  • how do you do autofocus?

  • Its only slow because your in video mode and using live view, otherwise its as fast as your glass.

  • Great video, I find it ideal for my needs really... I too had difficulty finding the autofocus button...

To answer your question chaps it's the ' * ' button above the directional pad on the upper right hand side on the body.

    Hope that helps.

  • How to set the canon EOS 500d to anutofocus?? Anyone???? Help :)

  • @eloscisoorhands yeah somebody help, we're two people stuck here... D:

  • can u please help me, how do i set the camera to autofocus when filming! i cant manage to do that

  • Why would you even use af on a vid?

  • That camera just isn't using TTL-CT-SIR in video mode. It's only doing some random focusing with the information from CMOS sensor.

  • The Auto focus depend on the lense not the camera !!!!

  • @shity8 incorrect

  • what framerate can you get using 720p?

  • @BitchesAndHose 30fps

  • when im filming with my canon EOS 500D i cant use the videos in windows movie maker.. whys that? : /

  • Hey which editing program do you use, and which HD converter do you use? (:

  • The reason you have that noise is because your using auto focus. Just use manual it's better for video anyways.

  • @BryanComedyTV I would just use manual focus.

  • @BryanComedyTV It is the lens. Doesnt matter what lens you use... the mic on the camera body will pick up the sound b/c the mic is so close to the lens. This is usually the problem with digital camera shooting video/audio. On this video...sound of auto focus is actually pretty quiet compared to EF-S 18-55mm kit lens that T1I/500D comes with.

  • what the hell. Video cameras' auto focus is dead silent. Why can't dslrs have silent autofocus.

I want to kill whoever made these lenses.

Nononononoo, I want to kill whoever decided to make video cameras with small sensors and not let them work with prime lenses. If video cameras worked with prime lenses, then so many video makers wouldn't have to switch to DSLRs, which just aren't made for video making. Gaaaaah...

  • joke

  • All for Apple I see ;].

  • You got some high-tech stuffs. :O Anyway i prefer manual focusing. A little difficult, but i think its better than autofocus. Im planning to buy an EOS 500D in the next year. Did you have any problems with this machine? Will i able to use with older objectives, like pentacon 135 (m42)?

  • I was wondering about that noise... Is it really the cam/lense? I use the Panasonic Lumix FZ38 but I am thinking 'bout getting a real DSLR - either Nikon D5000 or Canon EOS 500D. Now I am not so sure anymore... Well, and the Lumix GH1 (my first choice) is soooo expensive. So can it be this noise is caused by the settings?

    Anyway: Very interesting video!!

  • good question. I never bothered to distinguish the source of the noise. but this was shot using my finest lens already (24-70 L) so I guess this is probably as quiet as one gets on this camera. the focusing is slow, you wouldn't want to use it anyway even if it is quiet. go for manual focusing. see my other videos shot using EOS 7D. they were all manually focused.

  • Fantastic conversion quality for YouTube. What software was used? Thanx.

  • i used elgato's turbo.264 hd

  • "due to 500d's ergonomic design and the lack of a electronic viewfinder (which you can find on a panasonic gh-1), manual focusing is just not possible without resulting in handshakes while one uses one hand to control the focus ring on the lens with the other handing the camera. the video mode of this camera is just not meant for home movie shooting."

I can shoot with manual focus no problems, very comfortably & smoothly actually....

  • Or you can just get a Panasonic GH1. You seem to be in a self-inflicted dilemma because you don't consider anything but Canon.

  • actually i am not in any dilemma cause this is just a camera i borrowed to have a little bit of fun. i agreed with you totally gh-1 is the small-sized camera with interchangeable lens to go that also double up as a video taking camera. but i think it is still too early for me to get into a camera with changeable lens take takes video. gh-1 is great in implementation but its cmos is still 50% smaller than that of a full frame 35mm cmos.

  • so, all things being equal, its depth of field will always be longer. with the investments i have already made in canon's l lenses, it makes more sense for me to wait for their next generation of dslr. who knows, maybe canon will copy panasonic to make a camera with changeable lens that take hd video too.

  • or if panasonic drops the price of gh-1 to more reasonable range before my next vacation, i will jump on a gh-1. i think it is perfect for vacation. meantime, i am perfectly happy with taking 720p video with my panasonic ts-1 and 1080p video with my canon hf11.

  • @rodkar Do you think the canon 550 d would be smoother?
