Thats funny.. There is no such thing as atheists. Funny how so called "atheists" go around and spend so much time trying to prove there is not God. I don't know of anybody going around trying to prove there is no santa clause. YOu just don't want to submit to his authority, but you will eventually.
The delusion of a gods and goddess is shared among most of the population of the world. Most people, excluding some small children, don't believe in Santa clause. You deity has no authority, because your deity is highly unlikely to exist. Your deity rest beside the other deities, around 286,000 of them. I'm going to guess you are Christian? You honestly think because more people believe in your god, it's more likely, without evidence?
Abiogenesis has proven how life began. Evolution proved how life evolves. Physics, Astronomy, Atomic theory present more evidence for how the universe began than your bronze age desert scribbling. Science produces results, theology is a history of non achievement. You are without excuse, because science is something that is taught in public schools.
Don't you mean you can't debate science because you are a scientific illiterate? I do have moral standards, they just aren't yours. I believe women are equal to men, your bible teaches women aren't to speak in church, teach, or hold authority over a men. The new Testament does nothing to change this fact as found in the Old Testament. There is a good chance you believe as I do, but you aren't getting this moral about equality between men and women from Bible scripture.
Well, Its all a mater of authority. By what authority can you make such claims? The authority of science? I don't know if you knew this but modern science has only been around since the 17th century. So you base your authority on 350-400 years of research vs 6000 years of biblical history? Hardly comparable . By the authority of the bible, I can conclude that you are a liar and therefore are not morally reliable. God said that he makes himself know to all by creation.. So who am I to believe.
Actually, its a matter of evidence, not a matter of bronze age desert scribblings of questionable origins. The bible is hardly a source of history, it even contradicts itself so often it's embarrassing. I can conclude you are scientfic illiterate, who wants nothing to do with a debate on a subject even a high school student knows. Good idea. If you get your morals from the bible, you must be angry you can't publically murder homosexuals, feminists, atheists like yours truly aren't you?
If it's a matter of how long things have been around. I think we can discard gravity as the reason why we're standing on the ground in favor of the flat earth theory which has been around for far much longer, we can all agree...
As for gods, Egyptian mythology is probably the best guess then since it far outdates and has been around much longer than the bible ever has...
Once they get you to doubt common science, they can tell you whatever they like. If you invest all authority in an old collection of middle-eastern writings, what authority does it leave for you to speak about lying, society, etc? If it's the authority, let the book speak for itself. We've all had a chance to read it. If you take it seriously, I doubt there is much more rational discussion that can ensue.
You are the minority. Do you not realize that over 35 billion of the entirety of mankind from the beginning of history have believed in a creator? You want to try and convince me otherwise? Your a defiant hardhead, who should not talk at all. Your ignorance is obvious to everyone except for this little group of people whom know the truth but not wanting to submit to Gods authority deny what is plain to them. You do realize that you are the minority?
I can probably guess how you life runs as well.. You probably have tribulation after tribulation, always something going wrong, never anything going right with the exception of the bottle that brings you joy. If there is no God then there is no afterlife, then what do you live for? 80 years of struggles just to be covered by dirt and forgot about? What a pathetic life you live. Why even bother. And to have children and put them through the same struggle? Do us all a favor and don't reproduce.
What a horrible response. Seriously. You don't know anything about my life. Actually I love life, and I live a loving life. Life rules. I don't have such a depressing view of life that I think it would only be worthwhile if there's another realm to go to afterwards. Living for an afterlife seems much more pathetic to me. There's a world right here and now that offers opportunities and challenges that seem much more relevant and meaningful to me.
Of those 35 billion, how many were aware of alternatives to mythology?
Besides, you've rather missed the point. My argument was not with belief in a creator, (which I don't find convincing, but I wouldn't call irrational.) I was taking issue with belief in your submission to a particular collection of religious writings. As for your comments about being 'hardheaded', I can but chuckle. Your theory that non-believers are in denial is rather cocky. You need to get out more. U don't even know me.
I don't need to know you CharlieBoy.. I know what the bible says. Let me ask you something, when you say you live a loving life what makes you think a loving life is the way to live? Where did you get your morals? From your parents? From the Law? What makes good good and bad bad?
Good question. I think a loving life is a good way to live because in my experience, it does right by those around me. When I was younger, I took morals from my parents, from the Bible, from the media etc. Nowadays, I use reason and empathy grounded in our common humanity. Having taught moral philosophy for 6 years, I have to say, the last place I'd look = ancient monotheistic texts. I do quite like Fletcher's approach to Christian ethics, though I'm more interested in MacIntyre's Virtue Ethics.
My point being that God said he wrote his laws on our hearts. By you own admission, You have demonstrated "common humanity" as a clear demonstration the overall attribute of God.. If you claim that ones moral depends on the parental figure establishing what is morally right, then if Dahmer's parents taught him the morals in which he practiced then he would be justified in his actions.
cont.. Now if the written law established the moral plumb line then the actions of Hitler and Stalin would justified for they were the Law. So where does our moral originate? I'll tell you where. It was placed in you, in your soul, in your spirit by the creator Himself. He established the code of morality and "common humanity" long before you came along. Bottom line is, you conscience tells you what is good or bad and it lines up with Gods laws verbatim.
I think its funny that most people who deny God try to live a life that is synonymous with the Ten Commandments. They know its not "morally" right to lie. They know they shouldn't lust after their buddy's wife. They know they shouldn't steal. You refute God yet you try to live by the standard he established 5000 years ago. This is hilarious to me.
My point exactly. Not only secs of religion, but humans as a whole. Like I have stated before, God has written His laws on the hearts of men, hence a moral conscience.
The only reason humans have morals is because if we didn't, society wouldn't last. That kind of knowledge was known long before any of today's religion, including Christianity. By that rationale, it means that even if there is a God, its definitely not the Christian God, and the Ten Commandments are void.
Oh ok, the Ten Commandments are void but the Ten commandments are the standard of morality for the whole world. Not just for Christians but for everyone. Listen Kiddo, Just because you say it aint so doesn't mean Jack. You want to argue against 6000 years of documented Christian History,? just because you don't understand? And who put these morals in place? God did. Not your parents, not the law, only God.
Umm, there were religions long before Christianity that had the same morals. "Just because you say it ain't so doesn't mean Jack" that's pretty funny coming from some religious kook who is obviously too high on his pedestal and thinks all the world follows the Christian Ten Commandments.
These morals weren't put here by any God. Our ancestors did, and then created their own gods to help get around what they couldn't understand. Then, other religions, Christianity included, assimilated ancient beliefs and condemned anything they didn't like. Christianity is nothing more than the combination of assimilated beliefs from previous religions, and a way for tyrants to push their own agendas.
I don`t live my life based on the ten commandments. I don`t read the Bible and I don`t listen to any religion. Does that mean I am not moral? Remember I haven`t stated what moral code I base myself on. I just say what moral code I don`t base myself on. So no one can assume my morality, what I see as right or wrong. So what am I. an imoral human being, or a moral one?
Morality doesn't 'possess' anything. However; a simple standard can certainly be objective, such as 'my rights end where your's begin, and vice versa'.
You say that like a claim is necessarily wrong. I assert that this is the basis for a consistent morality. More than that will require diligent mental effort, applied on a case-by-case basis. There are no easy answers. I can only offer a good place to start.
1. God didn't establish the standard. If that were the case, then you would suggest that Moses and his contemporaries, before receiving the ten commandments, believed that murder, rape, theft, etc, were OK. Fail.
Societies require certain social niceties to function - a consensus not to murder and so on. Human societies functioned perfectly well for millenia before Moses got lost in a relatively small desert ergo human societies possesed a 'morality' without a paternal deity.
The argument from morality is too easily debunked. Other animals also have a degree of morality and social teamwork present as a survival mechanism- such as meerkats and wolves. I think you could be safe to say that Humans lost morality after they invented their imaginary Gods- just look at history. Epic Fail for the creationists.
Heb 9:27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:
Romans 1:20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:
quoting the bible is just silly when people are trying to have a legitimate debate.
I once wrote on a piece of paper that I am God, and that you are going to hell for saying something so goddamn stupid. You best be scared, it's a holy document because it says it is my word and it proclaims me as god, thus, I am infallible!

Morality is that which allows us to function as social animals.

So can you claim that they posses objectivity? So long as they are a funtional phenomenon, their utility makes them subjective.
