  • Aphotic is sooo underrated guys

  • Something VERY similar to smooth katatonia is Agrajag.

  • awesome playlist man, highly appreciated, very well done, thanks a lot!

  • Thanks for this :) Needs Novembre, Swallow the Sun, Ulver though

  • @GameSlut Novembre is their, but i agree on Swallow the Sun being there..... and also has anyone ever thought maybe My Dying Bride or perhaps better yet, Paradise Lost?

  • Rapture is a very underrated band

  • blatant self promotion, go check out Trail of Ash. Heavily katatonia/swallow the sun influenced

  • Awesome bands!

  • Wow this is a great list

  • this video is total win just like Katatonia.

  • It's been long, more than ten years since Katatonia started having clean vocals,so why do you compare them with bands with extreme vocals? The bands you mention sound nice, though.

  • Absolutley love novembre, daylight dies, october tide! you forgot to mention the old dead tree tho!

  • try my personal murderer, dark/depressive rock

  • I would add Ghost Brigade, also a great band for me, kind of similar to Katatonia, adding some screams =)

  • Maybe this is not very similar to Katatonia's beginning sound, but I would suggest you :

    - Shape Of Despair

    - Evoken

  • Awesome video man !

Very cool since I'm a great fan of doom :)

I already known Forest Stream, Daylight Dies, Rapture, and October Tide of course !

And all the others are very cool too..

  • This is cool. Thanks dude.

  • Lol, everyone's arguing about the purpose of the video. It says similar to Katatonia in the title. Read it. All of the bands of elements of Katatonia in them. Good picks.

  • too bad the vocals on all these bands dont compare to jonas. I like the music but couldnt get into any of the vocalists.

  • spot on buddy, thats y katatonia is well known

  • If this video were made 10-15 years ago, it would be correct (Brave Murder Day, etc). Katatonia have sounded NOTHING like this for many, many years. Their sound has turned much more progressive in recent releases, either way it is as beautiful/numbing as before.

  • what do you mean? I really don't think the purpose of this video was to compare the bands to eachother or to katatonia. It's great that the author put together a group of musicians for people, who like katatonia, to discover.

  • No me agrado tu titulo, no hay bandas iguales, la similitud esta presente por que es un genero de musica, sin embargo cada banda plasma su propio estilo es un mismo genero.

  • i really dont think any of these bands are close to katatonia or each other i think they are all beautiful and different and all together amazing. dont compare bands or groups.

  • i want to find sm fucking paragon of beauty anyone ones where i ve been searching like crazy!!!!!

  • I figured Rapture would be on here

  • La canción 17 del grupo Yearning no se titula Bleak? :)

    Buen recopilatorio!

  • A french band (shoegaze?) called Alcest sounds very similiar to katatonia.

  • Bands should combine all their tastes (metal or not), and just blend it together in what you feel is really nice. (And REALLY not care what others think).

For instance; you might like certain songs from ABBA or John Denver, but don't like the cheesy imagine.

But at the same time enjoy riffs from old Metallica, but don't like the band's approach.

And you might really like the vocal style from Danzig.

  • Yeah that's exactly what i think there are way to many bands limiting there self to sticking to the one genre rather then revolutionizing and making up a new sound

  • I think many people here might agree; but there's too many copycat bands - to the point that it becomes really stale and unimaginative and boring.

  • I think too many bands are limiting themselves (without even realizing it) by trying to stick to genres; instead of just writing inspirational music.

Too obsessed with the genre; and as a result failing to create potentially great music.

If people can just break free from "what is true to the genre", and just let it flow...

  • yea

  • Dude... Slumber easily makes the top 3 on this list, no question. Fallout was an incredible album from start to finish... And look out for a new Slumber album in '09... can't fucking wait!!!

  • You fucking right... Slumber are fantastic...!!!

  • Couldn't agree more with you bro! And keep your eyes out for thier new long awaited album out this year! Cheers \m/

  • October Tide and Daylight Dies are the best of the list imho, for me it's some kind of noble metal, other than others, special :)

  • btw, check Wine From Tears, great music, i think there would be many more people who like them if they just know them!

  • yeah i loved 20 - 14 as well, the first few were awesome, however i did enjoy the majority, now i wish i could find some rapidshares for these bands, i just found some Paragon of Beauty which is a start. any help anyone?

  • ohhhh i love the band paragon of beauty but it is rare found music

  • Slumber...

  • octuber tide........

  • Thanx ujklp. Hails from Lima Perú.

  • On Thorns I Lay "A sparrow dances" from "Sounds Of Beautiful Experience"

  • Sick awsome video!

  • daylight dies and october tide

  • Great list. Nice to see someone that knows what the hell they're talking about.

  • whats the title of the song in 4:48 ?

  • Excellent job in adding The Loveless. That band is criminally underrated.

  • I feel 20-14 was possibly the best mix of "death'(ish) doom ive heard.

After that it lost that death feel, but was still a great play list

  • <3 Katatonia

    Blazing eternity souds very good

  • nice songs!

  • huh.. Rain Paint even uses the same font on their album covers..

  • ha ha ha yeah dude, i noticed that.

  • i bought both rain paint cds and i have owned an october tide one for a while now. katatonia isnt the only good band, but they are good too.

  • shane.... your a nurd :)

  • and yeah i know :)

  • Dude. Shut up. Don't you have a sense of beauty or something? or Don't you know Katatonia?? Dude.

  • Thanx for trying... but you failed because there is no band similar to Katatonia. because they are THE BEST! but good vid and songs.

  • i thought just the same thing. there is no other band like katatonia. they rule.

  • I am an old thrash/death/black metalhead from way way back. One of the reasons I like newer Katatonia is because they added a dimension with the clean vocals. The old metal I love wouldn't be the same without the growls, and that is why I love it, but I appreciate more and more the bands of the dark rock variety who make full and exclusive use of clean vocals. In a lot of ways, Katatonia are even heavier now. I consider my tastes to still be getting heavier. You can still be all about death.

  • katatonia = love

keep the great metal alive \m/

  • KATATONIA > ALL THESE BANDS.

  • except daylight dies, they're way better =)

  • @disgustipation I love Katatonia, but sorry to say this: NOVEMBRE> ALL THESE BANDS INCLUDING KATATONIA

  • mmmm... Love those compilations since you alwas can find something new !

Anyway i don't think katatonia is the greatest.

  • Nicely done. Great video. Katatonias the greatest band ever. Now everybody knows it too

  • the only thing that I don't much care for is that katatonia changed from their roots.

they are still a great band none the less.

  • I had troubles adapting to new era Katatonia at first but now I find it as good as the old death-doom phase.

And its a logical step after vocalist lost his ability to scream :/

Have anyone noticed how most of today's successful death doom bands are turning to this depressive modern rock?

    I wonder why.

  • Nice picks, I note a tendancy to want to pick more obscure bands which in the end is more fruitful than picking big ones like Agalloch. May I inject a recommendation for "Forest of Shadows" album "Where Dream Turn to Dust" which in theme and somewhat in sound always remind of "Brave Murder Day" in a slightly more gothic hue. "Wish" (which can be found here on youtube" and "Of Sorrow Blue" being great examples.

  • daylight dies crushes every band in this list though. then slumber.

  • these are very underground bands

  • Can you upload the entire song by Loveless "Follow".... I always wanted their album... I can't find it.. Thanks!

  • What about Agalloch and Forgotten Tomb? Very Katatonia inspired bands

  • whoa o.O bands that have been missing from my life. thanks for this video!

  • great video. October Tide sounds like older Katatonia in Rain Without End more than in Grey Dawn IMO.

  • Wasn't October Tide a side project of Jonas Renkse (vocalist for Katatonia) and Fredrik Norrman (guitarist for Katatonia)?

  • Yes it was.

  • After Katatonia off course, here is my top

1, Novembre (they got better song though)

2, The loveless (amazing! never heard before)

    3, Slumber (good, good sound!)

  • o.tide and rapture are in a whole different(upper) league i think.

  • The APHOTIC song sounds stunning,,,i immediately orderd there "Stillness Grows" Ep,upon hearing that song,,amazing,,i am forever searching for this kind of melancholic bliss that the amazing Sear Bliss has awoken inside me,,try the "Forsaken Symphony" and "Glory In Perdition" albums by these stunning Hungarians

  • the loveless ftw... ! deceiver > follow

  • PARAGON OF BEAUTY - HELL YEAH

  • PARAGON OF BEAUTY - HELL YEAH

  • well i don't know why, but DAYLIGHT DIES and RAPTURE are so fucking awsome and they should be in second and third, also FOREST OF SHADOWS, SWALLOW THE SUN, VALKIRIA.. where's fucking are they? I think that you have to remake the list...jeje

  • great job!!! you nailed it! katatonia is one of the greatest bands ever in my opinion.

  • great idea. because i always try to look for bands similar to katatonia, but can never find any because no one i know know's the entire katatonia discog the way that i do. I can hear elements of Katatonia in each band. This is really really cool. Thanks a bunch.

  • which katatonia album do you refer this bands to?

  • This bands refer to diferent Katatonia albums. Some bands refer to the debut DoDS (Forest Stream, Ancient Wisdom), another refer to mid-Katatonia period, another refer to new Katatonia. It is simply to guess, If someone know all Katatonia discography ;)

  • thanks!yes, you`re right,i only know the three latest ones

  • I thought it was a list of gothic music, this bands sound good, the firs one has a litle of gothic too... Metal music is good too... But i prefer gothic music... But nice job...

  • great job !!!

    You're crazy dude...

  • forgot agolloch

  • yep i agree.. great idea.

Let's spread the good music!! :D

  • nice idea
