I Remeber my Parents Takingmy Brother Ron and i to Chippawa lake when we were kids.I rode every Ride there. It's a Shame its all gone. But i will always have ny nenories.
My Mom and Aunt used to go as kids... we had a cottage out the on the lake until 2005 when my great grandpa passed, I never got to see the park when it was open but we went on a tour of the park in 09 and I could feel the people of the past having fun and being happy the place is so sad now though.
I like how they used video and photos from the old days, mixed with scenes of the decaying park. It almost feels like the fall of human civilization...
@Strafe1995 It's called "Let's Goto the Time When Everything Was Beautiful" by the group Clandestiny; it's on their album 'The Introspective Year', available on iTunes. Great song, and I love this video.
Great Great Documentary about Chippewa! I don't even live close (I live in Colorado) but as an engineer I respect the past designs especially old ones and this inspires me to continue my upcoming career as a roller coaster engineer. I think Fred Pearce had originally designed the dipper but I could be wrong...hmmm Either way, thank you for sharing this wonderful footage.
theres a legend of a Ghost of a lil Girl haunts the park, it said she died i nthe 1920s. she wa skilled on a swing ride. she can appear as a girl in a white dress or a girl inwho is bloodied
That was really really well done, I had never heard of that park until I watched this. It looks like it was pretty cool in it's hayday. I have to go rent that closed for the season movie now. Great work
@BMWM3GTRLOVER I've tried that too, having a deja vu from a dream. Mine was about an abandoned watertower standing in the middle of nowhere out on the country side. I had the dream for years, and I always hated the tower in my dreams because it caused me sorrow of some reason. Then one day, at age 12, my parents, sister and i was out driving. We drove for hours, and all of a sudden, we passed the exact same watertower that I had seen so many times in my dreams at night.
wow, amazing documentary. Nicely put ah, that..that....THEN and NOW...its freaking freaky. and yes, I have to agree....the girl broadcasting this video has great legs :-). here in South Beach we get no Amusements parks AT ALL! zero, nothing, nada. and I love them. Orlando is 4 hours away but....4 hours are 4 hours. So I assume this park is cleared by now, rght? Whatever they build there, we will all know it by the "CHIPPEWA Abandned Amusement park....." BOOOHH damn it
Thank you so much for your documentary. I grew up only a few miles from this park. Our parents would take a car load of us kids and drop us off at the end of the road and we would walk back the drive to get in. Then they would pick us up later that night. We had so much fun there. Looking at the footage of the rides, the way they used to be, sure brings back fond memories. Too bad about the ballroom burning down. It was a great place for concerts. Thanks again!
@sintony69 No, there was no accident, at least not that I ever heard of. LOL I think it was more because people quit going there. At that time Geauga Lake was a pretty big amusement park and Cedar Point was also pretty big. Neither one of them was too far from there. Cedar point was only a 2 hour drive and Geauga Lake was less than an hour. Chippewa Lake couldn't compete. It was small and had no room to grow. It was a sad thing to see it deteriorate so badly.
its too bad the city would let such a historic amusement park go to waste like that, theres a few restorable sections, the riverbost can be salvaged, the coaster isnt all that bad, of course you'd have to rebuild it board by board but at lest most of its intact as a blueprint to work by, the ferris wheel is pretty much salvagable, i'd like to see if any of the original bumping cars are still there.
hmmm... was browsing abandoned amusement parks and came upon this one... like it... weirdest part... i know brenna lee roth. creepy. hi brenna lee roth.
I love that you had pictures and clips of before when it was up and running and full of life. Really makes the after picture that much more intriguing.
@kamperlight Lack of interest, low guest count. Six Flags came in and pretty much wiped out this little ma & pa amusement park. It's a shame, really, because I heard these smaller, local owned parks were better than the sparkle and glitter of places like Six Flags.
I live 4 miles from here,I hopped the fence once or twice to explore with friends in my day when it was still up and decaying.I remember the ballroom going upin flames too a few years later, took all day to out it out and the smoke was visible for miles.

Great job on making this video with your commentary.
The documentary about the park was great, well done..I enjoyed the past and present scenes. Didn't like the movie clips however...it's a bit overused, the theme or variation of it about some 'girl that wakes up in an abandoned creepy amusement park and doesn't know hoiw she got there and there's no way out'...
It wud b cool 2 go there now i wud like climb up the roller coaster...... Hopefully it wouldnt break tho :v/ btw that movie looks friggin pitiful but good video
@nolldavis Apparently 1978 was the year Six Flags began to sprawl out over the US and people were more attracted to places that had cartoon characters walking around amongst the guests than old-fashioned Maw-and-Paw-Parks. My uncle worked at Chippewa Lake Park in the mid 1970s, and swears some of the rides are still standing today, but have been moved. 5:41 is such a testimony to steel girders in fire. In this case, only the heat of wood burning. When holding a load (the roof), it was the weight that eventually buckled their support and warped them into noodles. The reason I bring this up is there are people today still hellbent on the WTC being impossible to buckle due to the heat of plain building fire. I've been to this site in 2003 in person, the girders were amazingly noodled.
@knightro0216 I dont know i think it fit the whole theme of the project combining how things looked and were done back " Then" compared to how things look and are done "Now".it reminds me of News people from the 80s
We have the largest single organisation owning the largest parks and other entertainment business`s called Tussauds Group Plc then there is large independeants worth hundred of millions of ££££ Blackpool resort and Oakwood park in Wales then Drayton manor all the largest parks in Britain smaller ones are owned as subsideries. basicallyevery one ones some-one Lol when times are hard they`ll close the small local parks first
but Scrap value to lease holder being in several million dollers the rides are working order and can give a small fiancial yield or operating profit till a time they are actually scrapped! they cannot loose either way!!
Six Flags is third Largest Park in the World ($2.1Bn) then second is Tussauds Group $2.98Bn then Disney at top $5Bn approx largest theme park owner in the world so Hurrican katrina just killing New Orleans Sixflags they got insurance payoff (undisclosed) and then they lease off the park owning the land (rendering the structures/rides worthless) till a time when Land value increases then they`ll sell for a tidy profit
@CheerFreak1001 sorry to hear that was it a good park but as far as I know Six Flags did sell of European parks under bank ruptcy protection to clear $345m debt which they did and they lifted the protection but still made a huge profit and are doing so. latest is there annual profit is over $1.02Bn in just in one season. that should make there share holders happy but you loose your local park. unfortunately.
and so what are small parks eh... so sad as Six Flags is $72.09 per share and their is 27Million Shares on the stock market as for New Orleans the Park was sold as a Lease but own the land and they did get Insurance payoff so if its demolished its of No Loss to Share Holders or CEO`s
correction 20.5M Dollers company value of Six flags and no wonder small parks are Dead is 2,007.478Million Dollers or $2.1Bn just this year According to Financial channel stock trader Bloomberg or FT index International so what is a 20.5 million woodie coaster mmmm nothing just petty cash!
LOL in fact Six Flags built huge coaster Son of Beast for cost of ..... wait for it!..... $25.5M woodie but it had way to many technically Probs unlike its big brother the beast which is thankfullystill running. anyhow it was dismantled and replaced with metal coaster and Six Flage Corporate giants lost $32M just on that one ride!
have they demolished the park yet completely or do those wooden structures still stand where the roller coaster used to sit...seems like it was a pretty cool park in its heyday...sad to see it just rotting away like that
I was a monkey in my youth. We played tag in the trees. I mean we jumped from tree to tree when playing tag. In other words the guys in my neighborhood were like coiled springs. I wrote earlier on here that my mother used all her strength to keep my brother from jumping off and to keep herself from being thrown off. She still remembers this event vividly. I do to. It took all my built up tree jumping muscles to keep from being throw out. I am not exaggerating. It was the fast.
In the early sixties my parents took us to this park. There was a community near by that consisted of nothing but small family houses. My Uncle Ed and Aunt Jimmie lived in one of them when they moved down from Alabama. When I was about 7 years old my younger brother Dave who was 6, my mom who was 25 and I got on that Ferris wheel. It was so fast that my brother was doing everything he could to get off the ride. My mom was doing everything she could to keep herself and Dave in the seat.
So thats why Chippewa lake shut the Cedar Point has ultimate Extreme coasters and other rides the end....Unless old park clears up toatally and they build new extreme high adrenalin high octane theme park and that should knock Cedar Point into history I would If I buy old Old chippewa Total extreme ridess and coasters Not for Children!!!
Sorry folks! ...If that park was still in Business you would have never recognised it, as Im 100% sure the all the rides would have been long replaced with all new ones and most importantley the management would have been thinking of the next extreme coaster or ride for 2012!!! Infact they probably would have been building a new one ready to unveil. but they didnt keep up so no point even dreaming about something that dead back in the seventies.
HOLY CRAP I HAVE BEEN THERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

but Scrap value to lease holder being in several million dollers the rides are working order and can give a small fiancial yield or operating profit till a time they are actually scrapped! they cannot loose either way!!

Bignadim 7 months ago
@Bignadim Six Flags in my neighborhood went bankrupt and closed as well....
CheerFreak1001 7 months ago

Bignadim 7 months ago
have they demolished the park yet completely or do those wooden structures still stand where the roller coaster used to sit...seems like it was a pretty cool park in its heyday...sad to see it just rotting away like that

I'm obsessed with this park now..does anyone know if you can still go in? I live kinda close and would just die if I could go.

@ohio1953 Your little brother could have ended up dead like that gal that fell from the Ferris Wheel in NJ last week.

WHY DO THEY LEAVE THE PARK TO ROT?????
Chriscubsfan 8 months ago
Sorry folks! ...If that park was still in Business you would have never recognised it, as Im 100% sure the all the rides would have been long replaced with all new ones and most importantley the management would have been thinking of the next extreme coaster or ride for 2012!!! Infact they probably would have been building a new one ready to unveil. but they didnt keep up so no point even dreaming about something that dead back in the seventies.
