Oh, and nice review by the way. Indeed, the 1986 movie does have numerous continuity errors and whatnot. And yes, I sympathize with you about all the character deaths that have scarred many of the fans. But otherwise, this movie is still timeless. And besides, Prime comes back towards the end of season 3. And that for me was the highlight of season 3.

The whole Sunstreaker thing has been explained as his brother Sidesswipe was on earth painted yellow by accident with Kup, Huffer and Bluestreak at the roadblock that Hot Rod breaks threw. Another thing that bugs me is the Dinobot Snarl is missing for most of the movie! You see him inside the Shuttle as Prime gives the order to "Destroy Devistator!" (sp) and then he is gone for the rest of movie, but then shows up in season 4... ALOT of problems with things like this, but over all a great film.

What I don't understand with the whole Optimus Prime thing is

1. Optimus Prime dies in the movie!!

2. Optimus Prime dies again in the episode Dark Awakening where he ends up by the end of the episode severely fucked up with an arm getting ripped off and some of his face and then crashes in the supernova.

3. Optimus Prime returns again in the episode Return of Optimus Prime where at the beginning of the episode he is seen sitting in a chair in perfect condition, he is rescued and then bought

You failed to mention that G1 was about Transformers. Michael Bay's movies were about some people, their hormones, their parents & their precious garden... oh and there were "some" robots in there as well. Over an hour to finally see an Autobot fight a Decepticon. The movie should of been called

"Humans" guest starring some Robots.

I was 6 when i saw this ib theaters. 1. I was both thrilled and pissed when that asshole Starscream died. Problem is, I love that prick. 2. Seeing wheeljack dead was horrifying. 3. Prime dying here was NOTHING compared to when he was brought back the first time in the series. You guys recall that episode? I think it was Dark Awakening. I loved this movie, I cried when they killed Prime and got shocked when they killed Starscream. I remember I had it on video when I was a kid, and the first time I saw it I was crying during Prime's death scene, and almost felt like I was going to have a premature heart attack when Starscream gets shot by Galvatron, but I could get over it and I saw it to the end. I really liked the end, when Hot Rod becomes Rodimus. So I really think this movie was awesome.

I liked this movie. I'm not an 80's kid so I didnt grow up seeing these guys, I saw the armada guys so I didn't feel bad. But now I've seen pretty much every episode of every american series and I see your point. Seeing heroes die is one thing. But seeing your heroes die in ways they survived countless times in the show is crap. Only the popular characters (optimus, starscream) died in a way that you would say wow! Or O Crap! Or something like that. This is an awesome movie and honestly I like

Even though the movie affected/affects you on a personal level, you shouldn't let that affect the score or the overall review. I'd give it a 4/5; it has balls. All the characters that died came back anyways so it's not like it's a big deal.

Likes: Animation is better, Optimus kicks ass like always but died for our sins, Leonard Nimoy, Orson Welles, Eric Idle, both Stan Bush songs, and daring to be stupid XD.

Dislikes: Hot Rod, Rodimus Prime, Wheelie, Optimus getting killed, and Starscream getting killed.

Those are the only ups and downs I have had with this movie.

Cool review Sean, I have to agree with you. As a kid when I saw this movie I was crushed!!! Most of my favorite characters killed off in the first 20mins of the movie did not sit well & for a while I had beef with Hot Rod. Got love for him now, but in 1986 to me he was Rodimus Punk!!! Lastly, why couldn't the Junkions use their that "Special Turtle Wax" to fix Prime....I mean he was still in one piece unlike Magnus right ?!? Lol. Great job Bro, keep em coming :D

Does anyone realise that if Hot Rod did not jump Megatron he would of killed Prime before he would have passed the matrix. So it would have died with him and nothing could stop Unicron from destroying Cybertron.

Megs would've fired, missed & got a laser blast through his keppy thus no Galvatron & Unicron would've looked elsewhere for some prime real estate to munch.

People always fight me, on this movie. I can't get past the fact that the characters I wanted to see get killed off, and some in the first 20 minutes. I liken it to watching a Justice League show and they kill of Superman, Wally, GL, Batman, Joker, and a lot of others, leaving you with backups, as main heroes. That was just lazy storytelling. they had no other way to introduce other characters? How could you think that killing off people that the audience grew attached to would be good?

I watched the special features about the reaction to Prime and crew's deaths. The writers were totally unapologetic. It was a business decision to them. They wanted to clear out the range to add more toys. Epitomizes the 80's so well. A bunch of souless tools that thought of the cartoon, which was a big part of our childhoods, as 30 minute commercials.

When I seen this movie as a kid, I was sad as well. I was sad and angry. They killed Prime, yet he comes back only to be killed again...I think Prime was a character that represented hope. Hope never dies. Prime is our hope. The other character deaths were pretty shocking. I mean the first ten minutes of the movie, the Decepticons are planning on attacking Autobot City on Earth and the first Autobots to go are Ironhide and the others. I had to give it four stars, extra one for the music.

i dont really think Rodimus got in the way and got optimus killed. even if he didnt appeared, optimus would die anyway. so what? in the comics, Rodimus didnt even got there to stop disaster and Optimus died anyway.

i think the reason why ultramagnus was able to be brought back to life was because his spark was still intact, so he was able to be reborn. prime on the other hand probably suffered severe inturnsl damage, and had his spark cripled

See Sean, I loved that movie, but understand where your coming from. I wasn't one of those kids who sat in the theatre, course cause I'm 16, but even watching it on DVD I sat there, crying as Prime died. Also, on the decepticon biased thing, bad guys sell better than good. Think about it, more people wanted to see Shockwave then a g1 autobot. Just my thoughts.

Great Review!!! I think this movie was one of the best even though there were a few flaws. I think the death of prime was the best for the autobots and also the worst. The animated movie is still my favorite!!! I make a point to watch it once every six months. I do forgive the deaths because all of those characters were brought back. Also, unlike the Michael Bay films, the action is easy to follow where as in the live action, sometimes the fighting characters move so fast that it's a blur. With the Bay films, I don't have an emotional connection to the characters as I did with G1. When Prime "died" in ROTF, it seemed really cheap. I just love the first film!
