This song is actually called "Conversation with Death" similar but different from "Oh Death" made popular by Ralph Stanley...obviously same roots. This kind of song was called an answer song...2 singers would do it...one being the sinner and one being Death.
My mother wouldn't watch movies. She always had other things to do. She ended up loving Dumb and Dumber. I rented The Songcatcher for her. She watched it at least 3 times with me and then called her sisters and they came over to watch it. They grew up on this type of music and loved the movie. I have loved this movie from the first notes I heard! I was so happy to find something I could share with her and that we enjoyed together. We miss you , dear mama.
music can capture life and death, not capture like a picture or an expression, not expressing, but being, intertwined with, and at one with the most powerful feelings, and emotions, and aspects of life. Death. Life, Love. Hate. What the shit am i talking about? (too many beers) Great movie. great song.
im from just east of the mountains in NC i grew up listening to music like this. we have bluegrass festivals several times a year in which half of the music is mountain style.
i grew up listening to this music i live in the foothills of the blue ridge mountains my grandfather Jud Watson and uncle Arlie Watson played music all their lives and they have viseo and tapes of my uncle at the university of tennessee
@donnabuckner Thank You Donna.I've been listening to bluegrass music since the middle 1960's and have collected many songs. The Christian tradition which is brought down in much of the music would apply to any faith,so much so in my case I returned to my own Jewish religious tradition partially by that simple belief .
The first time I saw the movie I was instantly reminded of my childhood in the hills of Southern WVa, and instantly recognized many of these songs as the ones my grandmother used to sing when I was a child. Soulful, heartfelt, and fambulous. The music of the common people.
Loved this movie so much..this music is raw and soulful and real, like coming from the earth and up into these people's souls, and they are able to somehow sing the music of the earth purely and with passion. I really like Aiden Quinn, too...
I love this music. If you were to write something now with these lyrics it would be denounced as evil anti-christian blather. Quite the opposite though, I suppose.
My grand mothers name was Hazel and she sang like that also except she beat around on an ol sunburst guitar. she joked about going to the rest homes and singing to the old folks there she done it till her death at the age of late 70s sorry icaint remember her exact age..guess i couldhave just made up an age .who wouldhave known...me thats who........
this is an amazingly moving song!!the little guy that started it{he was in the movie warriors} does he do any recordings? and the ol, woman that sings last gives ralph stanley chills when she sings it....God Bless
The woman that sings last is Hazel Dickens. She's made several albums, is quite famous in old timey music and is considered one of the last singers of the original style. Still around.
Such a great scene and movie. I remember watching this over and over when it first came out. I dug out my old DVD collection after seeing this to watch it again.
this film is amazing, and I have been living and breathing this music since I first saw this. I think this is perhaps the most impactful scene of the film; something about it chills your bones and stays with you. Amazing vocalists, and while obviously not trained, they are able to captivate and convey every raw emotion of this unbelievably haunting song.
glad you all liked it.. i also grew up listening to this kind of music in the mountains of east tennessee...i also have some videos of old timers day at cades cove for those that would like to hear mountain music..thanks for the comments
@donnabuckner i grew up in western nc myself i reckon we are mountain neighbors.....back in the old days we woulda been neighbors....anyhow, this music is in my soul from a lifetime of loving it! no music in the world had the soul of some good ol mountain music......
I also thought she did a great job playing a mountain girl. I thought they all did a great job and I'm really touchy about outsiders playing us. The one that suprised me was Pat Carroll. I've only known her as a comedian. She had Viney Butler down pat. If you're from the mountains, you've known a Viney in your day. My favorite scenes change daily. I just really love this movie.
aetopus no i havent seen it...you might be able to rent song catcher from your library...i love the mountains would live there if i could..i will be in cades cove next month for old timers day
This is such a GREAT scene. I wish I could see this movie right now. As you can tell, I still haven't bought it. I'm going to check the other videos & try to find "When The Mountains Cry." It's one of my favorites.
I thought Rossum character was remarkable. Don't forget neither are Aidan Quinn or Janet McTeer hillbillies. It's what actors do, play parts, and all 3 were thoroughly convincing. In fact I was astounded how well Rossum sang in Phantom of the Opera as well. Well, here's to good movies, which are rare and hard to come by these days ;-)
Thank ayou

This song is based on a poem left in the prison cell by Anne Boelyn upon her execution: "O Death Rock Me Asleep" (See an Excerpt Below)
O DEATH, rock me asleep,
Bring me to quiet rest,
Let pass my weary guiltless ghost
Out of my careful breast.
Toll on, thou passing bell;
Ring out my doleful knell;
Let thy sound my death tell.
Death doth draw nigh;
There is no remedy. / My pains who can express? / Alas, they are so strong; / My dolour will not suffer strength / My life for to prolong.
