Elephant Feeding Time At The Oakland Zoo

who says the keepers are afraid?? Those who beleive in a protected contact setting (such as the Oakland Zoo) don't manage their elephants out of fear, but do it so the human is not dominate over the elephant (such as in a free contact setting). In the wild, humans aren't more dominate, so who gives them the right to be in a professional zoological setting??

Just a note, this is NOT TRAINING a elephant, they don't train elephants anymore at the Oakland Zoo, the keeper's there are much too afraid to get close to the elephants and the keepers there keep their distance. I Love Elephants !

Tell me why people have to go to school? Same as why elephants need to be trained. The sommunication is important and even to people. How about all the trained elephants that saved many people lives after the Tsunami. Plus elephants should take walks everyday and not be penned up all day to.

Too bad there are no more elephant trainers at the Oakland zoo. It would be nice to have the communication and the elephants would love to take long walk's. Dont get too close if your not a professional elephant trainer, it could be dangerous!

Elephants need to be trained so that there minds are stimulated. It is great exercise for keeping them in shape and also helps in veterinary procedures. A progressive zoo like the Oakland zoo purely uses positive reinforcement. Some zoos like Busch Gardens in Tampa don't even tell their elephants no.

I personally know the elephant keeper there.

Yes, they do like I said if an elephant isn't trained how are you suppose to give it a blood draw? sedate for a simple blood draw when a few weeks will do the training. It is also great exercise for them and they enjoy getting the treats, so training is definitely necessary. I don't know where your from but you must know know anything about managing elephants if you think training should be aborted.

An elephant can be trained in a protected contact system meaning the keepers do not share the same space as the elephant. Quickly what is a elephants diet, when do they mature, when is a males 'must' ? How much water do they drink a day. What vegatations do they absolutely have to avoid because of poisoning?

Thank goodness for TRAINED ELEPHANTS ! Alot of people that care for elephants never pet them or give them the love they would get if they were trained, and they are afraid to get close to them anyway. Trained elephants have been trained for thousands of years and have even saved countless live's.

Right on, yes elephants do need to be trained and there are a countless number of trained elephants throughtout the world. We used to walk 2 elephants at a time, but I am retired now.
