Once they get you to doubt common science, they can tell you whatever they like. If you invest all authority in an old collection of middle-eastern writings, what authority does it leave for you to speak about lying, society, etc? If it's the authority, let the book speak for itself. We've all had a chance to read it. If you take it seriously, I doubt there is much more rational discussion that can ensue.

Good question. I think a loving life is a good way to live because in my experience, it does right by those around me. When I was younger, I took morals from my parents, from the Bible, from the media etc. Nowadays, I use reason and empathy grounded in our common humanity. Having taught moral philosophy for 6 years, I have to say, the last place I'd look = ancient monotheistic texts. I do quite like Fletcher's approach to Christian ethics, though I'm more interested in MacIntyre's Virtue Ethics.

If you claim that ones moral depends on the parental figure establishing what is morally right, then if Dahmer's parents taught him the morals in which he practiced then he would be justified in his actions.
