  • Brilliant! The structure of the song sounds like nothing I've ever heard. Unique song.

  • Seriously, this is one of the most weirdly structured roots rock songs I've ever heard. I love the funky guitar all along, and the seamless transition betweeen the moody, disonnant chorus and the main rocker part of the song. Can't stop listening to this.

  • @AJRoman it's called dynamics..the Band were masters

  • @pretorious700 yes they were

  • @AJRoman another one is up on cripple creek... the dynamics are out there and its rockin'

  • One of the best albums ever recorded.

  • @jefflawton

itz a whale of an album.

  • The Band, no one ever sounded like them or ever will.

  • I saw them at the Schaffer Music Festival in Central Park right when this album was released. Efing great!!

  • the band destroys led zep, and i like led zep. its just a fact

  • @vakero198 You can't really compare the two. The Band is more classic rock while Led Zeppelin is more of a psychedelic type of rock. Led Zeppelin doesn't have an organ player nor a piano player.

  • @TheRandombk Have you ever heard of a man named John Paul Jones

  • @SwanSolo09 Don't you mean the Bassist for Led Zepp?

  • @TheRandombk and keyboardist and mandolin player and other guitar player and mellotron player

  • @SwanSolo09 Yes, but are the majority of their songs like The Band's? I think not.

  • @TheRandombk Your right, they are different styles of music. I was just saying that Led Zeppelin not having a piano or organ player is a false statement.

  • This would be my dream cover if Phish does it at Superball!

  • 55696 views. 0 dislikes. pretty solid record

  • to astheriveruns71 have you never heard of LED ZEPP the bands good but led zeppelin ARE AND ALWAYS WILL BE THE HAMMER OF THE GODS

  • @HendrixMarshmallows led zeppelin is overrated

  • @maincrash420 yea for real, this is way better

  • I love the picture of this album because the all have facial hair of some sort. They're pure beasts.

  • Neil Pert?

  • @ace5324 Not even close. Helluva drummer but nowhere near the songwriter.

    \

  • Canada had to provide the most American of all groups.

  • dumbass@mcmike100

  • One was a Californian I thought.

  • the band gets no respect! instead of concertos and operas or chuck berry on a satellite (incase its ever found by sumthing else) There is a gold disc with music and writings and basicly wat a few scientist thought was what aliens need to know about humans... dumb but true. I would hav made it just The Band and a picture of Levon Helms

  • Y'all have nailed it.

  • The way the bass and the drum play each other up, the eerie organ, that really stinging minimalistic guitar, and Richard's panicked voice are all absolutes.... I CANNOT imagine how they wrote this song and made it sound the way it does.... it just exists as an immaculate example of merging the roots influences with pure inspiration and creativity. It's something fresh pulled literally out of thin air.

  • Oh man that bass and organ duo make this soooooo sexy

  • I think there's a reason why they had that name ... it's because they're not any band .. They are THE Band (I'm sure millions said that before me)

but I love that song and they're really amazing :D

Thanks so much for uploading this :) I'm in love with it :)

  • Love That Bass Line

  • what makes The Band the greatest musical ensemble ever is the fact they were song oriented. They weren't the self indulgent soloists that were so prevalent during the late 60's and 70's. No one played a 10 minute guitar or drum solo. That's why this song and Cripple Creek, and all of them for that matter are so good. And they were Bob Dylan's band! Of course they were great.

  • This is, by far, my all time favorite song by the Canadian classic band The Band. To me, nothing else beats it! They would have nothing but crap later in the 1970s - I mean, "Acadian Driftwood" is just pure crap, IMO. Long live Robbie Robertson!

  • @JonSea31 I agree. After 1968 Big Pink,Stage Fright, Cahoots in1971 except the Rock of Ages live release from 1972 everything else in the studio by them was crap. Moonlight Matinee in 1973 and Northern Lights Southern Cross in 1975 sucked.

  • I love this song!

  • Richard Manual sings the chorus but that's pure Levon yelping the verses.

  • @metivo visa versa

  • @billsbus827 You're absolutely right! Boy, Manuel had an amazingly versiile voice.

  • @metivo great soul in that voice, thats why you see so many people cover this tune fail epically...

  • @metivo i hope this comment is a joke.

  • THE BAND !!!!!! No one could have written or played this way this good!!!!

  • An all-time classic tune- awesome!

  • Funkiest song to ever come out of Canadia!

  • best song ever.

  • Anyone heard Bruce Hornsby and the noisemakers version? It's a little more upbeat and I think it's pretty cool. I like the Band's original as it's one of the best songs, but just curious who else has heard BH's version. I can put it up if people want to hear it.

  • its hard to listen to other music after listeneing to the band

when they make songs like this.

  • possibly the best song they wrote

  • Well said

upabittoolate, i never comment on youtube but your assertion was entirely correct and i must tell you that i made intellectual food of it for quite awhile. Well said

  • The music itself is contemporary 60's style soul-funk (Booker T & MG's could be an influence here?), although Richard sings it with such a degree of conviction and realism that it's not too difficult to picture this song being recorded in the 30's Depression era. Timeless stuff indeed!

  • I read somewhere that Eric Clapton decided to quit Cream after listening to The Band... It is clear that their ingenious simplicity had a huge impact on musicians back then. Wish today's musicians spent some time listening to The Band...(sight)

  • richard manuel is singing for chrissake

  • I just don't know what has happened to music these days

  • These guys were so damn good & talented...no one can touch them today...

  • right on. The way they played so minimally, you can hear every instrument clearly, vocal as well. I read that after Sgt. pepper, G. Harrison spent time with the Band and Dylan. He brought back to the Beatles the message of 'back to the roots'... which is seen in the White Album..

  • BTW .... R.I.P. Richard & Rick

  • From a british boy--- fucking love this song, all round great.

    robbies solo is awesome too

  • Easy my friend. Unions can be good as long as there's regulation & legal protection against coercion. Hell, it's okay to be unskilled too... as long as the intent is to develop requisite (& hopefully marketable) skills. Wouldn't you agree? Better yet, isn't it better for laborers to have some protection? Unfortunately, this world is corrupt as hell. Strength in numbers keeps the big guys honest.

  • Not to mention the admittedly quaint and unfashionable idea that there is inherent dignity in honest labor even if it's *not* particularly skilled.

  • There IS inherent dignity in making an honest living whether it's a doctor or an an assembly line worker... at least to me there is. Bear in mind that I have an "elite" education. Also bear in mind that I've worked in more than 1 factory during my travels. I don't think it's quaint at all. Part of the problem with social mobility is that respect gets lost between classes.

  • @upabittoolate How true, my friend, how true. I gave up an unrewarding but VERY lucrative position to make my living selling items made by myself and my wife's four hands. All of a sudden - no surprise, really - our "friends" started to avoid us. We were still the same, I think - but they had changed. Not that they would see it that way.

  • @juneberrydesign With friends like that...

  • Take your Republican politics out of here. The Teabag party is the other way.

  • This is a revolutionary song, believe it or not....

  • BEAUTIFUL & POIGNANT

  • This song is so COOL!!!! I LOVE IT. Levon's voice is amazing.

  • Richard Manuel sings lead on most of this song

  • I know who sings the most leads in this song. I was simply saying that I love Mr. Levon Helm voice. Chill.... Listen to to rice as wind blows cross the water.

  • he was merely stating out a very important point about this song

  • Richard Manuel was considered the lead singer of The Band. So what is the very important point? All of those guys were so talented. Levon, Thank God is still with us. And he is still doing his thing. Everything he has been through and still making great music. He is a living legend.

  • Well, Levon Helm and Rick Danko sang lead on many of the Band's songs. How many bands have had three great lead singers?

  • I can't think of another band that had more talent than The Band.

  • @astheriverruns1971 dude, Jonas brothers obviously. god.

  • that better be a joke dude or i will hunt u down.

  • @ astheriverruns1971 haha... you got me. The sad thing is though, some people might actually think that.

  • @astheriverruns1971 Yeah , but maybe the beatles...

  • @astheriverruns1971 the beatles, but that's about it

  • @TRBUFF no not even close, take off ur nostalgia glasses (or what have you) and then listen to the beatles.....

  • @astheriverruns1971 THE BEATLES

  • @astheriverruns1971

Jesus and the Saints. Oh, wait...

  • @astheriverruns1971

    The Beatles?

  • @astheriverruns1971 Steel Panther.

  • phenomenal

  • king harvest has surely come

  • I have to agree with the fav quote. Richard RIP.

  • the year this was recorded, says more about the band than any to early historian can grasp.

wish i was around 100 years from now to see what songs have withstood time.

  • one of the greatest songs ever written

  • context my friend. context. there was a time that unions were the last bastions of unskilled white men. don't forget that a lot of the band's subject matter is a narrative about laborers. remember the song about virgil cain?

  • levon helm has an awesome voice

  • richard **

  • My favorite song from this album.

  • The soulful desperation and fear in Richard's voice makes this song such a timeless classic. Not bad 'Americana' by four canadians and quite possibly the best singer-songwriter-drummer of all time.

  • exactafuckinactly!

  • I thought Levon was the performer on this song. In the end, they were both so good that they're almost interchangable.

  • That's the genius and beauty of The Band.

    Have a great night!

  • @CapeBretonerinOttawa i love levon man but robertson wrote the majority of the songs including this one

  • @CapeBretonerinOttawa 2 canadians.

  • @fiendclub420 4 canadians brother garth, richard, rick, and robbie were all from canada

  • @CapeBretonerinOttawa Levon Helm is American

  • @CapeBretonerinOttawa quite possibly??? Name another singer/songwriter/drummer in the same league as Levon

  • That picky little guitar solo at the end is so cool. Great tune.

  • One of my favourite songs of all time. Used to love listening to this as a lullaby when I was going to sleep. Richard's so brilliant.

    "I just wanna break even!"

  • Love this song, even though i'm not really into this genre of music. Check that bass out - the way it stutters about underneath the organ and guitar is beautiful. Truly great music transcends any categorisation.

  • Check out the live version for sure. Lets not forget about Levon Helm on those drums!

  • Best Band Ever.

  • I just wanna break even!" ... haha ...fav quote from the Last Waltz hands down. Well said Tugsandtost!

  • Last year this time, wasn't no joke

My whoooooole barn went up in smoke

Another great vocal performance from Richard Manuel.

  • It's been literally AGES since I've heard this song the last time. WOW it just blows my mind to hear it again after all those years. Thanks A MILLION for uploading it even with LYRICS. Man this made my day :)

  • 5 uniquely and varied talents in 1 band. most bands today lucky to have 1/2 of a talented person.

  • they don't make em like this anymore

  • awesome song, makes want to live on a ranch or something hehe

  • Incredibly prolific group and the only bad albums they ever made were ones forced by contractual obligations. Levon is one hell of an actor too.

  • love this song :) thanks

  • Their best song from the best Band album. Thanks Nalencer! The song writing, vocals and instrumentation will never be equaled.
