The failure could be prevented by mounting some form of vibration damper at the front end of the crankshaft that is capable of absorbing and dissipating the majority of the vibratory energy, especially on a vintage machine. You can get harmonic damper from a junk yard, from a BMW pulley then fit it to the hub area. This could save you from another serious damage and down time. I really like this video.
One of the common problems associated with steel is harmonics. Gray iron solves that problem and that is why it makes sense in machine tooling. However, when you combine steel components with ductile gray iron, there is a conundrum: steel wants to resonate energy at a different frequency than the iron. By placing a SouthCo Turnlock receptacle mounting the main planetary gear, torqued at 23.4 in lbs, we were able to reconcile the 25 hz harmonics with the 40 hz to equal ZERO. Solved!

You look like a new man at the end, I think I just had a tear come. Nice work fixing that baby up, i hope she holds longer then the old casing :). Good luck.
Fantastic!!! I've loved coldsaws since I first met one.. I blew the first chance to get one that I had years ago because I really wanted a bandsaw for the ability to cut curves. Now that I have seen yours in action and your fantastic cut line I'm re-invigorated.. I never did find a suitable band saw.. but I believe that after working in my buddy's shop with a huge Johnson Cutoff and then the even larger Kalamazoo he now has, I"m more convinced that the cold saw is the way to go...
Yes, I did. They didn't even have a parts break down for this 1985 unit. But after a few emails back and forth between me, Pedrazolli USA and Pedrazolli Italy, it was revealed that all vertical down feed unit heads were interchangeable. Replacement parts to make repairs are not available new however.
Even though my saw is fixed and running again, I still, to this day, run automatic eBay/Google searches to find more used units in the states so I can be prepared for the next breakage. It has been 8 months and nothing has surfaced.
Accuracy is often slow, get a tungsten-carbide tooth equipped chainsaw. Those glasses will not be durable enough for this, an arrangement for rip-cutting steel-plate would be quite a show. This would be justified as a method of avoiding, kickback from the blade pushing against the push-stick.
I had to mill down the gib that adjusts the dovetail ways. Also, since the replacement did not have a pneumatic vise, I had to drill and tap a few holes to migrate the pneumatic related components to the replacement head. Other than that, it was identical.
dude you must be on crack, the good crack! this is brilliant! little long, i zoned out but its funny as hell! id say cut it to 4 - 5 min and it would be perfect. What did you cut this footage w/? FCP? you should add transitions, a cross dissolve here and there can make any clip look smoother. Keep up the good work, cuz i cant get off my ass and think of something this good to shoot... <=(

Just caught sight of your series. As someone who works with their hands as a craftsman, I can appreciate what you do. I've always wanted to do some machining; maybe someday.
