Though, out of the big four....metallica isn't qualified for King Diamond's style or Mercyful Fates, I think slayer would have been a better choice of the four bands to be honest if you think about it....Metallica and Megadeth are better for covering kiss, alice cooper, and diamond head, Anthrax is better for rap and punk/hardcore covers, Slayer is better for death metal and black metal and crust punk and grindcore covers....its the elements of their styles....I mean come on south of heaven....

thats why they play in a lower tuning, its less strain on the voice. i'd rather have them play like this instead of them continuing to play in standard and have to hear james really struggling to sing the higher notes

A thing to keep in mind is that King Diamond is quite old (hes born 1951) so judging by his age his voice is still REALLY good and probably 90% the same since early mercyful fate days.
@Kotik112 I saw Soundgarden live in 1994, and Chris Cornell just couldn't sing in a high pitch like he did in the studio. It's inspiring to hear King Diamond perform that task effortlessly as usual.

My dad was born in 1950 and i also know about what kotik is saying.
I recently heard from livia, that the king is undergoing a triple by pass on his heart. Yes, he is old. Hes the same age as my dad, but as luck would have it my dad has a clean bill of health although i dont know why exactly, he does not watch anything at all, although he does take blood thinners.

its pretty obvious if you listen to their seattle 89 gig, then listen to a gig from like '93
thats why they play in a lower tuning, its less strain on the voice. i'd rather have them play like this instead of them continuing to play in standard and have to hear james really struggling to sing the higher notes
and plus he's like what?, 50 now lol. i saw them 2 years ago in manchester, and they still put on an awesome show. people complain wayyy too much these days

A thing to keep in mind is that King Diamond is quite old (hes born 1951) so judging by his age his voice is still REALLY good and probably 90% the same since early mercyful fate days.

Maybe if he'd sung the way he did on Metallica's first 3 albums, but at this stage (1998) he was employing a country and western twang that was just out of place for Metallica's music, much less for a Mercyful Fate cover.
