Seriously, this is one of the most weirdly structured roots rock songs I've ever heard. I love the funky guitar all along, and the seamless transition betweeen the moody, disonnant chorus and the main rocker part of the song. Can't stop listening to this.
@vakero198 You can't really compare the two. The Band is more classic rock while Led Zeppelin is more of a psychedelic type of rock. Led Zeppelin doesn't have an organ player nor a piano player.
@TheRandombk Your right, they are different styles of music. I was just saying that Led Zeppelin not having a piano or organ player is a false statement.
the band gets no respect! instead of concertos and operas or chuck berry on a satellite (incase its ever found by sumthing else) There is a gold disc with music and writings and basicly wat a few scientist thought was what aliens need to know about humans... dumb but true. I would hav made it just The Band and a picture of Levon Helms
The way the bass and the drum play each other up, the eerie organ, that really stinging minimalistic guitar, and Richard's panicked voice are all absolutes.... I CANNOT imagine how they wrote this song and made it sound the way it does.... it just exists as an immaculate example of merging the roots influences with pure inspiration and creativity. It's something fresh pulled literally out of thin air.
what makes The Band the greatest musical ensemble ever is the fact they were song oriented. They weren't the self indulgent soloists that were so prevalent during the late 60's and 70's. No one played a 10 minute guitar or drum solo. That's why this song and Cripple Creek, and all of them for that matter are so good. And they were Bob Dylan's band! Of course they were great.
This is, by far, my all time favorite song by the Canadian classic band The Band. To me, nothing else beats it! They would have nothing but crap later in the 1970s - I mean, "Acadian Driftwood" is just pure crap, IMO. Long live Robbie Robertson!
@JonSea31 I agree. After 1968 Big Pink,Stage Fright, Cahoots in1971 except the Rock of Ages live release from 1972 everything else in the studio by them was crap. Moonlight Matinee in 1973 and Northern Lights Southern Cross in 1975 sucked.
Anyone heard Bruce Hornsby and the noisemakers version? It's a little more upbeat and I think it's pretty cool. I like the Band's original as it's one of the best songs, but just curious who else has heard BH's version. I can put it up if people want to hear it.
upabittoolate, i never comment on youtube but your assertion was entirely correct and i must tell you that i made intellectual food of it for quite awhile. Well said
The music itself is contemporary 60's style soul-funk (Booker T & MG's could be an influence here?), although Richard sings it with such a degree of conviction and realism that it's not too difficult to picture this song being recorded in the 30's Depression era. Timeless stuff indeed!
I read somewhere that Eric Clapton decided to quit Cream after listening to The Band... It is clear that their ingenious simplicity had a huge impact on musicians back then. Wish today's musicians spent some time listening to The Band...(sight)
right on. The way they played so minimally, you can hear every instrument clearly, vocal as well. I read that after Sgt. pepper, G. Harrison spent time with the Band and Dylan. He brought back to the Beatles the message of 'back to the roots'... which is seen in the White Album..
Easy my friend. Unions can be good as long as there's regulation & legal protection against coercion. Hell, it's okay to be unskilled too... as long as the intent is to develop requisite (& hopefully marketable) skills. Wouldn't you agree? Better yet, isn't it better for laborers to have some protection? Unfortunately, this world is corrupt as hell. Strength in numbers keeps the big guys honest.
There IS inherent dignity in making an honest living whether it's a doctor or an an assembly line worker... at least to me there is. Bear in mind that I have an "elite" education. Also bear in mind that I've worked in more than 1 factory during my travels. I don't think it's quaint at all. Part of the problem with social mobility is that respect gets lost between classes.
@upabittoolate How true, my friend, how true. I gave up an unrewarding but VERY lucrative position to make my living selling items made by myself and my wife's four hands. All of a sudden - no surprise, really - our "friends" started to avoid us. We were still the same, I think - but they had changed. Not that they would see it that way.
I know who sings the most leads in this song. I was simply saying that I love Mr. Levon Helm voice. Chill.... Listen to to rice as wind blows cross the water.
Richard Manuel was considered the lead singer of The Band. So what is the very important point? All of those guys were so talented. Levon, Thank God is still with us. And he is still doing his thing. Everything he has been through and still making great music. He is a living legend.
context my friend. context. there was a time that unions were the last bastions of unskilled white men. don't forget that a lot of the band's subject matter is a narrative about laborers. remember the song about virgil cain?
The soulful desperation and fear in Richard's voice makes this song such a timeless classic. Not bad 'Americana' by four canadians and quite possibly the best singer-songwriter-drummer of all time.
Love this song, even though i'm not really into this genre of music. Check that bass out - the way it stutters about underneath the organ and guitar is beautiful. Truly great music transcends any categorisation.
