As an 8 1/2 year-old Vietnamese refugee living in a refugee camp in Guam in 1975, we often wandered into the jungle for fun; one time, we stumbled across a shot-down WW II Japanese aircraft WITH A SKELETOR REMAIN IN IT...I've sometimes wondered if that pilot didn't have the will to commit such a terrible act and crashed their to avoid "embarrassment" to the Emperor!!!

What did the kamikaze achieve? The total tonnage of American ships lost to such attacks was miniscule. Worse, kamikaze attacks simply confirmed American views that they were dealing with fanatics who would fight to the death. Any moral qualms about the use of the atom bomb would have been easier to set aside in these circumstances.

Many did fight to the death - very few POWs were taken on Saipan for example. But you have to wonder how many gave up their lives willingly in true bushido spirit. While many Japanese soldiers died fearful and desperate deaths, a disproportionate number of senior officers allowed themselves to be taken prisoner. A shameful set of double standards by any measure. Even the emperor, in whose name the war had been fought, acquiesed to the occupation forces. No more talk about bushido after that.

So much for the false romanticism of an honorable death. Nobody on the ground to wave goodbye. No thank you from the emperor. Just a crappy plane with just enough fuel for a one way trip and a 500 lb bomb. Piloted by frightened kids with barely enough training in basic airmanship. The officers who sent them on their way should have been tried as war criminals.
