@TheCriton normally no but in this movie the US had allowed foreign help, coalition of sorts. technically he never was joining the US army but the Japanese coalition forces.
I liked this movie, but I don't see how the mother getting off with some guy in a shack was relevent to anything. It's a great look into how vunerable the Japanese are like everyone else behind that tough cultural barrier they have.
i like how at the end the son that went to war realised the americans were wrong, and decided to fight for the freedom fighters, in the letter he wrote to his mom :)
fuck american aggression and imperialism, oil greedy, baby killing cunts
@CecilyHeron Hehe, thanks :). Kairo was remade in the U.S. as Pulse, a horror film about ghosts coming from the internet. The remake is almost as good as the scary Japanese original. Sakebi, aka Retribution, is...interesting. It was better than a couple of his previous films like Cure and Bright Future.
I only saw half of the movie and i was just captivated by the story line which depicted each character's struggle, and to finish it off the ending was just amazing and inspiring...... i would watch this again and again
I loved this film, my only criticism would have been the mom's story. What the hell? The rest of the other family members stories were really well thought out. The ending was brilliant.
I have seen it is really hard to be a Japanese man. Not only for themselves but also for their family. But i think only a country with people who have such pride and self respecting could be a successful country. Japan is a good example.
So much love missing in the big cities we live in...I'm growing tired of these movies and the false hopes of happiness and love they give us. So many lonely hearts in the cold cities we live in, and with time people are liking this kind of movie more and more, yet they are more and more individualistic and cold hearted and non human in their own lives. Especially in Japan. That's why I emigrated!! I don't like these movies.
By far one of the most engaging, brutally honest and insightful movies I have ever seen about a normal family in crisis...the film overcomes the cultural barrier to show family members dealing with their own problems and the impact this has on the family
@ReturnOfJackDawson OLDBOY Was magnificant, and also Mysteries of Murder was brillant. American film brings Rawr! to the table, too. The problem is that the country is regurgating that much BS that it's difficult to discover true film. My top movies are mostly Korean or Swedish but one American film ranking high in my mind is, One Who Flew Over the Cockoos' Nest. Respect.
This is an ominous depiction of Japan in the 1990's - their lost decade; economic collapse, failed stimulus, etc. Marriage was also in decline. But, if Japan can't recover, no one can. Hopefully, America will learn from the Japanese, with regard to social issues and movie making. Great Film.
@haypenny I'm going to go out on a limb and say that Japan's psychosocial woes (as seen in this movie) are unique, and the 'American Sonata' would deal with issues nary touched here. Also, I don't know what films you've been watching, but America has some pretty damned talented movie-makers.
i find it hard to believe u made the film Tokyo sonata because out of all the movies i watched and i have watched a lot of movies this is one of the best ive watched
Im not trying to be a troll or anything but are japanese people allowed to join the us military?

not only was this depressing, but all of the characters were irritating. i'd have to say it's one of the worst flicks i've seen in a while.

@Senseiful Why is it unrealistic? You don't think they can get over that way and move on?
