  • I feel like I just watched HEAVY METAL while smoking crack laced with hash. But in a good way I suppose.

  • 3:41 Warning from Space!

  • Is anyone absolutely confounded by the inclusion of an ELO song in a convention opening animation? I mean, I bet it was a much more popular song/band at the time, but right now it seems positively random to see all that Gainax animation matched to the beat of Electric Light Orchestra. Almost too awesome to be real.

  • Can someone tell me the name of the first song ? from 00:00 to 00 :55 ?

Ona side note : this is when people had pure nerdy dreams. Gainax =)

  • thanks for your work on sound

  • かっこいいとしか言いようがない

  • all of nerdom, please stand for our international anthem

  • ELO forever~

  • So that's what Haruko mean when she screms out DAIKON V on FLCL

  • Also: This is like the baddest thing I've ever seen.

  • Woah, Captain America, Batman, Robin, Spider-Man, Superman and Wonder Woman at 4:05-4:09. Crazy.

  • @EponymousKid Not really... this was an opening video for a convention... and not just an anime convention, but an all-around fan convention... there are references in this video to anime, Godzilla movies, science fiction movies (mostly American), American comic books, science fiction and fantasy novels (many that are American) and wargaming. This video is awesome for everyone.

  • Can't believe nobody else saw that she blew up the Enterprise and a MASER Tank before the Yamato.

  • なんだこの膨大な英語のコメント数は

  • Is it ok that I got a huge nosebleed from watching this? No joke. My desk and keyboard are now all messed up because all of sudden this huge stream of raw nerd DNA came flushing out of my nose. The weirdest part, however, is that my cat then walked in and started licking the damn blood drippings from the ground.

What do I make of it? This is the effect that Gainax have on you and your pets.

  • So, basically, in Daicon III, she reduced the Earth to rubble, and now in Daicon IV she's repairing her own mistake?

    Sweet.

  • Wow! Japan was LIGHT YEARS ahead of America in terms of animation in the 80s!

    (probably still is!)

  • The animation in this is fantastic, especially considering it's from the early 80s and by an amateur group of animators. Then again, since they went on to become Gainax, it's not that surprising!

  • Youtube has had much higher quality for a while now, are you ever going to upload the less compressed version like you mention in the description?

  • This is the single greatest piece of animation ever created. Thank you for putting on the time and effort to bring this to us. Keep the dream alive.

  • Why is this so Awesome!

  • The fact that this exists gives me hope for the world.

  • 電話男のOPはDAIKON FILMのメンバーだった人たちの一部がGAINAX脱退後立ち上げたGONZOという制作会社でこのDAIKON4をパロって作ったんですよね。

  • how did they animate this. it just doesnt make sense.

  • @colt45joe traditional cell animation and a lot of hard work. This was originally and 8mm film shown at a 1983 convention in Japan.

  • 1st AMV ever.and hard to top.

  • This is the coolest thing I've ever seen. I think I've...yeah, I just had an orgasm. That's how cool this was.

  • At least she has some chub to her! I prefer a big of chub than being a beanpole ^^

  • Ahh...The old days of missile trials everywhere!! Old anime was where it was at!

  • ……悪い意味で商業主義に毒されていなかった時代のファンジンの傑作ですねぇ。

  • I don'r know WTF just happened...but I like it :D

  • 懐かしすぎる 当時あの会場に居た人たちの面々を思い出す。

  • @CNetherny I don't see the problem. It's an awesome piece of 80s hand-drawn animation set to a rockin' song and featuring a character from pretty much every sci-fi or comic franchise EVAR. You don't need to be baked to enjoy something with this much win. Do you even know the story behind it?

  • What a waste of time..... POSEUR!

  • Gundam? Star Wars? American Comics?

This is insanely awesome... how did I NOT know of this?

  • @Azimel66 I only just discovered this myself and I feel the same way. You get goosebumps when they scroll past the 1000 characters cuz you know they earned their paycheck 30 seconds ago but it was for the pure love of scifi.

  • クオリティ高いな。

  • Woah...this video could very well be a compilation of everything I find awesome in the universe. ELO? Star Wars? Anime? Sexy girls? Nerdgasm doesn't really cover it.

  • I spotted Lum, Lupin, Goku, A Dalek, and a bunch of people in the big crowd scene.

  • This looks so much better than today's moeblob shit anime that it's not even funny, it's just depressing!

  • It's either real or it's a dream there's nothing there that's in between. TWILIIIIIIGHT~

  • interesting

  • Pretty good footage with fitting music.

  • 月刊OUTに寄稿されていた、原子炉日直当番の話、ウランをバケツで運んで撹拌棒でグールグル話をもう一度読み返したい気がする。

  • ダイコンフィルム買ったよん

  • where can I watch DAICON IV ?

  • It's like Instrumentality in reverse.

  • Haruka from FLCL saying she's Daicon V in episode 5 makes a lot more sense now XD

  • Why does this make me think there're endless possibilities to explore in anime genres?

  • this explains GAINAX's awsumness & WTF moment in the present.

  • @hikari2905 well considering they were responsible for Evangelion, Fooly Cooly, and Gunbuster, I'd say I agree with you.

  • Wow! Just by accident found out what the opening music is!

I don't mean ELO's "Prologue" into "Twilight" - I mean the music that plays BEFORE that for the first full minute of this complete video.

It's Kitaro's "Noah's Ark" from the Album "Silver Cloud". I was looking up some Kitaro music on Grooveshark and heard "Noah's Ark" and instantly recognized it! Thought you'd like to know. ^_^

(Incidentally, Kitaro has done ONE single anime soundtrack ever. The OST for the Queen Millenia movie.)

  • wat

  • the rocks .... my goodness,the rocks ( T o T )...beautiful <3

  • Goddamn this song.

    Blew my mind.

  • no me canso de ver este corto

  • amazing

  • @michitsuka

"It's rare for amateur quality movies to surpass professional's. That "seed" ("タネ"...?) suddenly plays a song which is truly, and surprisingly, nostalgic. We used to have a real-time correlation (of?) that was of no charge. Now, however, the 'copyright wall' is difficult to climb. I take these things as a mixed blessing.

Overtime, exodus(?) is here and that, for me, is happiness."

My Japanese isn't good, but I think that's close to what he put... Maybe?

  • This must have been absolutely jawdropping during it's time. Amazing how well developted the japanese were with animation even this early.

  • Twilight in the video is in a higher pitch than the version I'm used to hearing. It sounds much more uplifting, and there's no denying that the animation is jaw-droppingly awesome!

  • how to make your own mothership

    1.) find a laying raddish

    2.)pour water on it

    3.)???????

    4.) PROFIT!!!!!!!

  • @dlwk1988 3. COURAGE! With a couragous heart anything is possible.

  • @Citrakite

you know,i just watch nisemonogatari the other day and your comment just reminde me about that show

  • @dlwk1988 as it's from Gaogaigar I'm not sure if I should be sad or not.

  • @Citrakite

lol dont be its just that i dont watch much from the brave or sunrise series and most of the time i watched its translated to my native language. its just so happen that the anime i mentioned is very identical to those quotes

  • @dlwk1988 That's not a raddish, that's a parsnip! :P

  • @RaneDuPre

lol really the only thing pop in my mind that time was that

  • ダイナロボがアニメになったの初めて見た。

  • Man Gainax wasn't even a thing back then and now it's got the best IPs and animation in the biz.

  • SHE went though Darth Vader and Optimus Prime like butter, better run guys!!! Well she is ginger!!

  • @hitmanhornster Not only that, but she survived the Macross as well!!

  • this is what its all about

  • i am so happy to be able to watch this, i read about it like 15 years ago... =)

  • 3:28 and bare witness to the first real 'gainax-bounce'

  • she killed us all O_O

  • 5:17

The robot on the right is from Silent Running I think.

  • Most amazing thing on Youtube.

  • The animation itself it pretty epic, but ELO is just icing on the cake.

Can't go wrong with such a great musical choice.

  • @TextheBored Its the Otaku Anthem essentially. This video was the second thing that Gainax as we know it today animated.

  • -The Gainax girl kicking Zeon MS (especially the Red Comet) ass?

-The same girl fighting Darth Vader?

-A hybrid of a Gundam and Variable Fighter with the Arcadia, SDF-1, and Yamato in the background?

-Two Doraemon(?) characters cosplaying as Britai Kridanik and Char Aznable?

This must of been a really exciting experience for those who've watched it back in '83. Today, it's still exciting (for those who can recognize the references, of course).

  • Back in the days when S-VHS, and Laserdisc was King!

1980's Japanese animation will always be EPIC!!!!

What GAINAX did was groundbreaking, and brilliant!!

I am very happy that I was a child of the 80's, what great memories!!

  • I CAN NOT REMEMBER WITNESSING ANYTHING MORE EPIC/RANDOM/FANTASTIC THAN THIS

    EVER

  • 電車男の元ネタこれか。すげーなGAINAX.

  • the animation is amazing

  • I DONT GET IT!!!!

  • OMG She rides on the Stormbringer!

  • I'm having Major Flashbacks! This blew me away when I saw it sooo many years ago

  • Si vedono i miglioramenti in due anni. XD

  • Simply beautiful.

  • My mind has just been raped by the epic randomness of this video.

  • wow old 80's anime wat good memores!!

  • 4:38 The definitive loss of the innocence by the humankind.

    5:01 The rebirth.

  • Σ:)<CLEARMUSIC and BPM fix gooooood!

  • What was this all about was it like an intro video for an anime convention? I heard they got in trouble with copyright for using the electric orchestra music

  • @MysterySparkStudios Yes it was a video created for the opening of the Oosaka Science Fiction Covention (forget the full title). If you take the first character in Oosaka 大 it's can be pronounced Dai... and if you add that to Con from Convention you get Daicon 大根 which means radish, which is why the video has a radish motif to the space ship.

I don't think they got in trouble but Gainax can't really re-release it now that they are pro company cause of all the copyright characters in it.

  • @PetiteOzma ok thanks for clearing that up! Im going to look out for that radish

  • And the Densha Otoko TV series' opening credits is based on this as well. A couple of the guys that worked on it were part of the Daicon IV animation team.

  • how dare people compare this much awesome to that sparkling vampire and his emo girl

  • This is the greatest parade of nerd culture known to mankind. Seriously awesome stuff.

  • is this what Furi Kuri is based on???

  • @part2themovie No... this was just one of the many, many, many, many things that were referenced by FLCL. Of course the Daicon vids and FLCL were both made by the GAINAX guys... as they are awesome.

  • @part2themovie Not only is FLCL based on this, it is one part parody, and one part extension. Also, FLCL was made by the same people who made this and they even call attention to that in episode 5, Buri-Bure (Brittle Bullet), when Haruko is in the red bunny-suit riding the guitar she yells, "DAICON 5!"

  • @Gemanite55 thanks thats cool to know

  • Such a good thing.... I'm at peace right now Thumbs up!

  • Did she just fight Darth Vader

DID SHE JUST FIGHT DARTH VADER

  • @ax10m4

Don't worry, the scene was probably right after the third movie.

  • @FrauleinFive Well...seeing how Daicon IV was made in 1983....

  • Ok, why is she wearing a fucking playboy costume?

  • Finally, a Twilight that *doesn't* suck!

  • @amadeusyaoi Goddamn, the fact that you say "finally" when this is the original...

  • @GabeMorris I know this came out before it... what am I, Chomsky?

  • Twiiiiiiiilllllliiiiiight

  • gunbuster diebuster GURREN LAGANN!!!!!!!!!! tanks gainax

  • As a fan of anime and ELO I have always loved this video. Thanks for posting, my kids just saw it and they loved it.

  • Gainax: kicking ass since the 80s years, and will continue kicking ass for many more years.

  • Gainax put hair on my chest.

  • Kudos for the accomplished work. Excellent job!

  • Always nice to relive the moment when Gainax discovered Godmode.

  • i'm so happy that Gainax used the Electric Light Orchestra's song called Twilight

    it's fit great! :D

  • 5:17 - Taiyo Sentai SunVulcan!

  • That was totally freaking awesome times infinity while stomping the the pi equation.

  • Even after 20 odd years this still surpasses the majority of stuff that came after it.

I love that. If that's not inspiration for any up and coming animator then I don't know what is!

  • I just saw Daicon 3 and IV at a panel at AB '10 where they described this as the work of some random fanboys working in their basement. I remember thinking that based on the style these guys probably ended up getting hired by Gainax. Then I saw the girl surfing the sword at 3:37 and knew it couldn't be a coincidence. They said these guys ended up forming Gainax themselves.

Hats off, cause I know I coudln't make that in my basement.

  • Best Animation ever made. RESPECT.

  • Anyway this was AWESOMEEEE.

  • I watched all of Star Wars only last Thanksgiving...

I think the thing is, if you sit down and watch a classic with the intention of enjoying it, it can be totally awesome... as Star Wars was.

It's easy to like current things because there's still a lot of hype around them, so you can enjoy them even if they aren't perfect. But if you were to watch something with the intention of laughing at it, of course it's generally hilarious...

As Star Wars could have been, or as current films could be.

  • just think in 1-20 year's time, 90 percent of these cultural references will be meaningless (if they aren't already...)

  • They are. Kids of today are guessing that Luke Skywalker was the first to step on the moon, and the like.

And why should they care about "old stupid movies with bad graphics" when they have better hollywood bullshit fed to them all the time?

  • What makes it better? It certainly is not the writing.

  • Sorry, I forgot to put it this way; "better".

    Meaning, hollywood is shit.

  • It is a message from another time.

  • sad, isnt it.

  • @opmandrake

Maybe, but I'm off the opinion that Cultural Refs are never meaningless, just...forgotten and obsolete.

  • Don't worry, as long as Hollywood keep remaking and destroying those things no one will forget them.

  • @opmandrake I dunno, of course a lot of the minor references will be lost, but the quality of things such as the original Star Wars will probably be recognized for as long as society is maintained, at least to cultured individuals.

  • ooo a giant hairy white dildo

  • Reminds of Lupin. Surprised they were allowed to use all those copyrighted characters.

  • Actually, since this wasn't made for sale, there's no proper copyright infringement.

But nowadays, I'm not sure they would let something like this to happen.

  • No, they weren't, that's why LD is worth +1,500$, BETAMAX tape is also something like this (since it's limited bootleg...). When Daicon Videos made big with Royal Space Force and partially moved to USA they showed Playboy what they made but americans didn't share the enthusiasm so they didn't even ask Jeff Lynn (of Electric Light Orchestra, from who they took "Indrodution" and "Twilight" song from "Time" Lp for the music in the animation) and Daicon "died" in drawers along other early works.

  • Thank you very much for the upload sir...I wouldn't have known about this event if you hadn't done so!

    We the fans salute you!

  • Wasn't that chick from Fooly Cooly wearing the EXACT same bunny costume on the last episode.

  • Yes, Haruhara Haruko did wear playboy bunny outfit, thus FLCL is based upon manga - they just did hail to thier own works in the animation. Just like in Tengen Toppa Gurren Laggan episode with onsen (might be wrong, 6th or 7th ep.) where the staff is just most known female characters from Gainax studios

  • This song...never fails to cheer me up.

    Never.

    :3

  • Shit... This was all hand drawn?

  • @anon4234 It certainly was! Remember, the time was a bit before desktop computers became powerful enough to do the job, so animation up till this point had to be done by hand. Cool, eh?

  • Yeah, especially considering how the animation looks so much better than a lot of the stuff that's coming out right now even with all the advances in technology. It's really amazing how a bunch of amateurs could pull off something so high quality on such a tight budget.

  • I've never seen a commercial video with so many cross-overs before.

I wonder how the rights issues were handled?

  • That's what I call overdoing. They ask them to make the intro for the Daicon, they go and make what is possibly the most epic piece of animation ever. Goddamn japanese.

  • I like the fact that the bunny girl was just innocently going around and fighting. She wasn't trying to be some sexpot, she was just a cute girl in a bunny costume flying around, nothing kinky.

  • Hot Damn, now if that isn't an opening video, I don't know what is. That song plaing through the Daicon IV Opening was pretty neat, too.

  • What is the name of the kitaro song at the begining?

  • @animemaniac56 , Noah's Ark

  • Comment removed

  • This is just Gainax shouting to the world: "Hey, this is us, this is how much we kick ass"

  • @Forzatoadv

And much ass was kicked on that day.

  • This is such a great video. I wish there was a Daicon V video.

  • This video proves the old adage: it's been to ask for forgiveness than permission.

  • The Japanese are good at drawing things BLOWING UP lol. I bet Akira took some ideas from Daicon.

  • I find it a bit strange that the album version of Twilight (and the one used in the opening for Densha Otoko) is in C major while the Daicon IV one is in C# major, but yet, there's no perceivable tempo difference.

  • The pitch was probably changed slightly

  • Why would they go through the trouble back then? They couldn't just run it throught Audacity or Autotune in the early '80s.

  • nice work with the remastering!

  • Daicon IV owns the Twilight books HANDS DOWN

  • @Robin4ever1970 Twilight books...? Did I miss something, or are you just on a high after watching the video? :P

  • @QwoPhasaArius

haha oh no you didnt miss anything

just a little, over-rated, stupid, unoriginal Vampire trilogy of books :P
