this solo was in the movie Almost Famous the movie about the great group Stillwater..does any one know if John made this solo?? or if it was recorded by another artist
sorry...im i missing something here???dont get me wrong, i think he is an amazing guitarist, bust i think its the worst intro i think ive ever heard them do, maybe its the sound quality too, coz i cant here the bass, beforre everyone goes off at me, thats just MY opinion.
It's definately more than just a DS-2, its combination of his amp, a DS-2, Big Muff, and his WH-10 wah pedal. Either way its one of the sickest tones ever...
I'm pretty sure at the time John didn't have that pedal in his arsenal, although I agree that the Mossrite can duplicate that tone pretty well. I think John was definitely using is Big Muff on full tone with his amp cranked... Not to mention the WH-10 gives a pretty big boost in the tone
How nice is John's 'How Deep is Your Love' Bee Gees cover played at this concert. Really nice, also cool to see his mistake, shows that he is human like us all. Great band.
I respect those two, but I am much more into Hendrix and Frusciante, I can fully understand what they are trying to say through their guitars.. peace. over and out.
imagine everybody singing bebopabalula and then comes the man for example with machine gun(the song, not the gun).. it's difficult to imagine because we listen to so many genres not even knowing that we do.. both Hendrix and Frusciante show that they enjoy what they do, they fall on the floor, make all kinds of faces and just act free on stage.. I've never seen Vai or Satriani do that, but again that could be their style..
vai and satriani are guitar robots thats why. they got no feel. cant go outside of the box. thats my opinion anyway. Frusciante and Hendrix are innovators
Satriani has been showing a lot more feeling in his later stuff... but Frusciante has got the life's troubles to back him up when he puts his soul into one single note.
@jakeblandjk47 excuse me what?? i don't think there are many guitarists out there with more feel than Vai and Satriani.....bar maybe Petrucci (when he plays the slow stuff) and a load of blues players like Bonamassa, Clapton etc......
@jakeblandjk47 funny, both those guitarist frequently go out of the box and are very creative. john sites at least vai as an influence. people write them off as soulless robots because they like to play fast sometimes.
telling someone they're emotionless because they play lots of notes is just as bad as telling someone they're bad for playing slow. I personally don't listen to them b/c I don't like their style, but that doesn't make it bad. they love music just as much as everyone else does
im studying at UCLAN doing a Music Degree in experimental music - its boring.
frusciante has RAW feel which is what makes the difference for me. yeah, maybe i was wrong to say they got no feel and are guitar robots but i do however find them boring.
wait, so your studying music in college gives you the right to say what's boring and what's not? although I agree, it's boring, it's simply a matter of taste.
plus, creative music doesn't come from classrooms. I'm sure whatever you're learning in your experimental music courses is extremely useful, but if you think it puts your opinions or ideas above anyone else's (although I'm sure you don't) you're wrong. you have *it* or you don't. John does. he's raw and captivating.
@PrestonDowMusic you kinda missed my point. i never once said that makes my opinion mean more. i was just saying that creative and outside the box doesn't necessarily mean good. i despise most of the music created on my course. and no, we dont 'learn' things on my course we're just encouraged to make music in completely different ways to anyone. my point was that i find it boring.
the fact that John is Raw and Captivating and Exciting is the reason why he is my main musical influence.
@jakeblandjk47 sorry, I was thrown off when you brought it up, and now I see what you meant, you meant that the class in experimental music was boring. I thought you meant the music of satch/vai. my bad, I totally misunderstood you. I agree with what you say about John too. He's so emotive and powerful, and that's why he's one of my main influences too.
This intro is a riff from Hendrix's song Midnight on War Heroes album.. and to say, it is hard to compare those guitarists because today exists many more different genres, in Hendrix's time there wasn't any kind of metal, techno or similar.. It was all in his head, nobody used feedback, effects as he did.. he brought a new sound to rock and more freedom to composing songs..
john is a better guitarist than hendrix just like sooo many people now a days are. and that is a fact.
But technicality takes a back seat to originality, passion, and innovation. Hendrix was so ahead of his time, and if it wasn't for him, half the guitarists of today wouldn't be around. that is why he is considered the best.
But trust me, guys like Frusciante and Vai and Satriani and Beck passed him up a while ago.
i wouldnt really say either are better than one another, because thats not what its about. its about playin for love and feeling. so just listen, love, learn
come on man, we're talking about hendrix here. even john himself says hes not someone who can be improved on. just look at him play. he was made for playing guitar.
yea they do my man. But go watch Satriani, Malmsteen, Vai, Beck, they took guitar to a much higher level technically than Hendrix.
Hendrix is a pioneer of rock though, and is the most influential guitarist of all time. But pure technicality wise, he takes a back seat.
But look at it like this. Vai is much better technically than Frusciante. I think Frusciante is a better overall guitarist though. There is a difference. Same with Hendrix, to me, Hendrix is the best guitarist to ever live.
yea dude, froosh learned all music theory and sight reading and stuff when he was a teen. By the time he joined the Chili's (18) he knew everything like the back of his hand, and was a phenominal player as well.
yeh but what about reading music? who cares if you cant, you dont need to. hendrix proves that. all u need to know is keys and notes on the fretboard. and how do u know john knows how to actually READ music? what use would that be of him?
he knows because i saw an interview with him, and he was asked about that, and they brought up Hendrix, and he said if a musician doesn't learn theory they are just lazy, and that you can certainly get through life without learning it, but it will make your life a lot easier.
He isn't calling Hendrix lazy, because he was talking about artists now-a-days. So he was calling someone like Omar Rodriguez, who is his friend, and an up and comer, but doesn't know theory, he was callin' him lazy. And Flea, but not in a mean, judgemental way, if you know what i mean. He didn't know the circumstances of Jimi's situation so he isn't the type to open his mouth and talk about that.
Anyway, no i don't got the link, but if i run across the interview again, i will link it to ya.
John was referring to learning "theory" not specifically reading music, and made a throwaway comment in a UK mag about all artists who seem to push the view you dont need theory,a s being lazy. John then wrote into the letters page the next month, apologizing as he didnt wanna give kids the wrong impression, and that if it feels right, you're on the right path, theory or not. It's an interesting read for fans of the man.
Actually I dont know what this intro has in common with funky, but it was great anyway :)
BTW, I was at RHCP in Poland and I think this intro is better.

yea well said dude. My top tier guitarists are Hendrix, followed by Froosh.
Then tier 2 is like Steve Vai, Beck, BB King, Clapton, Buddy Guy, Malmsteen, Van Halen, and soo many. And slide like Trucks and Allman.
Then tier 3 are guitarists i really like, but that aren't as good as those in tier 2. Somethin' like John Mayer, and Hillel Slovak and Omar Rodriguez.
But there is no best guitarist, it is all just preference.

tremaine2006 4 years ago
oh for sure, i'm just talkin' about technical ability. Hendrix was unreal, how ahead of his time, and how good he was.
He won't be surpassed for his inginuity, but sooooo many guitarists have passed him technically. But see, that means nothin' at all.
Jeremy1281988 4 years ago
come on. you cant say that. his fingers on that guitar move like no one elses.
tremaine2006 4 years ago
yea they do my man. But go watch Satriani, Malmsteen, Vai, Beck, they took guitar to a much higher level technically than Hendrix.

the way i see it is: vai just plays faster. he's not necessarily technically better.

Hendrix couldn't even read music. Vai Malmsteen Beck and all them are hundred times technically better.
No offense, but even a child could see that.

why would i say this stuff about my 2nd favorite guitarist, and, in my opinion, the best guitarist to ever grace the earth, if i was lying...
Jeremy1281988 4 years ago
hendrix couldnt even read music? lol i hope this is true because it makes me feel better. surely he still knew the notes on the fretboard?
tremaine2006 4 years ago
yea, i'm sure he knew scales and keys and stuff, but no, he couldn't read music.

Jeremy1281988 4 years ago
so john is basically calling hendrix lazy then? do you have a link to this interview?
tremaine2006 4 years ago
He isn't calling Hendrix lazy, because he was talking about artists now-a-days. So he was calling someone like Omar Rodriguez, who is his friend, and an up and comer, but doesn't know theory, he was callin' him lazy. And Flea, but not in a mean, judgemental way, if you know what i mean. He didn't know the circumstances of Jimi's situation so he isn't the type to open his mouth and talk about that.

Jeremy1281988 4 years ago
haha i really dont believe that...
tremaine2006 4 years ago
what part?
Jeremy1281988 4 years ago
john calling them lazy. also, why do u need to read music? what benefit is that? knowing the keys and notes on the fretboard is all u need to know.
tremaine2006 4 years ago 2
it is a pretty big help. And i think you are right, i think john was probably talkin' about newer guitarists, who are too lazy to learn music.
It does really help.
