My mom worked there as a hostess in the Mexican Pavillion for both years. She always showed me her pics and that awoke my interest in the fair. This project of yours is very interesting, and it shows a great deal of work involved, good job!
The economy must have been through the roof during that time. Can you imagine spending so much money for only a two year seasonal project? I was there when I was 13 and 14 and I rememember how exciting it was. There was so much to see and do, I was a kid in a huge candy store. It was amazing. It was so big, it crossed over the highway. I wish our economy will get back to this "can do" feeling once more. Thanks for reminding me of those happy times.
Great Video. There is still a lot of evidence of the fair to be seen. There is the time capsule, a marker for the Vatican pavilion and several statues. The Fountain of the Planets, although defunct, the name can be seen in the granite if you clear the mud off it. If you go to the Unisphere during the US Open the fountains are running (only directly below Unisphere). This gives you a sense of the way it was originally conceived; to appear to be floating. The main entrance is also original.
Maybe I should tell you all I did a video, taking a camera to Flushing Meadow Park, and trying to find what is and isn't there. It's in two parts on my channel.
Just wonderful. I look forward to your future work. I was privileged to visit this fair as a young child and I still remember so much of my experience on that magical day. This fair is worth remembering and I'm so glad you are helping that happen for us all.
I know my mother inlaw has lots of pictures, it's just a matter of locating them, I would have to scan them for you as well, she won't let me send the originals.
It's truly ashame that NYC is letting what is left rot away instead of preserving it for future generations. I wish I was alive to experience this wonderful fair.
But then again, when you think of it.. Walt really ran with the idea, look at EPCOT, it's not exactly the same, but pretty damn close.
This project is a massive undertaking to essentially create a virtual reality recreation of the whole fair. If you were there and have photos, sound files, etc., forward copies. Contact Dr. Lori Walters of University of Central Florida. The website is virtualheritage dot ist dot ucf dot edu
Many thanks for the posting. Yes - we are always seeking photos, brochures, home movies, etc. We can scan any of your items and return the originals and provide digital copies. Our contact information can be found at the end of our video. Thank you.
I wish I was alive to see this. Every time I go to Flushing Meadow Park I think of what it once was, the families and childhood memories that were spent in that very place. It's a truly profound place and rich in history.
This is the America I thought I we were going to inherit. But we were fooled by the Great Socity. GM / Ford are just shelled of what that once were. I wen to the Fair for one day with my 6 brother and three sisters. Coming from the worste part of Newark N.J.. I truly was in the land of OZ. I was so pround of the great American companies. Thank you so much for putting it on. Loved it
I was a child living in Astira, Queens in 1964. We watched the Sinclair dinodaurs come up the East River on barges. Then we movied to Flushing a month before the fair opened. We walked there on opening day. I shook hands with Walt Disney!
Fantastic! It's great to see a reinterpretation of the pavilions, particularly for those of us who have seen most of the historical photos and video already.
You don't know how much I appreciate your effort. As a kid of 12 I didn't see enough, but I think of it ALL THE TIME. Thank You!!!

What a great production. I was at the fair also (in the summer of 1965). You captured it well.

This was a beautiful video of a type that probably would not have been conceived at the time of the fair. By the way, I was to the fair.

wow, this is fantastic, I have tons of negative from when my Grandmother took me there. I was 4 years old and got to go twice!
What format would you like this material? Hard or soft copies and where do I send it?
