Yeah I liked the old points system how the overall performance of the entire season was important. Nascar is a business though they do things to get as much ratings as possible. The whole reason why we went to the new system is b/c some guy named Matt Kenseth had a 400 + points lead half way into the season in 2003 and the ratings really sucked as a result of it. That's the problem when you don't have a 10 race run off at the end somebody can take a big points lead and it's borring.
@JoeCamel23RedDog8 The Sprint Cup Championship will never be as prestigous as The Winston Cup. The Titles looked so much better back then, not this stupid trophy with two metal Checkered flags on it.
Are you high? Jr, the 3rd best short track racer of the last decade? Jr only has 4 short track wins! Kurt and Kyle both would be ahead of him, heck Tony Stewart is even ahead of him, Denny Hamlin even has more wins. I think you're giving him a bit more credit than he deserves, chances are, based on his name. And you're forgetting about JJ who has 10 short track wins in 53 tries! compared to Gordon's 15 wins in 115 tries. 1. JJ 2. JG 3. Kurt Busch. Jr is top 10, but no better
@gracethedog48 as much as I agree with your statistics, I don't call Jr good at short tracks just because of his name. He has, with the exception of the 2009 season, been more consistent at short tracks than most of the drivers you mentioned (with Johnson, Kurt, and Denny the exceptions) , finished top 10, top 5 in almost all races at short tracks.
LOL! not trying to win anything, just showin' the #'s. And, after looking at all of them, taking into acct top 5's & 10's, and not just wins, Jr has held his own with those other guys at the short tracks. Now if he could just get it together on the other tracks again.
Not enough passing was never a problem. That track never had a problem selling out before the resurfacing and widening. Paint swapping, bump and run, tempers, and fighting is what Bristol is all about. You want a cleaner short track race, watch Martinsville.
You know, as much as I love watching cars go 3 wide at bristol and be able pass on the high side. I do miss watching guys get left up high to dry and the finishes where so much more fun before.
The 97 race was way more exciting, he did it in the last corner on Rusty. Your right about the race not being as exciting anymore with the new surface and everything though
Nascar has once again fucked up their racing when they had to resurfaced bristol. Now you don't see any more of those classic bump and run and also the amount of cautions they prodcue in the race.
So actually RACING and legitimately PASSING another driver for the win is NOT racing, but somehow knocking him out of the way is? OK, I get it now. The new surface at Bristol is AWESOME because it gives drivers PASSING options in stead of a single groove on the bottom where you had to just plow someone out of the way like JG did in this vid.
yes! thank you! i just don't know why so many people like the new surface. any true nascar fan thats actually witnessed bristol and watched races from the past 15 years or so would know that it was a mistake to change. sure, it makes for more side by side racing, but it took away the beatin' and bangin luster that bristol was all about. Now, its just another short track.
Nascar, please stop making changes. The Chase, COT, Bristol, Talladega Repave, Yellow Line Rule, no racing to yellow..STOP!!
Um, did you not see the night race in 2008 when Busch and Edwards fought for the lead and bumped each other. And then got together again once the race was over and had choice words for each other. Last time I checked, that was on the new surface!
im so glad i can finally see comments for this vid, and u gys show the true respect both of these guys so rightly deserve.
im so glad u guys actually understand that this is fucking racing.
to me gordon is the best driver in the last 11 years. i mean sr. was great but i mean look at the wins in a shorter amount of time, with harder competition.
Rusty had this race won, I remember it well. He and Gordon were running the same speed all night, and as usual lapped cars were getting out of the way. All of them except Joe Nemecheck (who was driving for Hendrick at the time). He refused to move and held Rusty up for about 3-5 laps until Gordon could catch up. Wallace had to bump and run Nemecheck himself to pass him but by then Gordon was on his bumper.
Is that Alan Bestwick on the call? Holy shit, I feel bad for the guy, 6 years later and he's in the studio with loudmouth Wallace and some idiot that owns a car and has nothing to add.
Dr. Jerry Punch - YOU ARE AWFUL - RETIRE!!! PLEASE!!!
After watching this race, I realize how much of a double standard there is. In this race, Rusty bumped Kenseth out of the way for second, and later bumped Harvick out of the lead, an no one says anything. Jeff does the same thing, and everyone says it's a cheap shot. Rusty won nine times at Bristol; of those, how many times did he not put the bumper to someone to win? Jeff does it clean and skilled, and it's suddenly dirty, yet no one's says it's dirty when Rusty cheap shots Jeff at Richmond.
How is this cheap? (not arguing with you ChazzyJoe) Dale Earnhardt Sr. "moved" guys every week and he's the most loved racer ever! If Gordon had wrecked him or got him loose, that'd be one thing. But he nudged a slower car outta they way THEN proceeded to check out on him. That's racing! Same applies to the move Carl Edwards put on Kyle Busch two weeks back. Never could understand Busch's reaction, his anger, resultant retaliation and the "rivalry" that's ensued...
Wtf are people talking about like everything was handed to him?? think about yea he had the best of the best but so did everybody else and who ever drove better is gonna win and you cant be handed a cup ride!! stop bashing gordon. earnhardt and gordon are great drivers!
Yeah rusty should of won this race, before this with about 20 to go, the lap of car of jerry nadeau, gordon's teammate, was holding rusty up, forcing rusty to use up his tires trying to get by him, then once jeff got to him it was all rusty could do to try to win. thats racing tho...
Oh man that was nothing compared to Junior's dry spell. Every week... "It's been 70-something races, is this week the week? Let's talk to Junior about it!"
Under the old system, he would've won in both 2004 and 2007. I know he wasn't the champion because of the stupid points system, but don't act like he's not good anymore, because he is.
@Gforcebond Yeah he is the only reason why johnson has 4 championships is the chase system. If it was the old system which is the better one he would only have 1 champuonship. Like ive always said the championship should not be determined by the final 10 races it should be how your team pefroms throughout the season.
@TheHighRoad7 If you've watched this season, Jeff Gordon's still got the champion driver skills. He's just had a series of bad luck days, mistakes, etc. How he won at Pheonix though should be proof enough that the #24's still in the game. Plus, the new points system could play in his favor for once: if Jeff stays in the top-20 in points, and nobody else between 11-20 gets more wins than him, Jeff can get into the chase. Then he's just gotta out-perform 2-time real, 3-time fluke.
Fuck Gordon. I can name several drivers that were better than Gordon. Lets see, Richard Petty, David Pearson, Cale Yarborough, Dale Earnhardt, ect. Gordon is a Hell of a driver but nowhere near the best.
ummm im sorry to say...but gordon still has a bit of racing left...hes going to get over 100wins..he's going to rewrite the record book so yeah..btw gordon broke earhardt's record for most restrictor plate wins and ummm gordon has more wins than earnhardt..do the math son.
Earnhardt died dumbass. If he would of lived he would of won more. I agree that Gordon has some racing left but he will never winn 7 championships. Gordon was handed everything to him in racing while people like Petty, Earnhardt, Pearson, ect. had to really work.
Why do u have to use that he died as an excuse? After Jeff Gordon started racing earnhardt only won like 8 times and 0 championships, so quit using that as an excuse.
Dale Earnhardt finished 2nd in points in the year 2000, and had a car fully capable of winning the 2001 Daytona 500. Also, Dale averaged more points in the year 2000, than did Gordon's championship run in 2001. Dale also SCORED more points in 34 races in 2000, than Tony Stewart did in 36 starts of 2002. Hands down, if Earnhardt had lived would have at LEAST 8 championships, and probably 10 or so more victories. Stats don't lie buddy.
In addition, don't forget, his success was drastically altered after 1996 Talladega, (another season he would've won the championship). Also, contrary to popular belief about Dale's positive 2000 season, he had very misfortunate luck, and several mis opportunities of wins through no fault of his own. Earnhardt is by FAR a better driver than Gordon. If Earnhardt had the ride Gordon did, as young as Gordon did, there'd be no comparison.
They have been saying that since 96 when i started watching i guess they have nothing better to do but live on something completely dumb for more than a decade. They should just get over it gordon is a great driver and did not have a thing handed to him jr nation do your damn research before you speak they might learn something.
fucking bull shit! in 2004 jeff gordon scored the most points, but ur bs logic he wouldve been a strong contender for the championship in 2005 but that didnt happen.
Are you seriously that illiterate? I said, in 2001, and 02', you fucking moron. Yes, undisputedly, Gordon is a 6-time champion. Further, Jeff had a dismal 2005 season, so I don't know what you're talking about. I suggest you not undermine anyone's logic when you're too retarded to interpret basic vocabulary. Try hooked on phonics.
Earnhardt died dumbass. If he would of lived he would of won more. I agree that Gordon has some racing left but he will never winn 7 championships. Gordon was handed everything to him in racing while people like Petty, Earnhardt, Pearson, ect. had to really work.
