  • keep it another 50 yrs nd sell it for $100,000

  • The only source of portable music players that surpasses both an iPod and walkman will always be a discman/CD player. However, a walkman definitely has alittle better advantage as you can play both the radio and your own music i.e. cassettes, but the only major problem is once the cassettes are played too much the tape breaks. iPod's only best advantage is it fits better in your pocket. Either way I went from walkmans throughout the 90s to discman from 98-06 to iPods 07-current.

  • Awesome piece of equipment... complete waste of 2:30 minutes of my bandwidth to show it off.

  • i got on e at a garage sale today heheha

  • much cooler indeed!!

  • micheal jackson :)

  • These were cool back then. Currently the avarage mp3 player has the size of this wireless receiver :P

  • Ever heard of Bluetooth?

  • That blew...

  • Hi, I'm a Walkman...

    ...and I'm an iPod.

    iPod: Say, Grandpa Walkie...

    Walkman: It's walkman, you kid.

iPod: Yeah yeah whatever... Look at this, I have a touchscreen.

Walkman: So? I have wireless playback.

iPod: Yeah me too, look at my speakers!

Walkman: No no, I mean wireless headphones.

    iPod: ...Fuck.

  • @MrSambaboy But I have bluetooth wireless headphone for my ipod touch....

  • @Negativerything Those are third-party products. If they want, they can even make MP3-expansion for Walkmans too, but it won't be Sony who's making it. ;-)

  • i have an mp3 player called a backpack filled with cds and tapes

  • geezus why didnt i think of this before? ill throw out my 300 dollar ipod and get a FREAKING TAPE PLAYER....well thats a no no...

  • What if there are two of them around ?

  • dont they still make them?

  • he he cassette isnt dead. Analogue is cool!

  • i saw what kind of videos you had i i would say you really like SONY

  • why its better? #1 its old #2 old means its vintage, #3 It's got a history #4 Its history is quite great because its by sony #5 Since its from sony we all believe in it, #6 it only needs one double A Battery at a time #7 Its less consuming than the ipod #7 its just great #8 It's wireless and already a vintage XD! Can't get any better than that #9 It's a walkman, the days before they switched to cd players(walkman) and #10, because we all know sony and the old stuff from sony is always just great

  • I have a 5th generation iPod Nano, but I want the Sony Walkman WM-10 from the early 80s, you know, the Super Walkman. But those are so hard to find, though.

  • To bad Sony has turned to shit lately. Piss poor tv's and they went from first to last in the console race. Oncevgreat now fumbling along losing money left and right.

  • sony rule

  • waterproof! SH*T SON, im gonna listen to that sh*t underwater!

  • What the fuck!? They don't even have wireless headphones *That I know of* now!?

  • @theif519 thats cause your stupid...

  • Awesome!!!

  • Nice walkman. I agree with you that the older ways of listening to music on the go is far far better. I have 2 tape walkmans, one Sony and one Aiwa. Ok so you can't listen to a million songs all at once like you can on an ipod or mp3 player but mp3's are way overated. They're compressed data and therefore you lose a hell of a lot of clarity and sound, I would much rather take my Discman on the train - I don't even OWN an ipod and would never buy one. Long live the walkmans!

  • Great video - walkmans rule!

  • Today's tech lacks soul and is overcommercialized to the point where I don't think it's cool anymore. RETRO is better! On VH1 classic, a reminder to "text for i-whatever" every two minutes! It takes the 80s out of the 80s! "Download an Intellivision app for free!" Sorry, not the same as on a big screen. I feel like today's tech becomes outdated too quickly to the point where I enjoy "oldies" that have proven the test of time.

  • You should plug the audio into the computer for this video; these days people tend to think of cassette tapes as having inferior sound quality. If you're not going to show how great these stone-aged walkmans sounded, there isn't really much point in making a video of it is there? :)

  • I still use cassettes with dolby B

. if recorded on _decent_ equipment it sounds good.

    good luck keeping it running

  • @phoxetis try Dolby "S"

  • @TVperson1 I don't have equipment to record or play dolby S.

  • MICHAEL JACKSON

  • Agreed. Sony walkman's are te proper way to listen to music weather they are vintage or modern like my X series. Nice upload mate.

  • That's pretty cool! That's gotta sound pretty good, too. The cassette part looks to be made before everything went to cheap plastic - plus since the cassette part is separate, you can minimize flutter by not having it attached to your pants pocket while you're walking.

  • IPOD pfffff!!!!! put all this crappy on trash , put fire and let rust this to hell !!!!!!!!!

    let the memories alive !!!!!!!

  • great choice of song :D

  • so im guessing the tape part was meant to be placed inside a bag?? and the headphones&controller used externally, GENIUS!!!

  • Awesome collection. I would like to have an old Walkman (Never had one when they were new because it seemed way too extravagant although I was a teenager and would have loved it!) They seem very hard to find now!

  • they are so hard to find now and i have a Sony one but that was given to me by my family neighbor, i find walkmans and discmans last a hell of a lot longer then mp3 players eh!

  • Awesome video. Keep on with that good work!

  • masterlee... why would you buy music???? i really want to know how many people othere really buy music.... anyways... unless you wanna be the first to own a musicians cd .. i guess that ok.. jaa jaa

  • This was not that long ago you guys. Only about 9 years ago.

  • Put like $600 with of songs on my ipod nano, shit broke on me now I lost all my songs my ipod and my money. when back old school got me a sony cassette walkman, record all my songs on tape from a from a Sirius radio. Simple life again

  • call apple support that happend to me and they gave me a download for all the songs free

  • really cool

  • wait are u serious

  • yeah i swear but i dont think they can give you a download for like the music you have downloaded on the exact date from which they where deleted... but the rest is good but i also think the ipod games werent recoverd

  • Wow you are a fuckin moron, why you put all master copy of all your music in your iPod?

Learn to use external HDD as a backup.

  • One thing I must say about older electronis vs newer stuff. The old stuff was easy to use. It was obvious and simple. Each item did one thing. A phone was a phone, a stereo was a stereo. As a rule everything worked pretty well although it was limited in what it did. It was rare for something to break or malfunction right after you get it. It is like these days they are pushing to fast to release the new product and will work the bugs out later. LOL Life was simpler just 25 yrs ago. I miss it !!

  • @shananagans5

    (I know this is old)

Also sounded better too - the headphone amps were higher quality back then :D

  • @sneskid I totally agree. People nowadays don't seem to care as much about the audio quality. I recall messing with the equalizer constantly to get the sound perfect.

  • @shananagans5 Life was simpler when we lived in caves and threw shit at each other for entertainment. Innovations like smartphones (though there are some drawbacks to them, just as there were drawbacks to the first Sony Walkmans/Cellphones/computers/etc) improve the simplicity of things. As a rule today everything still works pretty well, you just have to fork out the cash for the better technology, just as you did back then. The only difference is price (justified b/c it replaces so many things)

  • @Hazelrat10 Thing is, in the 70s & 80s you expected things to last. It wasn't uncommon to have a 10 yr old home stereo with an equalizer that worked perfectly. It also cost more than stuff today but It also sounded better. That's actually my only real gripe. No need to make & pay for something to last 10+yrs when the new technology comes out in 2. I just wish sound quality was viewed as important again. Old Walkmans didn't sound good but home systems back then sounded so much better.

  • @shananagans5 But you can still buy great speaker systems for your home today. Really the only area where sound quality has significantly declined is the source. MP3/MP4 uses a large amount of compression, if you want the best sound quality it's best to get your music not digitally but through a CD. Yet CD's are still relatively common, used in (as you said) home speaker systems and wherever else you might want to see a speaker system. It's not outdated technology, no need to spew out nostalgia.

  • @Hazelrat10 lol CD's? That was the first step backwards on sound quality. Don't get me wrong CD"s were great & had huge advantages when they came out & I would never want to go back to vinyl but clean vinyl with brushes & a good needle has notably better sound. Running that through a multi band equalizer you can tinker to get that perfect sound for you. All I am saying is I wish sound quality was put before compact size & convience. With todays tech we could get amazing sound if we wanted to.

  • @Hazelrat10 Nowadays people just don't care about the sound quality. It's just kinda like that's good enough. To much emphasis is put on making it smaller at the cost of quality. Going digital is fine, even desirable but why not get great sound out of a unit just slightly larger or a unit that doesn't hold as many songs. You think I am going nostalgic. No, I like technology, just miss being able to catch the subtle details in music & hearing it in a really high quality format. That's all

  • Yes these things are better than the iPod with its horribly skanky touch pad thing that is a fucking whore to work with. Fuck the iPod!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • what a perfect song to play on this thing. wasnt this an 80s set? RIP Michael.

  • this one must have been expensive!

  • hell yeah! i love walkmans they're cool

  • i had a walkman CD player then it got damaged then I got a I pod and just ended up wishing I got another walkman to top it off a walk men came out that could hold 1000 songs two months later which was like a kick in the balls.

my next music player is sony all the way.

  • It's a nice unit. I think it's a masterpice from Sony!

  • wow. never seen a wireless headset walkman. i think walkmans are better than ipods.

    R.I.P Michael Jackson

  • R.I.P KING OF POP

  • it's kinda hard to choose...

  • This is Really cool! THX for posting

  • iPods suck!

  • wouldnt u say somethin moron !!

  • a walkman!!!! i was so cool at school listening to it =), then i changed to discman(pretty cool) and finally to ipod(i prefer them cause it is so much smaller...)

  • Nice, Still prefer the new network walkmans though, i just hate the long time it takes to record on cassettes!!!

  • I have SONY Walkman WM - FX 130 from 1994 - 1996... It cost about 400$ in Poland.

  • Tapes even sound better than MP3s.

  • I Agree!!

  • @toolongforyoutoread6 - It sure does! - I'd rather hear quality sound, than compress loads of songs onto a .mp3 player.

  • @toolongforyoutoread6 bullshit

  • @toolongforyoutoread6 I agree, but everything depends on the used hardware. If you compress MP3's at a ridiculously low bit rate it's no wonder they sound shit. All my MP3's have at least 256 kbps

  • @toolongforyoutoread6 Quite right, old bean.

  • that thing probably cost as much as an ipod in 1990

  • I didn't like Ipods.

  • Comment removed

  • BRB' now all i have to do is carry 600 tapes with me everywhere.

  • i love my iPod, but I REALLY WANT ONE OF THESE WALKMANS.

  • these are really cool classic pieces of equipment

    rare as well.

  • just because you dont have one

  • wireless headphone transmission? Now that's pretty damn cool. I like the hinge on that thing aswell.

  • I agree!

I have a Walkman (well 2 of them) and an iPod (ironically 2 of those as well) and I notice that my Walkman has much better quality than my iPod.

  • mr expert, check out any of the mp3 players before your godly ipod came out, and you'll notice they all did the same thing for less.

    i what? i-trend u idiot.

  • @HLM190586

(yeah I know this is old)

I love my iPhone more than anyone, but I have to say, that just because something is a "best seller", doesn't mean it's better.

This may not be as convenient, but recorded and played back PROPERLY, a tape can sound way better than an mp3 can.

Plus, the headphone amps in the older units are made from much better quality components and drive a good set of headphones much better and much cleaner, than the cheap stuff that is made today.

  • @sneskid

If you mean Digital Tape (DAT), yes its quality are better than CD.

But if you mean cassette tape, they will never be as good quality as CD and high bitrate mp3.

  • @HLM190586

No, I don't mean DAT. I mean analog cassette tape, like in this video.

Analog cassette tape VS. CD, it's debatable.

Analog cassette tape VS. mp3, my ears (and many others) prefer a properly recorded cassette tape.

  • @sneskid

Im afraid me (and many others) will disagree with you.

Cassette tape produce a lot of noise and its quality will degrade every time you play it.

Beleive me, I have cassette tapes and players too.

Audiophile listens to Vinyl and uncompressed music like CDs and FLAC.

I still stand by my opinion that mp3 players such as iPod and Zune are much better in many ways than cassette Walkman.

  • @HLM190586

I'm afraid a lot of others will not disagree with me. A good cassette tape can sound very good. If yours has a lot of noise, then perhaps your equipment is not very good or needs adjustment. Yes tapes degrade, but not as quickly as you make it seem. GOOD tapes last many years before sound quality really starts to go, and unlike mp3s, there are no compression artifacts.

I know what audiophiles listen to, I am one of them - and I also greatly prefer vinyl to cd.

  • @HLM190586

(continued from my last comment) That said, it's also a known fact that vintage units have much better construction. I can bet you that for one, the headphone amp in the unit that is featured in this video, is much better and uses much higher quality components than what's in modern players, today.

  • @HLM190586

    (continued again)

BTW, FLAC is compressed - however, it is LOSSLESS compression.

MP3s on the other hand, use LOSSY compression, where a large percentage of the sound is actually removed. You may not be able to tell the difference on a high bitrate mp3, but I sure can. This is where cassettes are better than mp3s.

Now realize that I am not knocking mp3s. They're great for times when you don't want to carry a whole bunch of stuff around. Portability comes at a cost, though.

  • cauze u r stupid ,moron.ipod is clolorful crap, how could it compare with 30years history of walkman, btw,it is walkman, not walkmen, jackass.

  • What, were you born yesterday or something? Geez! sometimes people just want to listen to music and not do 9587845757477574 other things at the same time, and not pay $599.99 at wal mart for something that you're gonna replace in a year anyway. Walkmans are cheap, reliable, and not overcomplicated.

  • jazz12grl,

I'm assuming that you're just a 12 year old girl not from the walkman era.

    1. I could care less if it shows videos as I own an iPod Video and have videos on it and never even bother watching them.

    2. Yes they do, but then again, who cares. It's about the quality of the tape player, not the color.

    3. It has better sound quality than an iPod (I also own 2 walkmans as well as 2 iPods.)

That's because you never left your parents basement your whole life.

  • For the walkman isn't ofwatching dancers you we're the Dancer!

  • I retired from iPods and iPhones. I still go back to Walkmans! I own an MD and CD portable with optical out. This I've never seen, extremely cool and i remember wondering why the iPod didnt have somekind of wireless audio capability. Sony was the first! Hot!

  • Wow someone like Sonicstage...

  • hehhe

it was billie jean by mj lol

  • woah! thats so kool!

  • cool

  • cooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooool

  • yes walkman pro v ipod

  • his is what ipod dont have history, trust sony theyve been making music players for years!

  • looks like w380 !! wow

  • cool

  • Thats bad ass!

  • I shouldnt have thrown this I had two of these one yellow and a silver one =[

  • that is sooo cool, its the 80's version of bluetooth what frequency does that thing run on like to transmit the audio from the walkaman to the earbuds, and can the wireless transmitter work on something like an ipod

  • maybe infrared ;)

  • I think its wireless like a cordless phone or thise audio link things that musicians use for their mics and guitars. look on the front of the unit it says "wireless" on it.

  • yes, wireless!!!!!!!!!!!

  • That's darn cool. A Walkman with wireless headphones! That was ahead of it's time.

  • i miss this sony walkman auto reverse fm am, now im using a disman atrac fm am coz cds are cheap...unlike the network walkman, u add music thru a pc usb port

  • walkmans will crack ipods in half

  • typical girl.

  • its a SONY!!! sony produce the most advance audio equipement, all the professional audio is created with sony equipment alll the studio records, THE BEST MOVIE SOUND THE SONY DYNAMIC DIGITAL SOUND for example that eats all others such ass dolbi, dts etc..., i have a network walkman hd-3 og 20 gb an it sound so great, but an ipod of 80 gb just can dream to have the same quality of sound.

  • Thats really neat. shows sony has always been innovative at its own pace.

  • chillicoke you rock men sony 4 ever :P

  • i have that one

  • What a Classic!!!!! that walkman is really RARE, i have a D-9 discman (1990), unfortunately is dead :-( , but my sony stereo system LBT-A595 (1994) still works and sounds AWESOME!!!!!!!

  • i have 2 walkmans actually 3 but i'm still fixing the other one
