anyone who has the nokia surge: how do you dial number and speak? i mean u open the qwerty and dial the numbers and then slide the phone back and listen?

As far as dialing goes, it is not a touch screen to dial. YOu have to either, A) slide the keyboard out to dial, B) scroll for number under contacts, or C) find number under Dialed Numbers. Options B and C do not require you to slide open the keyboard.

no u can leave the phone open and mainly if ur calling some1 u know u wud just go 2 contacts and not open the phone up at all the phone is actually very good quality and in my opinion 4 out of 5 stars

LG Vu sucks. My phone didn't last too long and the screen is really sensitive.

Samsung Solstice (my uncle has a different kind of Samsung, but it's also a touch screen). His is working fine. He's had it for quite awhile now. I think it's actually a lot better than the Vu.

Nokia Surge. I just purchased it today and it's alright. It has MobiTV, internet's great and texting is easy.

How do you place a call? Does the screen need closing after dialing the number?

I had trouble with figuring that out too. But you just go on the main screen (just keep pressing the "end call" button) and then once you're on the main screen (not main menu), you can dial the number. And it's your choice whether or not you want to leave the screen open or closed. Either way, it'll work.

I've thrown several nokias against walls, none broke....then I threw one at a suitcase and broke the little stand on the bottom of the suitcase clean off, while just the case of the phone broke. Every nokia I've had survived some INSANE shit. I don't know what your doing to your phones but it must be some wild stuff. Nokia has always done me right. I guess some people just have better luck with different brands. Motorolas hate me =D
