I know a number of big Dans in the Bujinkan and they are not to be trifled with. The movie version or sports oriented view of what a martial artist should look like does not hold up in the real world.

Soke had 2 Dans execute the same technique, one Dan was in his late 20's one was in his late 50's, each Dan did the technique in a different way.

Soke's response was, this is the taijustu of a man in his 20's and this is the taijutsu of a man in his 50's both are right.

I'm trying to use my instinct wherever i go and whatever i do. The hardest part i think is to not mix up anxiety with instinct. You need to make a difference between the 2 and try to concentrate only on instinct , trowing anxiety out of your mind.. I still cant fully do that..

Is it me, or the guy giving the sakki test goes way too low in his strike? you usually don't go down further than the shoulder length on this kind of strike, the guy looks like he is going to fall forward.

This is a test the object is to see if you can fore see danger not to see if the person behind you hits you. The swordsmen objective is not to hit the guy but to create the feeling for the test taker to see if he reacts soon enough.

bob, bob, bob. too many sit the test too early when they are not ready. i wonder how many would take the test if they were only ever allowed one go at it? then, it would be test of intention perceiving, not a test of luck. go back to a real sword, sort the men from the boys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@dhw1971 your right, legends says it was with a real sword. Now a lot of people can accomplish the feat because they are granted to succeed, didnt earn it. even with a fake sword, you should be alowed to move only once during the test.. mot more.

You dont actually feeeeeeeeeeeeel danger, you can hear the breathing of the guy behind you when he arms for his strike. of his clothing moving. I think you have to relax focus on his presence, its really though, i am not saying. but its not like ninjutsu guys have spider sense of anything. let them try this blindfoldede and with earprotectors on. I garantee you they will all fail.....fail fail fail fail

I cant prove anything, but i believe there is much more to it than only the five senses. Just like you said spider senses, but not like in spyderman. But i think those spider senses are the same thing as instinct. Have you ever had a bad feeling about something and you avoided it ( a street for example) not knowing why? Animals have it a lot, we mostly suppress our instinct. But it can be surfaced with time and work.

Its not the cut that is important in the test. It is knowing the intention of the cut. So in a way it is irrelevant whether the distance was too far.

Hatsumi no longer cuts for the test. He lets the Shihans do it. Let's say your from France...he asks if there is a Shihan from France present to cut down for you. I was told that test is for both the cutter and receiver. If the cutter has no intentions of killing you while he/she is cutting down, the receiver will not move. So the godan test is actually harder now imo and if the sword just nicks you or you don't role away to safety, it is an automatic fail. Good luck to all future Godans!

I was at this event where Ralph Severe passed this test. Funny thing is that Ralph got his 5th degree black belt (godan) after only 4 or 5 years of training. i know for a fact that he had no ninjutsu training prior to 1984 and he didn't get his 1st degree black belt until 1987 or so. what a joke!!

No this part of a test to progress to Godan or 5th black belt. Only a part of the test. The rest I believe at Godan is a demonstration of proficiency with all the techniques learned in that dan levels training, demonstrated agaisnt a higher ranking student. Thats the full test. Don't let the name Ninjutsu fool you, there are no smoke and mirrors in this art, just great technique. This is just testing your ability to FEEL danger, which comes naturally but needs to be honed and focused to do this.

the tester after hatsumi sensei was standing too far away, he only began to lower the bokken after the testees began to roll and it looked like he would have struck the floor even if they failed to evade. this 'soft' testing does nothing to legitimise the traditional arts, already under scrutiny for their alleged inability to adapt and evolve compared to todays progressive mma, jeet kune do etc. have you seen the utube 'human stungun' clip? laughable and ludacrious. these fakers must be revealed

@johnm543 - The uke they would use would be a lower rank, you never use a higher rank for an uke. None of these guys were about to feel danger. In my opinion the first guy just got lucky and the last two people didn't even have to move and the cut would've hit the floor anyway.
