  • Love it, old fashion gospel always reaches my soul (before folks comment negative I like some new gospel also), peace and blessings

  • No better voice than Kelly's for this beautiful song. I am glad to know she is well and with us. I felt like the Singers were living down the street from me when listening to their music. (they didn't though); because their harmonies and voices and the arrangements were so wonderfully alive. Thank you for this vintage post. And THANK YOU Elaine.

  • Wow! Thanks for all these wonderful compliments. Elaine Kelly is doing well. She lives in the Sacramento area of California. She did attend Bishop Hawkins funeral as did many of the original Edwin Hawkins Singers. I will be sure to tell my aunt Elaine all of the wonderful comments that you all have posted as she doesn't have a computer. LOL. Elaine never recorded a solo album. She's retired but currently works with unwed mothers and other programs at her local church.

  • Loved it ! Laid them to test in 3:15. A quick work.

  • Amazing.sing sister and brother sing!!

  • I am sure those four dislikea were just mistakes. That or Satan is messing with us.

  • That's the voice of Johnny Cash at the start.

  • 4 people did not want to go to my father's house

  • Man homeboy is smacking them bongos

  • @beboyd1 they are def gettin' it...lol

  • Thank you for posting! I love this song and had a hard time finding this version. Real musicians, no autotune, just real music! Prais de Lawd!

  • i love every bit of this but at 2:14 she went real DEEP...lol

  • damn - I wish someone would re-record this today for the benefit of all who did NOT know this music back in the day

  • Did Elaine Kelly ever record an entire Album? If so, who's got a copy or where could I go to get a copy? Are there more YouTube posts of her. If so, please link the posts.

  • great singers but would'nt put this one on the ipod

  • @115MaxPower why not? It's on mine!

  • mame was leading that song!!!!!powerful-- where have all the plain ole signing form th gut and beltiing it out gone

  • Lord! There's Walter on the right!

  • Who is nuts enough to thumbs down on this? They don't make music like this anymore :(

  • EDWIN HAWKINS IS AMAZING!!!!

  • Take notice: WALTER is singing tenor, right behind the soloist, the guy with the process hairstyle

  • i still remember like yesterday over 30 some odd years ago, i was lil boy then. but it was one tuesday nite when our choir practiced this song. my cousin (male) led it. he was hitting the high notes and all. lol. i never knew until this moment that this was a hawkins family song. lol classic, nostalgic, spiritual, and just plain good singing.

  • You can hear Walter over everyone singing...that's a real tenor!

  • Yeah Walter is on the right behind Elaine.

  • Sing that Soprano Aunt Ruthann Lyons. Wow, what a treasure.

  • Man!! Lynette coped everything from Elaine Kelly.. U can't tell the difference between the two,, if U weren't looking U would never know it wasn't Lynette. Lynette is my favorite Female vocalist,, i love when I can see where people get there stuff from. I wish i could've heard Donny Hathaway and my girl Lynette do a duet together,, Man i would've been all done after that!!!!

  • @SickGirl1966 Yep I commented about his a year ago. I think at the time Lynette was too young to be part of the group.

  • @jimboedwardlee Thats Lynette with the group of singers on the left side of the stage,,, she's the chubby one on the right. She's about 15 years old, me and her R about the same age i was 15 in 1971.

  • @ObamaWonFool Thanks for the info. I think that you are right.

  • @ObamaWonFool That's not her. a) On the left side, those are the sopranos. Lynette is an alto. B) You can clearly see that the 'chubby' one is a grown woman.

  • Look at the TRAMAINE. Whoooo.

  • @zivaray dumb question....is she the soloist that is clearly getting it? ive heard her voice....but i've never seen her

  • @handelfan610 never mind...she's singing back up.

  • Is that Walter singing in the tenor section?

  • @Clemsonshawty Yes.

  • I had forgotten just how good your group could sing. Come on and go with me to my father's house. Where can I find this cd? Always

  • now this is church thank you for the post

  • Why were Elaine and Walter killing so hard on the lead and that "push lead" that Walter was giving? Killing...!

  • My Man Playing Those Bongos LOL

  • I love this song..I actually have this ALBUM,,,so it's great to see this video...by the way...this album is classic... a young Tramaine Hawkins..before she got married i believe...just beautiful

  • This is where I go to lift my spirit, gospel music makes my soul soar to the heights, Bless whomever made this post!

  • Wow, I remember this style of singing when I was young in Columbus, Ohio. There are some great singers in the church in Ohio!

  • Wow dat was bumpin dey had a great and so did I.

  • There is nothing like this! I hope they will sing it at the Hawkins Music and Arts Love Fellowship Conference in Chicago this June. This is my vote for that!

  • We still sing this song in church 2010........

  • What that Lynette on lead vocals?

  • What made the Edwin Hawkins singers grreat with Jesus in their Spirit was their ability to do so many different versions to a song.

  • I have the original album and it is still sounds good. I remember when I was a kid we sang this in the choir.

  • Never mind found it :)

  • From Gods Word the Bible: John 3:16

"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son.

  • I'm so glad we can still find such gems as these sisters... music of hope and inspiration, thanks for your wonderful video

  • I may hv to pull this out of mothballs and reteach to my choir...wonder if I can borrow a lead like Elaine to do it? hmmm...

  • This is truely GOSPEL music!!! "Come and go with me to MY father's HOUSE!!! There's nothing but JOY, LOVE and Peace!!!" Hallelujah!!! Thank you Jesus!!! Thanks for posting this video. Brings back good memories!!! Will you come and go with me to my father's house?

  • @bigbee7763

    Oh YES!!!!

  • LOL! I have watched this countless of times and it still cracks me up when I see that man clap that hard in the tenor section! He was feeling it lol!

  • as you can see, all of the thumbs down gave great reviews, even some who know the singers well...I dont think anyone was consious of those....no one has said anything negative...

  • OMG!!! (to da comment writers) dont think bad of everyone's opinion, thoughts, or ideas. gosh, all those thumbs down can make someone to go to a different song without even hearin dis one

  • what thumbs down????...there were none.....not sure what that meant....

  • i'm talkin bout all those red numbers further down da comment section 4rm da past 2months

  • That's Elaine Kelly. She also does several other leads, like I'm Gonna Praise Him".

  • That is Johnny Cash in the intro... great song, sound and singer! Elaine Kelly got it done!

  • That's Elaine Kelly not Shirley Miller.

  • are they all related?

im only 15 idk this group very well

  • This song brings back childhood memories, I use to lead this song in the childrens choir many years ago.

  • To: jointheir1

Thank you! 8 I know thy works: behold, I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it: for thou hast a little strength, and hast kept my word, and hast not denied my name Revelation 3

  • " I Believe" that was Mr. Johnny Cash,introducing Them ......

  • Rich!!

  • If you didn't see the lead singer, you would swear it was Lynette Hawkins! She (Lynette) sounds just like her. She has her style down to a science. Fantastic!

  • we all still crave this kind of sound when you can hear every word and can apply them to your life. the songs of today sometimes are just a bunch of noise

  • Whoa! She killed it. That's the kind of church I remember. Best rendition of that classic !

  • that's great and i feel good.Thanks for posting

  • Now I see who greatly influenced Lynette Hawkins Stephens singing style!

  • HAHA!!! Man you are so right!

  • Elaine has such a big voice ! She just pushes that sound right out !

  • Who is she? She has a big a voice. I thought it was Lynette Hawkins at first.

  • Shirley Miller. She is a relative of the Hawkins.

  • Not Shirley on the lead. Her range is too high! Shirley is a patent contralto.

  • If this is the original soloist for this original recording of this song, then it is Elain Kelley. This son is on Edwin Hawkins Singers "Let Us Go Into the House of the Lord" where "Oh Happy Day" was FIRST released.

  • wow - what energy

  • God created them for THAT reason.

  • wow, just wow. thanks for the blessing. this is wonderful to be heard. G_d bless you. Peace, in His love

  • Thanks for posting this gem. I was very young when this came out. This is the first time I have seen it. I am the biggest fan of the Hawkins family.

  • the video and the song are just beautiful!

  • Does sister Kelly and the origninal EH singers stil perform at all ? They are all so beautiful !

  • i APPROVE THIS SONG........

  • Make your comments and leave others alone for their comment please thank u.

  • Love the hairstyles, love the outfits, love the music. Miss Kelly knows her stuff!

  • Fabulous song...there's a freshness about this song even if is a 70s performance. Amazing lead singer - her voice has weight.

  • i love this ; i think its more intresting simple and to the point of how gospel is presented these days i love it.

  • Now! this is what I call singing

  • The thrilling days of yesteryear. Gospel at its best. O happy day, Come go with me, what sanging by the renowned Hawkins, Lynette, Tramaine, Joel, all.

  • The new school choirs and ensembles need to take notes. Before there were click tracks and pitch knobs...you had flat foot singers.....I LOVE IT!!!!

  • The lead singer's name is Elaine Kelly

  • WHO IS THAT singing the Lead? She sounds Like Lynnette Hawkins!

  • Phenomenal. True Joy.

  • It's me again! Hallelujah! Thank you Jesus! Sing that song lady! I love this praise song!

  • they don't make music like this no more

  • @deborahgirl1988 true that

  • @deborahgirl1988 i know music now sounds completely different to how it was then :S

  • This is such a beautiful song from when gospel was gospel. I haven't heard it since the 1970's. i enjoyed then and I enjoy it now. Than you for posting this beautiful song.

  • Thank you Jesus! Hallelujah! What a praise! I used to hear this song sung in my gradfather's church. His choir would sing this song each song! Hallelujah! Thank you Jesus! I got to stop typing and start shouting! Hallelujah!

  • What a voice!

  • SING MAMA!!! They DON'T sing like this anymore... 1:42 she gets into it, 1:52 tears it up.... 2:06 show shes can do it and keep it in time...

  • good music. really, good music. soulful.

  • I first heard this song sung by Shirly Harry and Zion Singers. Of course, the Hawkins tore it up originally. Go on feet, keep tapp'in!

  • This music is so inspiring!

  • i love it!

  • Don't yall just love the hair styles and the wardrobe??? Sang!

  • they dont make singers like this anymore....

  • This was the song to obviously follow-up "Oh Happy Day," as a U.S. single and why Buddah/Pavilion didn't issue it will always be a mystery, especially after "Day" achieved #4 pop on Billboard. The same could handily be said about "Early In The Morning" too.

  • I love it.

  • Thanks for the info.

  • That is Elaine Kelley leading...

I wonder where is she now?

  • Elaine now resides in Sacramento California.

  • @tyee2008 : Elaine is my aunt. She lives in Elk Grove. I saw her last week. She's dong great! :)

  • @miznatacha That's great to know that she's doing well. Tell your aunt Ms. Kelley that she is a beautiful woman with one of the most amazing voices around.

  • @miznatacha - really loved yoru aunt's singing ever since I was a boy. Was she able to attend Bishop Hawkins funeral ?

  • Wow this is amazing! Thank you

  • the original version is by the Les Humphries Singers, from 1971

  • This is the original version by Edwin Hawkins. It was recorded in 1968 on the album "Let Us Go Into The House of The Lord" which was later renamed Oh Happy Day. It actually was second in popularity to the hit O Happy Day during the late sixties. This was just a live TV performance that happened to air in 1971. I'm sure there were others who may have recorded it later.

  • Now!this is what I call singing

  • lol. dude on the bongos. Looks like my type of churchin

  • yes i love of the hawkins them are some singing folks

  • this is awesome. bishop hawkins (walter) is my pastor at Love Center in Oakland, CA. we just had church today & they STILL tearing it up. bishop is not only a great singer/songwriter but the best pastor ive ever heard. this man is truly annointed.

  • They are legendary. And that man who introduced them was Johnny Cash. This video clip must be from his variety TV show that ran during the late 1960s / Early 1970s.

A Classic. Thank you for posting this.

  • Wow! Is that Walter in the tenor section on the right behind the lead singer with that HUGE process and BIG part! LOL. And I know that's Tramaine in the center of the soprano section. Can't miss that smile! Wow!

My gospel choir still sings this song from time to time. The good songs NEVER and I repeat NEVER get old. That's why people keep remaking them.

God bless the first family of contemporary gospel music.

    Much Love,

    Shonda

  • I can get my shout on this song!

  • Jesus Chrsist is Lord

  • Wonderful Spiritual Gospel music very moving!!! Thank you so much for posting! Do you have "Follow Me" by the Hawkins Family.

  • wow...wonderful...amazing

  • Just listening to this gets me in such a happy mood. Oh I have loved this song ever since I was seven years old. I love it..I love it!!!

Elaine Kelly...wherever you are, I hope that you are still singing. You just make me want to go to church right now!!!

  • God fearing sing is the best

  • That's the Way Gospel Music should sound Joyful and Awesomely Of the Chain! The reason Lynette Hawkins Stephens sings the way she sings is because Elaine Kelly influenced her! Gospel Singing was very rich obvoiusly in the Hawkins Home! This is one of my All Time Favorites! I think I'm going to bring it Back in tribute to these singers that introduced it to the World!

  • That is real, wonderful spiritual music.

Today's pop owes a huge debt to the gospel and early r'n'b traditions but you do not often hear these artists being credited in the mainstream media.

It is sad that mainstream pop music today is devoid of spiritual meaning, and therefore has come to have little power or significance beyond the immediate thrill of the moment. All you hear is a soulless dilution of what popular music once was.

The executives are cashing in on spiritually bankrupt music.

  • i love the hairstyles!

  • I still say that man at the top in the tenor section is clappin really hard. I know his hands were red in the middle.

  • wow she does sound similar to lynette

  • that was so awesome! elaine sung that!! the choir and music was off the chain too! its amazing how much elaine and lynette sound so much alike! wow!!

  • Okay do I feel that upside down triangular pocket book under my head for a pillow and that short dress above my granma's knees. Do I see she and my aunts with those bee hive wigs and hair dues. LOL. Do I see those cat eye looking black framed glasses. Do I taste butter scotch candy and smell my grandma's shalamar cologne. OMG I was a baby and little boy in the 70's but remember this song. lol

  • Brought back memmories huh? LOL!!!

I don't know what is it with elderly women and butterscotch. That' all the mother's of the church used to give you was nasty butterscotch. YUCK!!!

  • hey all of you,

    come back to Germany!!!

  • Wonderful!! Thank You!

  • Fantastic ! Saw the EHS in 1971 in concert.

    Love Elaine Kelly.

    Thanks for this video .

  • The Hair is Happenin!!

  • lol

  • That guy at the top is clappin his self to death,he act like he's feeling something LOL!!!!!

  • lol

  • I never noticed that man clapping until ur comment... LOL

  • nice

  • I remember when I bought that album. I was about 18y.o., played it to death. Still have it to this day and can appreciate more.

  • FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • They are INCREDIBLE! WOWW!

  • There's a church in Monroe Louisiana that sings this at every funeral they have......Have the entire church shouting!!!!

  • Edwin Hawkins to me was the defining factor in Comtemporary Black Gospel Music. The first comtemporary song I learned on our old upright piano was his 'O Happy Day' at a young age of 7 years old. Thank you for sharing this 1971 version of My Father's House. I also see Walter and Tramaine and the big hair/clothing styles big back happy memories. :-)

  • The release of Edwin Hawkins,' "Oh Happy Day," was the start of contemporary soul Gospel.

  • Wow! How awesome. This is my aunt, Elaine Kelly. My aunt Elaine is still fabulous and beautiful. Sing Aunt Elaine! You go girl!

  • WOW!! Your aunt KILLED this song!!

Took me back to church something CRAZY!!!!

  • I go to Love Center (Walter's church)

Man, do I wish the Love Center Choir would sing this one sunday!!! :)

  • Wow..So good to see them all...It`s hard to believe that this has been almost 37 years ago...I think this was also the same year( 1971) that Walter and Tramaine married...

  • i thought walter and tramaine were brother and sister...Wow..lolol

  • ..wow...

  • is the lead singer singing still alive?

  • yes, she is

  • man they sound good

  • Yeah, Bless you "smallrich" for your amazing clip here. This is marvellous for uprightness in PRAISE. This is truly terrific. I haven't played at the Pentecostal Church in so long, & THIS moves me to go back to OUR Father's house lol. Bless all who enjoy this!!!

  • Man, look at the big hair.....we still kinda have it today too!!

  • Lawd, I still wudn't even born yet!!

  • Gospel music is truly timeless in it's delivery, because IT IS the truth! One can still find this style & fashion feel of Gospel music, in the Pentecostal Church still alive today. I can't even wipe my own head brow when I beat the drums there. lol

  • SOMEwhere out there has to exist tape of their appearance on Engelbert Humperdinck's brief ABC series, which they appeared on in 1970. Morrison was still with choir and she does "Oh Happy Day," then passes the mike to Kelly for this one. As I remember, both performances were unhurried, and Humperdinck gave the group the generous, final slot on the show. We'll really know some joy if this shows up on YouTube!

  • This is from their debut, 1969 album "Let Us Go Into The House Of The Lord," on Pavilion records that also carried "Oh Happy Day." With each television appearance the group shrunk a little more. The liner photo on the back of the LP shows a choir of at least sixty individuals. With Elaine Kelly, Dorothy Combs Morrison, Betty Watson, Margarette Branch and Ruth Lyons also shine as soloists on that debut album. I've never been without a copy.

  • Wo what a performance. That Elaine Kelly is awesome. Thanks for posting.

  • My Pastor is looking like Freddie Prinze in this one!!LOL Love ya, Bishop!!!

  • sometimes i dont people know the value of what they ve done. the hawkins family saved this young girl, anow a woman , life and brought in the christ i needed. the living , real christ. i am still praising him , but you help make him personal to me . thank you is not enough but such as i have give i, share this with peace of god presence . so thank you with all my heart . love you much!

  • this is my favorite song ever! they look and sound so good!! walter think he killin' that song dude.

  • nice, can someone please post (don't you miss that train) from the imagine heaven album.
