of Steel, Punch-Out!, Contra, TMNT, Xevious, Double Dragon and the list goes on and on...

  • As you say brother those old 2d's have a feeling that none of those new 3d future games will never surpass.

  • Can someone tell me how the 8bit master system can make good transfers like that, and genesis 16bit dont?.If you wach some of the arcade transfers on genesis you will see that are not so good like this one.Aplause for master system!

  • brains might also tell your jeffrey dahmer

  • Rock! I still have my Sega Master System! :) Sitting on my Dell right in front of me. I also still have M.U.S.H.A. for my Sega Genesis in my closet :)

  • 360 version is the best. Master System version was excellent.

    Classic game.

  • how can you compare a 360 version of r-type with an 80s console?

  • It's R-Type and R-Type. How are those incomparable?

  • Actually that does kinda make sence.

Sure maybe there's greater quality, I don't know, but 80's electronics are 80's electronics, its undoubtedly awesome if for no other reason than its being played on an 80's console.

  • the turbo grafx version is better

  • and the ps1 version is the best :)

  • How dare you utter those words! how dare you....you savage beast!

  • ps1 version is basically an arcade perfect port

  • Relax, it was a joke.

  • R-Type have really good music. Anyone think the same? Is very nostalgic hearing it.

  • Yeah I love it! I still think the arcade version kills this version in every respect though, particularly the music.

  • @BlackArtsShinji oh yea. best shump music

  • @BlackArtsShinji

Yes the R-type series had nice music, just not this one :)

  • @BlackArtsShinji In my opinion, this game has the best songs ever considering it was 1987.

  • This was the first game I ever got for my Sega Master System back when it first came out, and to this day remains one of my favourites.

  • that first boss looks like it came off metroid, but i know it didnt.

  • There was another R-Type imitation that this time it was only released for the Arcades in 1992, and that game was Rezon. It was developed by a very small company called Allumer Ltd, and was distributed by Taito.

  • Sega master system had some of the games and this was one of them so why people still shitting on it for and only show Nintendo love but not Sega.

  • hahahahaha r type is as cool as driving type r ;D btw i ownes this games at mastersystem only got into 7th level =,(

  • that not true you don't start at the beinning of the stage there are checkpoints but i guess cause its in sega master but eh nothings better then a challange

and remeber this to its arcarde game it suppose to eat you'r coins....

    Brains in vats LOL xD

review R-type Delta theres a stage when the brains in vats going at you :3

  • lol you need to play fallout 3. they have robots with brains in glasses xD

  • am looking for a similar game like this bu i can't remeber the name....

you can take some enemys and capture them and use their weapons or you can turn them in to an small power and realese it in a blast

    any one know the game?

  • It's a pretty well known fact (among game collectors) that the best-selling console is NOT the most-powerful console:

ATARI - not as good as intellivision

NES - not as powerful as SMS or Atari7800

SNES - well, there's always an exception to every rule ;-)

PS1 - not as powerful or "clean" as N64 graphics

PS2 - not as powerful as the Xbox or Cube

Wii - not as powerful as X360 or PS3

  • this is an excellent example of how in some ways master system had some pretty graphics when compared to the NES. not to say one is better than the other.

  • After seeing this, I'd have to say the best 1980s version is the Commodore Amiga - near-arcade perfect.

    Second best is Commodore 64.

This SMS version leaves a lot to be desired.

  • Brains in vats!!! R-type rocks!

  • I still play this game in a emulator (a very rare one: Past-O-Rama) in my P4 and a wireless paddle. :)

  • Irritation an frustration is the key word here.

Altough i spent nearly half of my childhood trying, I never manage to make it past the 7:th grad or so.

    Anyone with a similair experience?

    Fuck Sega :)

  • the review is wrong, there is a checkpoint in the middle of each stage.

this game is wonderful, i was addicted to it when it came and i still play it sometimes. music is great. gameplay is awesome. and the 7th stage is just one of the most challenging stages of all the videogame history. best 8-bit game ever.

  • They put out a gameboy version of this that is very similar. I had it for years before I beat it. Even on the gameboy screen, the art made an impression on me. The same developers made a wicked platformer on the NES called Metalstorm which has the same art style and insane difficulty/.

  • R-type is very difficult game. but i appreciate for all that it is. i still love the game to this day for its difficulty and detailed animations

  • no doubt man, beautiful but tough to beat

  • Psychonauts had brains in vats. That's why Psychonauts is an awesome game.

  • the music is awesome

  • LMAO at WyreWizard - I first played this on the Commodore 64 so to my eyes this is a masterpiece.

  • wow one of my favorite games as a kid

  • Well gee genius off course it is, it's not that hard to make a perfect port of a arcade game on a system that comes out oh some 10 or so years after the orginal arcade game first came out.

  • Heh, genius?.....hardly

  • this game is pretty sweet. first sms game i played and it might be my favorite master system game of all time. and it shows all u hard core nintendo fans that sega can make some damn great games

  • At first, when I herd about the game R-type, and all of its sequels and prequels, I thought it was a rip off of Gradius, but after about a year of R-typing, I realized R-type really did set the standard for SHMUPs of today, and yesterday.

  • The Bydo is actually a weapon created by mankind in the 26th century, and abandoned in space. It's like a bio-mechanical hivemind, it creates its own army and weapons, and you're a spaceship sent in to destroy the core of it all. The enviroments really give you an idea of how The Bydo works, you go through factories manufacturing ships and units, and destroy Bydo Warships. All of the enemies in the game are part organic, and part mechanical. At the end I think you destroy one of The Bydo cores..

  • The R-Type theme tune sends

    shivers down my spine.

  • Pefection isn't fun. It's challenging but it isn't fun. Games are supposed to be both challenging AND fun, so perfection just doesn't fly.

  • Very cool. I played Super R-Type, but I was always wondering where the original fit in since R-type wasn't on the NES.

    haha Halo 37 :P

  • no i was emulating the master system version

  • An absolute favorite of mines, thanx for reviewing ^^

  • Brains with spikes growing out of them too, can't forget those.

  • I know some people may hate me for saying this, but R-Type is my personal favourite game of all time. This was the game that made gaming for me a personal hobby. I have been striking against the Bydo empire since I was 6. I will never forget the first time I played it.

  • To be point-blank honest with you, InecomCompany, I TRULY enjoyed your review of R-Type on the Sega Master System, and I played the original arcade version of this quite a bit back in the day and fell deeply in love with it ever since!!! (^-^)v !!

And since R-Type Dimensions is currently available on XBox 360 Live Arcade right now, could you please have a separate review of it ready for us when you get a chance? Thank you so much, and I will be looking forward to it when it comes!!! ^_~

  • I have an R-Type game for my original game boy. It holds a special place in my heart because it was the first SHUMP I have ever played and the first SHUMP I ever owned.

  • Rtype was also the first shmup i owned.

  • I wan to get the one on Xbox live next month.

  • could you review ninja gaiden for the SMS

  • Looking forward to your review of Last Resort, that's one of hell of a tough game!

  • when i first looked at the titled i thought this was gona be for the oddsy2 i mean R-TYPE that spells oddsy right there lol

  • Brains in vats! hey what happened to your co-host?

  • I had R-type for the Game Boy :P

  • Great review! BTW, if one could revise the hardware on the SMS, would having an increased number of hardware sprites handled on screen reduce or eliminate the flicker?

  • brains in vats lol

  • Bitchassed Bydo xD

  • Fun game. I do recall. The SMS music/sound sucked, but the graphics were pretty good for the time.

  • R type DX is an excellent port for the GBC for R type 1 and 2, and I completed it!

  • Some versions of the japanese SMS had an FM sound chip in addition to the PSG. R-Type is one of the games that supported the FM chip. The US version of R-Type still has support for FM music despite there not being a version of the SMS with an FM chip in the US.

  • hey lego indiana jones had brains and lego star wars had bats!

  • Brain in bats!

  • I used to play this on my Game Gear with the Master System Converter

  • The SMS version was developed by Compile and has a secret level not in any other version.

  • I think a new R-Type just came out on XBLA, are you gonna get that one?

  • COOL

  • Where's the GRID review you promised?!

  • he already reviewed it

  • R-Type is still going strong today, with a brand new WiiWare release that just came out!

  • There's also a R-Type game for the PSP published by Atlus. Will you be able to look at PSP and DS games as well?

  • There was also version on the Turbografx 16.

  • all right lets do this

  • brains in vats

    brilliant

  • I only played one or two R-Type games on the gameboy and that was when I was still in elementary school. Second or third grade. But I loved 'em. My only problem was the difficulty back in the day.

I liked challenges. But I preffered games that were too easy over the games that were too hard.

Things have changed quite a bit today so I think I'll have to hunt one of these games down and try to finally beat this old nemesis of mine.

I'm coming to get you, R-Type! Just you wait!

  • Ive played this though i didnt like it that much good games are like shinobi 3 etc

  • why do they call it the master system? Was it masterful...

  • it was quite masterful :P

  • Yes it was.... yes it was.

  • Yeah R-Type Now That's A Awsome Game!
