@jfsa380 It's a day train, so no sleeper is needed. I don't think length of the trip (although it is rather long for a day train) is the only consideration in whether checked baggage service is provided.
Amtrak goes 90 mph right through the middle of Carlsbad? north of San Diego. As a Presenter for Operation Lifesaver I was permitted to ride in the locomotive.
Seems very strange to be traveling that fast IN TOWN looking right into store fronts on the west and residences on the east. (we're in the middle of a vacant field between the two streets)
People and pets are illegally crossing the track. We come to a bridge we cannot see because of trees, then speed through two crossings on either side of a station. The engineer starts blowing for the crossings even though they cannot be seen around the trees. One May, a drunk high school just grad, his girlfriend piggyback fighting to get off him, went onto the track to scare her. Moron misjudged - both killed instantly.
anyone notice how the motorists in both directions waited until the crossing gates went all the way back up AND the lights stopped flashing? unusually obedient.
Yeah, cuz they were probably shocked that a train could fly like that. They were like, "Wow. If we get hit by one of those, we won't be identifiable even with dental records."
The Palmetto has the locomotive, the baggage car, and 5-6 coaches. (Usually 5 but sometimes you see 6.) The first coach is the cafe/business class car and all the rest are regular coaches.
that's fast

Why the baggage car if a day train? ...or, on the other hand, why no sleeper if a night train?

@decline2state thanks, oh, my bad, i missed the horizon baggage car, or is it a heritage, and for that matter, how do you differentiate them?

The location of this crossing is Howe Springs Rd. just south of Florence, SC. I went to high school about 1/2 a mile from here.

Back in the day Atlantic Coast Line used to split the crossings at 100+ MPH.

Nice to see cars stop and not drive around the gates. Good drivers.
cochranexyz 1 year ago
@cochranexyz ... and I saw they also waited until the gates were completely up and the signals off before moving.

Based on the lenght of the train and the amount of time it took to pass through the crossing, I'd estimate its speed right at 79 mph.

"That looks like it is in Florida."
I don't think so. According to Amtrak's timetable, the Palmetto only goes as far south as Savannah, GA.
The train appeared to take only about 5 sec to travel its own length.
