  • I never got to see this band live.

  • ha ha, i'm front and center for this....

  • After all these years......one of the most impressive riffs i ve ever heard.

  • Fuck whistlers. If you want some really explosive hardcore punk, have yall checked out 400 blows. Definitely reminds me of 'meantime' Look for Sickness and Health.

  • @jal3745 Never heard of 400 Blows so I checked them out here for about 30 seconds. You're right. Very right. The drummer alone, man.

  • Try the SMASHING PUMPKIMS on TV in Brazil with the Song AVA ADORE it s kinda same powerful

  • unsung never gets old one of the most powerful music vids here on YT

  • Helmet is Bad-ass.....love em

  • I think it's very sweet how they show to those longhairs how to play music really hard. =)

  • fuck yea 1991 the yr i was born

  • geez does anyone not comment on how awesome this song and video are anymore? lol cuz i could listen to it all day haha

  • stop the damn whistling!

  • @sowdster12 huh?

  • @NoPawn some lady kept whistling or sometin its annoying as hell!

  • @sowdster12 Oh, I hear it now! I never noticed it before!

  • @NoPawn yea haha its bad

  • @NoPawn Some Jersey whore. Worst.

  • @sowdster12 those of us with A.D.D. hate the whistling!

  • Comment removed

  • His voice always reminded me of "good" Ozzy

  • I liked when Paige would sing this way. He had a unique, dark-sound to his tone. Ever since Size Matters came out & also on Monochrome he either sings with a rasp or a higher pitch.

  • yeah

i love that tone on in the meantime

  • there still are not many bands that sound like this.they sound like a nasty machine.the drums are killer.

  • haha that ass "you gonna play or just look pretty" what a dick. i bet he didn't think he was gonna get his ass rocked off

  • beer runs the mouth

  • my buddy has this show on vhs! it's money dude. the true killer helmet line-up!

  • Either you or your buddy has a duty to the music gods, punishible by being forced to endure hrs. of live Britney Spears bootleg tapes, if the mentioned 1 live helmet bootleg is not posted in its entirety here on youtube for all the Helmet minions to enjoy. : )

  • Look how fucking young page looks/is!!!

  • no shit dude, unreal. i met him at a show about 5 months ago in st. louis and he looks old as dirt. still jams a muthafucker though

  • Aggro rock.

  • i like their stlye, dont the guitar player look like the one from green day(with the red pants)

  • weak crowd. i would consider them hardcore. mabe even hardcore punk. but there a little to heavy.

  • grunge man!

  • Not grunge.

  • Not even CLOSE to grunge.

  • @mplsmk2gti this is ABOVE grunge

  • i would say grungrock or grungemetal. i mean the solo sorta sounds metal but today metal is considered alot of different things.

  • i agree with tauroscorp. How do you define metal then? alternative metal was very popular in the 90's. some examples are korn, faith no more, rage against the machine, and powerman 5000, and obviously helmet. They are all alternative metal and "metal" in my book.

  • I think that in this day and age you would be right, but at the time that Helmet came onto the scene, they wouldn't be seen as metal. Hell, punk is considered metal in a lot of circles now too, and that was considered the kiss of death to a punk band back in the day.

  • Good examination, I would have to agree with you on most of those, certianly helmet, the Dude is 50 and he still rocks out like a 25 year old

  • @BlakeBoseph there considered post hardcore/punk...for that time ..they came up from thru the nychc scene...

  • Still can't get enough of this clip, one of the best music clips on all of utube imho.

No way Helmet is metal, you can't be metal without double bass right? If they had to be classified I guess I'd say they are kick ass, "what kinda music is this", i'd reply; "its kick ass" nuff said lol. But really those that are into categorizing would likely call Helmet Nu Metal.

  • I would say hardcore if you want to get nuanced about it. They are straight up NYHC.

  • are you gonna play or look pretty?..HAHA!!.. HELMET STILL RULES!.. in my opinion, helmet was never "metal", however they rocked much harder than most in the early 90's..

  • I can see how they can be confusing. They are heavy art Rock, not very sure how Metal they are. My guess is that they are Metal rockers playing H-art-d Rock. ???

  • Their song, Unsung, is my favorite Helmet song!

  • No way its their worst...listen to the other stuff for fucks sake

  • wow

  • Helmet introduced the 90's to the audience who were still in the 80's. =) Helmet is the best metal-band ever, they were really original in everyway.

  • The are NOT metal

  • They are metal!!! Doesn't matter what people with ''metal-image'' are saying... =)

  • Its not the image, its there music. Its not in any way shape or form metal.

  • He is right, they are roots reggae.

  • no, they are scandanavian grindcore

  • lol

  • How u define metal then..? Are u somekind of purist..? Sure it has for example also jazz-influences in it but why not to call it metal..? It's usually defined post hardcore or alternative metal, so alternative metal isn't metal? =P Then Korn or Faith No More aren't metal either. And are u serious when u said scandinavian grindcore..? =)

  • And if we are prcise and if it's not metal, it's not shaking my world. Helmet is one of the best modern bands ever!

  • I remember page hamilton saying in an interview way way back then that Hendrix's Fire was an indirect influence on the main riff. You can hear it in Stainer's fills early in the song.

  • im so addicted to this clip.

  • I need a live version of Turned Out after that :(

  • Did they do that around the Unsung time? My Helmet history is a little jagged.

  • If this was recorded in 1991 it was actually before the release of Meantime. Since i'm old enough to remember :(, meantime was supposed to save the world from the grunge movement of the 90's, it was highly anticipated, but fell short commercially, which was a good thing imho.Hard rock at the time consisted of slayer, metallica and hair bands, then came this redefining how and who could perform this kind of music. What made helmet great was the core, stanier, bogdan and page, they fit like a puzzle.

  • Let me see if that is on this video.

  • I have the whole show on videotape, and yes they did play "Turned Out" and yes it was amazing

  • man you need to share that please !!!! :D

  • Stanier is god

  • always ahead of there time

  • Very precious Footage !

    Awesome Guitarriff.

4 smart Guys who showed the Crowd what they didn t knew before.

I believe in bcastine`s Words, you`re right Dude.

  • " although wet eyes would never suit you ... "

  • This video just illustrates what it must of been like being helmet back in 91. The mullet heckling "are you gonna play or just look pretty" had no clue what he was about to hear, surely could not fathom that this sound was gonna come from these pretty boys. These mullets had no clue they were witnessing music history, music so far ahead time, 4 people just flat out destroying all the rules of hard rock, 4 guys that knew the people in the crowd had never heard something like this before.

  • To be square, I believe that was someone they knew poking fun at them a bit. I don't think they were really trying to dis the band.

  • Looks like the guitarist with the cig in his mouth is sporting a black eye. This album sounds as fresh today as it did back then, floors me everytime i play it. Band should be proud for having such a distinct sound in a time when grunge was the it thing.

  • I saw 'em live twice. Thanks for postin' this old school HELMET. Love it!

  • John Stanier is really an awesome drummer, the beat is so so tight and metronomic it doesn't move at all

  • What's amazing is that I think Page STILL plays that red ESP guitar!

  • BTW NoPawn: you should post the version of FBLA II from this show. Not only is it one of those interesting "work-in-progress" versions, but it has my all time favorite Stanier moment, the fourth drum fill near the end. (I have the whole show on video but I don't know how to rip video clips onto a computer.)

  • Thats my favorite stanier moment as well. Do you have the limited edition european betty release? Has an awesome live version of fbla II, drums are unbelievable in that release.

  • Sure do, bcastine ... I only wish I could get the full recording from that L.A. show. The five tracks they included on the European CD of "Betty" are good, but where's the rest of the show?!?

Anyway, Helmet rocked. Page is still great but I'm not so keen on his decision to play the old stuff in Drop-C now. I think they should switch guitars and play each song in its original key.

  • LOL thanks NoPawn - I didn't think anyone would think I meant that Helmet is a "new" band now. They were back then though. This show was before their breakthrough album "Meantime." I meant to convey an image of several fans standing still in awe/amazement, which is why the crowd wasn't moshing enough acc. to some of the comments.

I also remember wanting to help by fixing the mic stand, but being afraid I would offend or annoy Page.

One of the best $5 shows I ever saw! Jawbox opened.

  • As someone who was at this show (I'm the tall red haired dude in the very front), I can say this much: they opened with a brand new, unrecorded song that would of course become an anthem, in time. I imagine most of the other audience members were, like me, standing in absolute awe of this terrifying new band, paying close attention to hear what wild time twist Page was gonna throw out next.

  • helmet isnt new..

  • No, ifutureman was reminiscing about when he was at this show. He wasn't saying it happened now.

  • hahaha that sucks that the mic stand starts falling

  • Those stands suck.

  • good..but the crowd were a bunch of ass holes....lol

  • Nothing beats a New Jersey crowd!

  • very nice drums, i love helmet

  • the crowd are a bunch of winey drunken bitches

  • that crowd sucks ... i would be bouncing

helmet .. wish i was there

    thanx for posting

  • god what a retarded crowd. good performance, but the feedback in the beginning is annoying.

  • Jon Stanier played with the Mark Of Cain one of the heaviest most amazing Australian bands of all time, chaekc em out, you wont regret it.

  • john stanier was the best thing about helmet

  • fucking ignorant no clue crowd.

  • Hey somebody post some Handsome shit.....come on now....that would be all right by me!

  • this place is 10 minutes from my house!

  • best song. great video!

  • Best song ever.

  • You are the man for posting this. Greatest band. O.G. line-up. Best album. Great perfomance. Take that!

  • the Brighton!!

all hail Jacko- the king of Punk, and the guy who books all the shows at the Brighton

glad to see this bit of history survive

  • Love the barking drunk in the crowd. Sippin' on his liquid courage.

  • I was at this show. My ears rang for 2 days after.

  • Hell no. Their "strap it on record" came out before this in like '89.

  • I love this song. Was this one of their first peformances?

  • holy shit
