hey guys well i have a tip for the underpowered situation .. do what i did i have a 2001 drz400e (offroad) that i converted to street via baja kit. i love my bike :))) it has both sprkets changed for speed and only can cruise 55 or 60 ... also i have a yosi rs3 and i rejetted the carb and took the insert out of the air box. my dad has a dr650 and he cant near about touch my bike up to about 80:) hes workin on his though . cant stand bein slower than me

dont know why everyone thing the bike is "underpowered" is a very powerful 399 cc engine. if you want huge power get a CRF450R.. Thats power. Its all about the fun you can have with it not how fast it will go.

i got the same one but a 2005 blacked out and over 3400$ spent on it.. these bikes are nice and fast ..these is a way to maximize speed too..but then it wont be able to pass the inpection..but u can take it off and put in back on again..

How is highway riding on this thing? I have an SV650 an even with the small motor, got a couple speeding tickets, so looking to get something that will curb my enthusiasm. Would I be discouraged from going over 55 on this thing?

(This isn't my only reason for looking at motards, but should keep me honest when commuting)

I can cruise right along at 70 mph all day long. I can get mine up to 100mph if needed. LOnger trips you might get a little sore but short bursts, its a blast!

I had a choice between a used DRZ400 and a KTM Duke 2 640. Both the same year and about the same price. The KTM is a beast compared to the DRZ.... Some days I wish I had the DRZ for the simplicity and the effortlessness of the handling. But whenever I crank the KTM and drop off throttle to hear both pipes backfiring. I know why I choose KTM...

change the gearing, otherwise the engine will be kept at high rpms trying to hold 75... it tops at around 80 or 85 i think...

there are a lot of people with this bike, though, so mods are very abundant

you can make it a sm but the crf450x would be more likely to be street legal before the crf450r. plus the top end wouldnt last a month on the r compared to the x.

Are these bikes easy to ride? like is it comfortable for long distances? I dont like the seating and posture to ride racing bikes like R1s etc , All that leaning forward . Just that it looks a tad high. either this bike or the Yamaha tw200ep is my choice. dont know which one to pick.

I've only done one 100+ mile ride on my '06 S model and it was rough. My friend with her Yamaha '06 XT225 was some much more comfortable. I will say it could be a lot worse. benjenings I had a '01 Suzuki SV650S before the DRZ and that was painful except for short trips.

keep up.. more like smoke them in the curves.. but in a straight there is no comparison.. the sport bike will win.. but if your looking for a super fun way of getting around town supermoto is the way to go.. plus you will get more looks by cops on a supermoto!.. to me i have owned them all from dirt to sport bikes and the motard was more fun by far!

They're an ace bike for playing around on ,i went for the blue+white coz it looks stunning . Standard tyres are shit in wet , i had a horrible slide going downhill in the wet when someone ahead stopped.Had my feet down+everything trying to stop.Luckily the vehicle set off again+i managed to regain my composure.Must have looked a twat,put me off riding it in rain again.Roll on summer ,now that's a different story !!!

I wanted to get the 400s and the seat height is 36.8" compared the the 35" SM height. Is the SM better? I want to go offroad too.

the s would be better off road in stock form. because the sm has street tires on it... but they make dirt tires foe the sm.

Yea but the SM has the on road suspension. The S has the Drz 400E suspension.I just wanna cruise around and go offroading and drive around town. Maybe go on a few trips with it. My dad had a dual purpose bike when I was young. he bought a brand new 1992 dr 350. We call them enduros instead of dual sport or purpose. Its gonna be fun riding on the back roads.

I can ride mine anywhere but the tires are too slick for mud and wet stuff... the sm will be great for dirt gravel roads and dragging knees in the turns.. the only advantage the s will have over the sm is the tires in the dirt... and bty the sm has way better suspension for the street.

The SM suspension comes from the motocross RM 250 inverted forks(very nice)I belive the rear is the same as the s model?Just is set up with less travel.

yes... but is stock form it holds it own!..the bike is pretty fast...and will do over 100 mph stock! but if your looking to go 0-100 in 3 secs the get a sport bike.... these bike aren't made to go 150+ they are made to out perform all other bikes in the twisties.
