  • Thanks for posting :) I have to do some creative Self-Defense and breaking for TKD also. You've given me more to think about. I like the ending :) ...you guys don't have mats?

  • @tkdistsuper Thanks for the comment..this video seems long long ago :) The floor is padded. The concrete base is covered with rectangular judo-type mats, and then all of that is covered with this wood-colored covering.

  • @coralreefer That's different from what I'm used too. I was thinking you were doing this test at a church, instead of a regular place/gym, so that's why you didn't have mats. The wood-colored covering makes it very dramatic :)

  • third one was a fireman's throw am i correct? at least that is what we call it at my school =/

  • @ZaneBoven

To be honest I really don't know what it is called, I just picked it up while taking Judo at the university I was training at.. There is a Korean name (which I believe was really a Japanese term) but I cant recall it at the moment.

  • Great job man. Thats a nice example whats the benefits from a sphere view to martial arts can do while u practiced Hapkido and Judo with Taekwondo based knowledge. Im working on my 2nd dan in December in ITF and looking forward to practice Ju Jitsu. Keep fighting ;)

  • Some really fun moves in this video, coralreefer. Nice test, at least for that portion. Congrats.

  • great job. for those who bash tkd, remember, it's the man, not the art.

  • this is not really a tkd. It is more hapkido . I fight a tkd guy but he doesn't know now to defend himself. Im a aikido-ka

  • I hold dan rank in TKD and Aikido, and I've seen a lot of people from both arts who can't fight their way out of a paper bag on the street. The cream always rises to the top, regardless.

  • last one looked like aikido.....

  • It's very hard to see TKD performed in the context of 'real life'. Most of the video footage is with an emphasis on good looking flashy kicks. Not to disrespect the art form, but it's nice to see the application of self defense. Thanks for posting.

  • Just to update, this video is more than 2 years old. Since that time I have begun training at a MMA gym here in Korea. I find the MMA training a refreshing change from the typical TKD environment. No matter what I study I will always define myself as a TKD guy. Like everything, MA's are evolving, and TKD is evolving as well. People give TKD alot of crap, and some of it is deserved but much of it is based on a misunderstanding of what TKD is, which is different for every person who practices it.

  • What this coreographed?

    Looked nice either way.

  • disrespectful kids...

  • Congrats to your partner too. What did he love more : The Kata Guruma or the finish?

  • I'm not sure. I had promised him a steak dinner for assisting me, but soon after that test, he left for America to teach Taekwondo. I personally think he did a great job considering he has no real experience with breakfalls.

  • Awesome.

  • dude, dig the fireman's carry. Nice sets

  • Very nice! You certanly deserve your 2nd dan. I'm first degree black belt in kung fu and you really impressed me. The defense against baton really reminded me of my own black belt test. Great job!

  • I didn't know there were black belts in kung fu. i thought there were just saches of different colors you wore.

  • You are right that it is a black sash and not a belt per say. I'm Swedish so please excuse my english.

  • all the moves are great but I would not go with that armbar,I train in taekwondo and you should not take it to the ground usually the attacker has company

  • Yes, you are correct. This portion of the test, was a chance for me to demonstrate some of the other techniques I had learned. In that particular defense, the takedown came from my Judo class(I didnt do it correctly) and the armbar was just fun.

  • its just traditionnal military tkdo...RARE but its tkd is not only a sport

  • really good, i got my yellow belt today but you sure give me the will to train really hard! nice video and nice moves!

  • Your amazing !!!! finally... there are too many ppl on here claiming to be black belts when the level of skill is just no there, I guess it's the fault of the school for awarding black belts to those who aren't ready simply because they can pay for the grading. You truely deserve your second dan and you must have had great teachers. I train in Taekwondo by the way and have done Wing Chun for 2 years

  • I've been studying Tae Kwon Do for 17 years, been teaching for the last 8, and I'm a 4rd dan, but still I feel completely humbled...

  • the ki hap's at the end of every move are fucking annoying..and yeah i study tae kwon do. otherwise, nice take downs and joint locks.

  • hmmm.. im doing judo now... maybe i should cross train in takewondo just for the sake of the black belt... Im kidding!!! no disrespect guys...

  • good video! yes its hapkido, but the attacker is using taekwondo technique. shows exactly why you never fly at somebody. watch the ufc guys if you doubt me. theres so many leg breaks and soft point strikes you learn you cant really practice them all out. and i'm a kukiwon 3rd degree in tkd, 1st in hapkido and former us national team member.

  • Very good! Very effective techniques.

  • some of this stuff is learnt early in hapkido, aswell as all the kicks and strikes

  • This comment is very true. Everything you see there, was very basic Hapkido and Judo that was learned during 2 semesters of Hapkido and Judo classes at my college here in Korea. As was said, everything you see in that video, is learned early on in the study of each art. As I came to Korea to learn and study other arts other that Taekwondo, I used the creative Self-Defense requirement of my test to show my master some of the things I have picked up since being in Korea.

  • cool video! the guys amazin!

  • Finally a good Hapkido Video which shows how devestating it can be

  • Exxcelent, awesome takedowns and locks. So fluid.

  • Wouldn't fancy being the guy in blue. Even if he is breaking his fall the other guy throws and floors him over and over again.

  • wow..this is pretty cool so is this all Hapkido?

  • HKD is purely self-defense techniques.

Taekwondo also contains, breaking, forms, one-steps, sparring, sport and self-defense techniques... some similar to or the same as Hapkido.

Our Taekwondo school also performs joint locks and throws similar to the video here.

  • Mate u have know idea what ur talking about Hapkido has Breaking, forms, sparring we also learn breakfalling, joint locks, joint manipulation, throwing, grappling, weapons and our organization is only two steps below the founder Choi Yong-Sul so our school is very authentic

  • Is not HKD about self defense- and more? So is TKD? That's my point, in no way discrediting HKD. Taekwondo and Hapkido both share so much (except weapons). It goes to show you that the completeness and effectiveness of a martial art is as much a reflection of the way the student and teacher practice it as it is the art itself.

  • in TKD you also learn to fight with weapons (im a 2rd degree dan, and i have just startet fighting with asword,

  • Taekwondo is a Korean art. The Korean government recognizes only the Kukkiwon as the governing body for Taekwondo. Nowhere in the Kukkiwon's curriculum are "sword skills" taught. Taekwondo is an unarmed martial art, hence it's name 'the way of hand and foot fighting'. You may be learning sword from a TKD master that also knows swordsmanship, but the sword should not be confused as part of TKD. If you are unsure visit the Kukkiwon, read the Kukkiwon text book or study TKD in Korea.

  • cool, ok:P i learn from Grand MAster CHo woon Sup

  • Definetly hapkido, NOT taekwondo.

  • Now this looks more of a 1st Dan stuff! Good work.

  • korean system of hapkido very effective the system i study they pay more attention to compitition then self defense im thinking about switching to hapkido

  • I train in Hapkido in Australia and we don't compete in compititions for the exact reason that Hapkido Techniques r too brutal and should only be used in self defense

  • Competition has it's place. If you can't defend yourself one-on-one in a friendly competition with rules, weight classes, protective gear, limited techniques and a referee then there little to no chance that you will have the ability to defend yourself under more serious circumstances. Competition teaches us to operate under pressure. An authentic HKD school will at least have medium to full contact sparring if not tournament competition.

  • Yeah we now compete in our organization in free sparring, no pads, but medium contact with grappling. And i can tell u that i have a much better chance of defending myself with Hapkido then Taekwondo.

  • Good for you. Maybe this is in part because the HKD school and teacher you found are better than than the TKD school and teacher you found. Maybe your understanding of HKD is better than your understanding of TKD? Or are you saying HKD is simply better than TKD?

  • Hey look i love all Martial Arts i trained in TKD when i was younger for 2 years i now train in HKD which i just find to be far more effective then TKD but i do think the guy in this video has some nice skills

  • solid ability to transition from strikign to grappling. you are well rounded and your uke is quite good too.

  • Wow! Must have taken you a long time to memorize all the forms! Good job!
