@NotNamedJones Studios, Standards, & Customs are the same for the most part. Same woods, same construction, same hardware, same electronics. You pay more for cosmetics (multi-ply binding, gold-plated hardware, fancy inlays, fancy finishes, etc.). Studios are just plain-looking (for the recording studio) and Customs are works of art (for the stage), Standards are somewhere in the middle. But the quality is the same.
i have a big issue with gibson and epiphone. gibson bought out epiphone, their biggest competitor, in the mid-1960's. epiphone had a long, long history of making very quality guitars. mostly expensive jazz boxes. gibson then dissolved the epiphone company and licensed the brand name out to (then cheap) japanese guitar makers. all the cats at epiphone were out a job...so they formed guild guitars. and that's a true story.
@demilieu everything that you said here is only half true. guild was founded in 1952 by a music store owner and a former epiphone executive, but epiphone was still in business at that time. gibson bought epiphone in 1957, and epiphone production remained in the USA, in the kalamazoo alongside gibsons, until 1976.
@idontwannastop1234 91' Epi MIJ has same headstock as a Gibson. MIJ Epi's and Orville by Gibson are fairly high quality guitars. They com very close and in some cases exceed original quality. it isn't till Epiphone goes to Korea that you see the quality slip, and only because Gibson made them cheaper.
long time fender fan, traded, I traded sunburst partsocaster for it, the epi lp standard plus top cherry, I really love it, I traded off another unused srat for that BBking lucille, epi (great reviews I WS NOT IMPRESSSED.. was told that the korean epis just suck, the volume is like an on/off, so traded that for a black epi LP now have 2 beautiful looking, sounding epiphones that I really love, BUT they are really best for playing while standing up... still like a strat for comfort, trem etc.

Epiphone and Gibson are the only two guitar companies in the world that craft the real les Paul's and Sg's so why would you pay hard earned money for a copy when you can get a Epiphone or Gibson and have the real thing. I prefer Epiphone over Gibson!

The pickups are wound with enamel wire the bridge pu is overwound. Grover 14:1 tuners. And the list go's on. Epiphone has changed a lot beginning in 2008 to present.
There both a Gibson, you can tell from the tuners and Gibson uses the switchcraft toggle switch which is orangish while Epi uses a cream one, and non switchcraft.

There is difference between gibson and epiphone, lets example les pauls, Gibson's necks are wider, gibson's are heavier, same sound (I reckon) Different between prices, I think both are great.
@mrETOO22 gibsons heavier? considering most gibson les pauls are chambered where most epis are solid should mean gibsons are lighter. as for the necks that depends on the model, or in some cases the individual guitar, particularly with gibson who don't stick to any particular specification with neck profiles... each company makes a selection of different les paul models.
also they sound very different, particularly chambered and solid models - you should be able to hear a difference..
True, I'm not a professional musician but I've been playing the guitar for almost 47 years so I think I know the feel of a guitar neck and the sound of an instrument. If I was a pro musician yes....I would buy Gibson. But for a bed room musician or just to play at church, Epiphone is plenty good enough for my needs. I do own a Gibson though, a BB King Lucille.

I was there yesterday and played an $8700 Gibson Les Paul '59 re-issue and an Epiphone Ultra III. Honestly, I couldn't tell a difference in sound or playability and it would be a cold day in H... before I'd spend over 8 grand on a Gibson. Just the facts.

this whole argument is silly, start with identical pickups in each guitar then you will be able to have a real legitimate debate. Physical Epi's and Gibson's are built the same, the only real difference is the electronics and sometimes tuning heads and cosmetic pieces IE......trim molding and inlay material. I have the epi SG special. 169$ guitar and I think it's great, feels just as good as a more expensive guitar, but I think that it sounds better with some replacement pickups. all in all I am fond of my guitar, just didnt like the pickups

Epiphones history towers Gibsons. Epiphone along with a 16 year old genius by the name of les Paul invented The worlds first electric guitar in 1930 And the first solid body electric guitar in 1931. Epiphone is also responsible for inventing the first pickups and The wrapped around and stop tail bridges also. Epiphone is responsible for many other inventions for the electric guitar. Epiphone was there own company from 1873 to 1957. Im proud to own guitars with such important and great history!
You have a few facts wrong there... Les Paul did not invent the electric guitar but he is definately one of the Pioneers. LP's first "solid body" guitar was made in the Epiphone factory after hours (not by Epiphone...) in 1940. Epiphones first electric guitars came out in 1935. As far as I'm aware, the wrap-around bridge was first released on the Les Paul and SG Juniors by Gibson in the 50's.

Most of today's Epiphone Sg's and Lp's are every bit Gibson equal and even better. For The past 3 to 4 years Epiphones only down fall is there way underpriced form The quality they deliver today. And that will most certainly change to!
Haha. Build quality is pretty much on par, but with Epi you get Chinese factory built guitars. Bodies are nearly always multiple pieces and they have veneer tops (and backs on some models). PUs are weak and pots are crap. Overall though, nice and well priced.
Gibsons however, are not the top dog guitars people think they are. They are completely overpriced factory guitars with some of the worst quality control you'll see.
That is the reason epi's such as the Slash models and 1960 Lp standard 50th anniversary are such big deals for Epi. With good quality electronics and Gibson/SD pickups, upgraded jacks and switches. They address many issues Epi owners have had.However, I own a 1960v3, and several Gibson and Elitist Lp's, and the guitar ranks behind the elitist and GGibsons in most ways. The poly is so thick on the v3 that it appears to be preserved for archeoligists instead of being made for use.MIJ eltist better
Not true about all Lp's having only cosmetic differences. Maybe in the world of Epiphone, but in Gibson, plently of options depending on which model ranging from solid mahogany historic lp customes to maple tops on swiss cheese, chambered, and solid bodies. This over looks the plethora of pickup choices from 490 to 498,including various burstbuckers.Or eveen fretboard woods from obeche to torrified maple to rosewood. Caps change based on model as well. Every mod Epi owners make is already done.

long time fender fan, traded, I traded sunburst partsocaster for it, the epi lp standard plus top cherry, I really love it, I traded off another unused srat for that BBking lucille, epi (great reviews I WS NOT IMPRESSSED.. was told that the korean epis just suck, the volume is like an on/off, so traded that for a black epi LP now have 2 beautiful looking, sounding epiphones that I really love, BUT they are really best for playing while standing up... still like a strat for comfort, trem etc.

@mrETOO22 gibsons heavier? considering most gibson les pauls are chambered where most epis are solid should mean gibsons are lighter. as for the necks that depends on the model, or in some cases the individual guitar, particularly with gibson who don't stick to any particular specification with neck profiles... each company makes a selection of different les paul models.
also they sound very different, particularly chambered and solid models - you should be able to hear a difference..

If I was a pro musician yes....I would buy Gibson. But for a bed room musician or just to play at church, Epiphone is plenty good enough for my needs. I do own a Gibson though, a BB King Lucille.

Physical Epi's and Gibson's are built the same, the only real difference is the electronics and sometimes tuning heads and cosmetic pieces IE......trim molding and inlay material. He was closer to epiphone because of all his inventions were with epiphone and he played epiphone guitars long befor he even picked a gibson up. Its also a fact that if epiphone wasnt in money trouble it would have epiphone making the first les pauls not gibson. Now blompcube go away.

Papalespaul like I said befor the epiphones are so underpriced its realy pathetic but then again its thoes money hungry overpriced Bastards over there at gibson are why the epiphoned arei so underpriced. Papalespaul you can bank on that. Right the best standard Sg is the 2010 model epiphone G400 standard 62 Sg no doubt about it at all. As far as the Reissues moldel go its the 2011 epiphone limited edition 50th Anniversary 1961 Sg Reissue. They have been preferd over the gibson models.

Part-2 les paul always made it clear just because he's with gibson he will always be a epiphone man first! And he most certainly was all the way up till his death in 2009 at 94 years old. He was a great guitarist and human and inventor. Theres only one other genuis in the world that matches les pauls genius and thats edward van halen its not even arguble. I knew les paul personly. I use to see him play every monday night in new york. He always said epiphone gets a bad rap when in reality papalespaul he's the one that said epiphones are top professional quality. Are you realy going to argue with les paul him self NO! Your not. As a matter of a fact one of les pauls favorite guitars was a 2008 epiphone les paul custom. He liked the epiphones just as much as the gibsons. The epiphones even more because he played epiphones long befor he joined gibson

And today the epiphone limited edition 50th Anniversary 1961 Sg reissues are also preferd over the gibson models by vintage guitar collectors. Canaryreicyan Epiphone was in The united states for over 75 years before moving over sea's in 1976. Today Epiphone has been a American guitar company now over 110 years. The majority of Epiphones workforce in China are All from the USA from Top management to master luthiers. Today Epiphone Is once again a great guitar company Top professional quality. Epiphones history towers Gibsons. Epiphone along with a 16 year old genius by the name of les Paul invented The worlds first electric guitar in 1930 And the first solid body electric guitar in 1931. Epiphone is also responsible for inventing the first pickups and The wrapped around and stop tail bridges also. Epiphone is responsible for many other inventions for the electric guitar. Epiphone was there own company from 1873 to 1957. Im proud to own guitars with such important and great history!

You have a few facts wrong there... Les Paul did not invent the electric guitar but he is definately one of the Pioneers. LP's first "solid body" guitar was made in the Epiphone factory after hours (not by Epiphone...) in 1940. Epiphones first electric guitars came out in 1935. As far as I'm aware, the wrap-around bridge was first released on the Les Paul and SG Juniors by Gibson in the 50's.

Most of today's Epiphone Sg's and Lp's are every bit Gibson equal and even better. For The past 3 to 4 years Epiphones only down fall is there way underpriced form The quality they deliver today. And that will most certainly change to!

Haha. Build quality is pretty much on par, but with Epi you get Chinese factory built guitars. Bodies are nearly always multiple pieces and they have veneer tops (and backs on some models). PUs are weak and pots are crap. Overall though, nice and well priced.
Gibsons however, are not the top dog guitars people think they are. They are completely overpriced factory guitars with some of the worst quality control you'll see.
For the money, I'll stick with luthiers...

That is the reason epi's such as the Slash models and 1960 Lp standard 50th anniversary are such big deals for Epi. With good quality electronics and Gibson/SD pickups, upgraded jacks and switches. They address many issues Epi owners have had.However, I own a 1960v3, and several Gibson and Elitist Lp's, and the guitar ranks behind the elitist and GGibsons in most ways. The poly is so thick on the v3 that it appears to be preserved for archeoligists instead of being made for use.MIJ eltist better

Not true about all Lp's having only cosmetic differences. Maybe in the world of Epiphone, but in Gibson, plently of options depending on which model ranging from solid mahogany historic lp customes to maple tops on swiss cheese, chambered, and solid bodies. This over looks the plethora of pickup choices from 490 to 498,including various burstbuckers.Or eveen fretboard woods from obeche to torrified maple to rosewood. Caps change based on model as well. Every mod Epi owners make is already done.
