  • 4th horn and euphonium are so moving, it almost makes me want to cry(:

  • AT 3:03 I listened to a version from Itunes and the french horns came out of nowhere at around quadruple forte. EARGASM

  • Comment removed

  • I cried when I first played this song, thinking of a friend of mine who killed herself just 3 days before </3

  • I play this so good on my flute(;

  • i swear to god our band director was about to cry during this piece in rehearsal.

  • I played the 2nd trombone part in my high school's wind ensemble last year, and I loved every second of it :)

  • I am playing this at Carnegie Hall in my high school orchestra along with the band and choir on Feburary 29 :D

  • Tubas ftw. XD i play the higher partial of the tuba part. I love this piece btw!

  • A beautiful performance! I was asked by my good friend and conductor of a community band to conduct this piece next week at rehearsal. I can't wait to do it. I only hope I can show the same musical emotion in my conducting as I can with my playing. Again Awesome performance and piece of music.

  • i love this song, my marching band played a version of this, it was awesome!

  • Flute!! It's not a gay instrument, folks! XD Love it!

  • @forglegorktheork it being gay doesn't make it hate-able. . . lol

  • nassua suffolk concert band '12

  • My school is playing this for uil concert and sightreading contest! :D

  • I saw the 27th Lancers win the DCI show in Allentown in 1979 or thereabouts. Gone but not forgotten.

  • Irish tune.....are there words to describe it?

  • I love the flute part.... <3

  • @Melonnutsbeauty FLUTES! :D

  • @DoOdLeBaKa When the flute part starts there is only one flute!!! its solo .... we played it with the orchestra..... ;D

  • @Melonnutsbeauty i played the flute solo at my school! :DDDD

  • Makes me think of the 27th Lancers... and cry.

  • I'm also a euphonium player...love this part.

  • Damn it mrta, now you've made me cry.

  • Of all the pieces I have ever played pr been exposed to, "Irish Tune" is the most beautiful. If this does not move you, check your pulse. Absolutely wonderful.

  • I can never listen to this piece without tears coming to my eye.

  • We played this in band a couple years ago. Grainger was a genius of orchestration and much more.

  • i play the euphonium part, it was so moving!

  • Last year,we played this for a clinician, and he made us sing part of it. All the choir kids from my school in the audience were amazed at how well we could harmonize. But this piece is so gorgeous, it's hard not to in awe of all of it in general. My favorite has to be the French horn part, for sure.

  • Look at all the bandy comments on concertbandland uploads. I think musicians, both pro's and hobbyists, usually make the most appreciative audience for concert and brass band music. A niche genre that's waned over the years despite its popularity in education. This is one piece that trancends prejudice and surgically cuts through the cynical shell most of us protect ourselves with. I guess it is possible for a rapper or pop singer to do that, but not with music alone.

  • I just played this in the last college symphonic band concert. it was enough to make my friend in the audience cry.

  • We read this in band today. I cried!

  • This is the last song my band director conducted before she retired at my end of the year concert. It was so sad. :(

  • Playing this at our Christmas concert (which contains music that is is not Chrisatmas). It's beautiful. This is also the tune that was usedin "You Raise Me Up" by Josh Groban.

  • not a huge fan of grainger. But this is great.

  • 1st Horn. That is all.

  • Playing this in winds ensemble! I absolutely love this piece!

  • @Jetli390 REALLY JEALOUS RINGHT NOW. They played this the year before I got into wind ensemble.

  • @thetempest91 Really?!! Wow, that must suck! Can you make a request?

  • @Jetli390 Well this year balances out since I get to play the clarinet solo in Holst suite in Eb

  • @thetempest91 Oh MY GOSH!!! Now I'M Jealous! THAT IS SO AWESOME!!! ^^

  • Such a beautiful piece of music. It moves me to tears.

  • 4th clarinet is where it's at!

  • Played this song at my last concert. Absolutely fantastic. love it. :)

  • this is the greatest song i have had the priveledge of playing, and evey time i have heard it it makes me think of the first time i heard it.

  • Brassed off?

  • I remember playing this in high school as one of the best euphonium players in the state of Texas my junior year. I wish I still play sometimes because of this piece.

  • Playing this in band class! So psyched!

  • Who was this performed by?

  • Played this is band today!!!! just had to come look it up :)

  • I played this twice, in wind ensemble and at mid-island band festival. our conductor for mid-island did a wonderful job picking out our repertoire. so many parents cried during this piece.

  • i played this last year in wind ensemble. it was such a beautiful piece. there was just so much emotion in it. when my mom heard us in our concert she told me she cryed because it just gave her chills. i love this piece so much and i wish i could play it again!

  • I miss playing music. There was a song I played in either middle school / high school or college by Granger. I believe this was it because I remember my clarinet part....

  • We do play this in the Salem High School Band,

  • Awesome song, but Grainger needs to re-think flute dynamics.

  • My band will be playing this at our state festival in memory of one of our former directors, who was also a mentor to my parents. It's an honor to play Euphonium in his memory.

  • I played first Euphonium in concert band on this piece a couple of years back. Still my all time favorite to play.

  • I've played this song in at least 5-6 different bands.

  • MrTaco, you're grandfather is fortunate to have you as a grandson. Best wishes.

  • I was at county band and we played this.. our director told us to think of one person in our lives that meant the world to us.. like the father to his son in this song..and play it out for that person, like you are singing and telling them good bye. I chose my grandfather, because this is his favorite song in the world. I began to cry as we played this at the festival. When he passes some day, i want to play this for him at his funeral. Think of that one person, Youtube, and never forget them <3

  • @mrtacointhebox The traditional Irish lyrics are about saying goodbye "Oh danny boy, oh danny boy, I love you so..."

  • Brassed Off! That's all I've got to say.

  • we played this beautiful piece wit the NUS-orchestra! i play contrabass! :D

  • I'm working on a concert band piece of my own and i was wondering if the Tuba is able to hit the lowest E on the piano

  • Good to see other 1st Euphonium players here too. Played this piece for Concert Band competition in High School years ago.

  • The West Virginia Youth Symphony Orchestra (in which I am proud tuba player in) played this for our Spring Concert 2011. I was thinking, while playing this: If you close your eyes and listen, it almost sounds like the Sun speaking to the clouds early in a spring morning.

  • NO DISLIKES!!!

i played the last minute of this for an audition and absolutely had to look it up. great piece!

  • Played 1st chair Euphonium for this in Jr. County Band, and then Bassoon when played it in my school band. Simply a beautiful piece!

  • This is probably my FAVOURITE version of this lovely piece of music. Incidentally, nobody believes me when I say it was a Scottish man who composed the music in praise of County Derry in Ireland's oldest province!! And they still won't believe me when I say it was an English man who wrote the words!! I believe he was the same Englishman who wrote MYFAWNY, that beautiful Welsh tune. Danny Boy is an unofficial anthem of All Ireland and it really does unite people. Regards, Des, Dublin.

  • This piece is amazing! I have played it many times with various ensembles!

  • Playing this now in my 7th grade concert band! Go oboe!!!!!

  • going to be playing this solo for trumpet at my next concert. gonna be great

  • Love the Euphonium part

  • @suntim i love this part.

  • @suntim i play the euphonium and im playing this song in honor band

  • This is the LAST song my high school's concert band will ever be performing. I hope that it is as emotional as this recording.

  • aka Danny Boy

  • our teacher tries so hard to make some of us understand the feeling for this peace, by playing some of these chords on the piano and all around me is just lack of caring :( kind of sick of it.

  • @mcainsmaul I agree Its a shame how some kids don't learn to feel music and just learn how to play it because they don't care. my high school has the problem where they hate pieces because they're "too slow".

  • @borntoplay9993 yup. their mentality is: slow song = boring. why am i still here?

  • I played this song on first horn in 9th grade, and we got straight ones also, but it sounds really sad but beautiful at the same time. I honestly cried during my solo.

  • i played this for contest this year and i had the euphonium part and that solo i had at measure 26 was amazing and the locking of the cords there with just me playing the solo was magnificent you could hear me over the band but for some reason it blended really well we made straight ones and concert and sight reading this was one of my favorite songs

  • best chords evar!!

  • I'll be playing the flute solo this May.

  • I'll be playing the flute solo this May.

  • its all about the emotion that you put behind it that makes it touching.

  • Hey yoitsshawnny I would like to remind you its not about the part you play but its about what your heart puts in the play

  • @TranZixXGlobaL well said(:

  • glad to be 1st horn! finally we get a good part(:

  • grauer 2011

  • I wish i could play this song :( i wanna play it really badly. Haha.

  • 0 dislikes. thats how awesome this is.

  • We played this in 7th grade with shepherds hey and we rocked it!!!!!!!!! Go alto and Soprano Saxes

  • were playing this for our spring concert. and im totally pumped. its my favorite piece. they arranged the horn part beautifully.. :D AWESOMEE!!

  • Song is great. My band is playing it. After hearing this, it motivates me to sound like this.

  • This is arguably the best arrangement of Danny Boy and as an Irishman I should know. I've played this hundreds of times with times with various concert bands at concerts and unfortunately at funerals also. But regardless of the occasion I always get a lump in my throat when the brass kick in for the last phrase.

    Fantastic piece of music.

  • @stretcharoonie it's not an arrangement of danny boy. danny boy was created because of this song. the put lyrics to it and then sold it.

  • @CRHurley82 I prefer to be apolitical when it comes to the title of this melody and if you had taken the time to read the uploader's comments you would see that it can be referred to by 3 different titles.

Stop being pedantic and enjoy the music.

  • I play Baritone.:))

  • I'm playin this song for my band.:))

Wind Symphony all the way! :DD

    This song is really beautiful.♥

  • Beautiful piece of music. I wonder how many how many times it has been played , and how many HS & college bands have played it in various venues over the years. We played it in 1959 at the district music festival & again at Spring Concert. Didn't sound as good as this group, but still got a superior for our overall performance.

  • i would love to play this song in band but mine is like vega's up there. my band thinks if a song has simple notes its boring but i think this is the best song i have ever heard.

  • Got to play this on horn in my high school band. I had chills it was so amazing.

  • Tuba part on this is brilliant. I loves me some tuba playing!

Gonna be in Chicago playing this soon, gonna be epic.

  • @CaptainMcMuffin100 "lower octave preferred throughout" When you have a 4 valved instrument and can play a Bb scale (along with most of the other scales) down an octave, its really epic to play some of them down an octave below the lower notes, especially the Bbs, Cs, and Ds. Just adds an extra kick. :)

  • i love this song it is sooo beautiful....and i get to play it FRENCH HORN!!!!!

  • i believe that 118 likes and 0 dislikes says that this song is one of the greatest pieces ever written

  • It makes me so sad that High school will be over for me in two years when we play such beauty as this. Thank you Grainger, music's gift to you was your gift to the world.

  • I love this song I wish we were playing it but we're only playing the second movement.

  • the brass is what makes this piece sounds so amazing and full, erase all the wind parts and it would still sound amazing! the Fhorns and euphoniums/baritones carry the best parts

  • Too much brass? Blasphemy! There's NO SUCH THING. DCI, front row, 50 yard line, baby!! Blow my friggin' hair back!

  • I'm playing this in my high school concert band. Great song. I play the 1st clarinet part and it is awesome! Too bad our upper woodwind section is only 7 strong...too many saxes and brass...

  • did anyone notice how you can hear the song by josh groban in this? "You raise me up, so i can walk on mountains..." blah blah

  • Man we had to play this piece for the Senior grads of 2008... GO Titan Pride!

  • this is most beautiful songg i have ever played in my wind ensemble! i played this for my mom and sister and they were both in tears at the end! its just soo pretty! i lovee it! my band teacher knows how to pick the songss! :P

  • i remember playing this in middle school 5 years ago =)

  • cj wiley played first horn on this piece for his last concert. ahh the high G. it became his best friend. at geroge rogers clark high school class of 2010.

  • 2:28.... trumpets are coming!

  • God my high school band is so upper woodwind heavy there is no beautiful low sound. If we had more low sounds I would be flipping my shit. I play alto sax and the parts we play are just amazing. But everyone doesn't like slow songs so they all half ass it when I'm trying my ass off to produce good sounds

  • I loved playing this, too bad my band in high school didnt care as much as i did.

  • please dont say song, a song has words call it a piece

  • @aspano62 Well, since this piece does have words, it could technically be called a song. The words are about a dying father sending his son off to war, knowing that it is the last time they will ever see one another.

  • @fromwkfsmouth -- Thanks! I actually guessed and got it right!

  • Dude I want my band to play this wonderful piece!!!! I've actually never played it, but I like it because it just sounds so beautiful and emotional. :)

  • -sniff- this is you can say in this way "touching"

  • i have the flute solo for this piece (:

  • @emilyonfirst i have the french horn solo to this peice. its amazing.

  • I had the 4th Horn part for this song back when I was a freshman, and it's funny because I had to bring out my sound the most out of the four (4th part even had the melody in the beginning but not the other three). I really wasn't that good back then and messed up all the important notes a lot, but I wish I had another chance at this song now that I'm taking French Horn a lot more seriously.

  • Who is the band in this recording?

  • @txprphan I believe it's the North Texas Wind Symphony, from the University of North Texas.

  • i had to play this for my band concert. the clarinets had like 33 measures of rest so i had to sit there and listen to like half the song. i was so upset that i couldnt join along with this beautiful song. i love it! 5 STARS

  • I'm going to be playing 1st euphonium for this song in Honor Band this January.

Lol go me.... I guess :p

  • Euphonium has such a dark tone that gives me goosebumps. Such a great instrument.

  • It's not that hard but it sounds amazing in band

  • @berrygoodco No high school concert band could play this song and make it sound like a wind ensemble.

  • @WR2allstar I beg to differ.

  • where can I get the score for this????

  • I was in a band that played this and, being a percussionist, I didn't get to play but yet I still fell in love with this. This is my favorite piece of all time. I can't wait to play this with my kids some day.

  • awesome :)

  • 72 Likes and 0 Dislikes. I think that says it all.

  • my high school wind symphony played this piece and i got the euphonium solo in the beginning....i also aprreciate the people that like the euphonium part btw the euph part is high but so beautiful

  • I'm agreeing with the people below me. This song extremely unique for people who play euphonium. Its a totally different trip then the usual norm. Its SOOOO cool.

  • @DarkBombJoe I think Percy Grainger really liked Euphonium/Baritone. We just played Lincolnshire Posy in my Wind Ensemble and I played the very unique baritone part. I was floating around doubling parts all over the ensemble. I double Horn in movement 2 (my favorite), trumpet in 5, and little parts in the others. There are also three baritone solos in Lincolnshire, one in 3, 4, and 5.

  • dude PPL LISTEN TO ADAGIO FOR STRINGS, RIDE OS THE VALKARYES, ROMEO AND JULIET OVERTURE, CLIRE DE LUNE, IRISH TUNE, AND RHAPSODY IN BLUE ITS MAZING ALL OF EM TOGETHER

  • Im from Oxford Band in Oxford Alabama.. and we are attending the grainger festival in chicago march 13 th i believe and we are playing this as one of our songs.. its amazing.. i love to play this and things that sound like a chorale

  • I play tuba and when the notes come out during this piece every single feeling i have ever felt of joy and love comes out... awesome song this is why i play tuba because of music like this =')

  • i play trumpet but i would have killed to play euphonium specifically for this piece

  • @tptmaster012 so would i

  • Euphonium on this song is probably one of the best experiences for any Euphonium player out there

  • @ky142 I know right! I get the first Euph solo in this song.

  • @Glitch5222 It's Euphonium and Trombone

  • @ky142 agreed i know it was for me

  • I love to play the Euphonium/Trumbone solo. It's beautiful.

  • @chargerfighter1 do euphs play the melody through the whole song? and do we have solo at end

  • @chargerfighter1 baritone sax also has this and the alto sax jumps in in also

  • Such a beautiful and challenging piece. Nice recording. What band is this?

  • i love playing this at band :D

  • I played this throughout my career as a U.S. Army musician. It was a staple of Army concert band literature.

  • Excellent. I usually play that piano solo. I have not heard it played that way before. I have added it to my favourites.

  • brings me back memories of my music school days
