Great video!! I just ordered the same tank and looking forward to getting it. I really like your cork board idea. Would you possibly share your paper work templates with me? I would love a copy for myself to go by.
Thank you for the video. It helped me. But you do not need to use that reverse osmosis crap. Not being mean im just saying that is nothing but a gimic for places to make money.
I am totally new to this hobby and completely in the dark... I already had the sand and the L.R in the tank being that i took it from a friend. I added purified/filtered water from the tap and have Instant ocean salt (10G) for my tank (Biocube 14). I haven't added the salt yet being that i want to make sure where I am at is good.. Is there any advice you can provide or perhaps a website you can guide me to that will give me the complete setup for a tank of this sort.. Thanks, nice tank......
Hey - great tank and super video!! I really appreciate it. I´m just about to go get my own brand new tank (a Red Sea Max 250) later this week, and I´m soo excited. Patience is THE THING when it comes to saltwater, and I´ve got loads of that (thankfully!), so meanwhile I´ll be reading and watching the net for tips and information like yours. Thanks again for a really nice contribution!
I do not however cycle with fish in the tank. I accept no loss of fish life if I can control it. By the time the CUC is added to the tank the nitrification and dentrification properties are established to the point that NH4, NO3, stay zero.
so fare your doing great, word of advice though, in order for your cleaner crew to do good, you need a fish for them to clean after. I would recommend 2-3 green chromis damsels to start of with, then for the cleaner crew 6 hermits, 3-6 turbo snails, 1-2 cleaner shrimp ( cherry or scarlet skunk), a emerald crab, and possibly a blue star, oh how big is your tank in gallons, ~ advice from a 7 year saltwater veterian, with a 75 g reef tank
I just wanted to say that I started setting up my own reef tank a year ago, right before I found out I was moving =(. I only got through the phase that you go to in this video so luckily I didn't waste and living thing. But after seeing you incredibly organized set up I definitely know how I can improve my second set up in my tanks permanent home so thanks =)
No you will always hit a bloom. If it's not the silicates then it will be the die off from transporting the live rock. If not that then it will be the adjustment period of having your NH2/3, PO4 ect swing. I say enjoy the bloom, because when it goes away it's super exciting!
lionfairi...... saltwater might be a bit more work but i think its really worth it. it also bring a nice feeling to your home. freshwater is nice but once you can control it and become an expertt on fresh it becomes boring. now saltwater your allways learnng and experiminting with ew corals and fish.
i feel you man. i started this hobby about 3 years ago when i was 14 years old. clearly i didnt know what i was doing but little by little you learn and grow your knowledge. i now own a 20 gallon tank thats cycling at the moment and my old 10 gallon tank that im about to transfer into my 20. good luck and hope you have a good time.
@ dgonza11 an alge bloom is inevitable as the sand will have sillacates in it that will cause the alge to consume it in the form of P04, since this will happen it would seem best to leave the lights on to jump start the silicate oxidation process this way 4 weeks or so later when you add life to the tank (CUC) you have less alge bloom to worry about.
@porsche205mph i heard arag-alive by caribsea has no silicates in it though. would algae still come in? i know there are still other algaes that feed off more than silicate, but will using a substrate without silicates remove the algae bloom in the beginning?
I'm not gonna lie but salt water tank is the best.... But the amount of work that goes into it a lot.... When u compare to fresh water is a differance of night n and day....... I'm afraid to approach salt water tank....
I make this to help you and the video has me speaking to give context and disclaimer to my video operation. there is a little bar at the bottom of the window and you can "scrub forward" to skip past any comentary you dont like. Sorry my free service to you "wasted your time"
yeah u can use tap water if ur doing fish only u just need to get rid of the bad stuff which is like in freshwater, u just add the dechlorinizer (check spelling) stuff (brainblock) and also mix salt first before anything l0l i just started today but those were a few things i think ppl should know, but good job, im going all starter, tank filter, and everything
U should've mix the water with sea salt before u added it to the tank. All the liverock is now dead n must be reseeded. I'm sry, but u named ur rock!! hahaha I'd think u'd name fish, maybe corals...but ROCK! On a brighter note, good luck man. Ur in for a journey..
very nice live rock build, i just got my 29 gallon tank setup and everything like ph, ammonia etc is all normal so i decided to add 1 damsel and 2 clowns and im hoping the ammonia will rise to build up the bacteria hopefull not killing my fish, im a begginer too so we probably have alot in common, keep up the great work!
i know what you maen im also going to start a tank with the red sea max 130 just have to get some more monye for it fist LOL. hope you make a very nice tank i know i plan to.
Your tank is cool dude! I am hoping to start a 55 gallon reef tank this summer... this is sort of my first time with a tank as well... I've only had goldfish in a fishbowl.
from my understanding and this may be myth or just playing it safe (ive yet to start a saltwater tank) your only to put in a live rock and a fish once a month as to not shock the tank. cramming to much life in the system may overload the tank

started one, put in live rock o cycle the water, it had loads of worms, starfish and crabs. something happened to the water and it went up the creek. stunk out the house in a couple of days, water went murky and slimy at the top. found my filter system was passing, not working correctly (resun nano cube) emptied and looking at getting a different tank and also larger to start again.
That is a question that if you are asking you should go to a book store and grab a nice book that can serve as an intro to setting up and running a saltwater tank.
Just wanted to let you know I really appreciate your willingness to share your experiences with all of us. I'll be soon putting together a planted freshwater tank this coming summer so it's refreshing to see someone else who's new to this hobby as well.
i did one 7 years ago and it went fine for 1 year and i changed my filter system and killed all my fish and i just receantly tried again it is hard to keep my ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, down. keep up the good work.
ya ya i don't see a sump ... so...
