A beautiful performance! I was asked by my good friend and conductor of a community band to conduct this piece next week at rehearsal. I can't wait to do it. I only hope I can show the same musical emotion in my conducting as I can with my playing. Again Awesome performance and piece of music.
Of all the pieces I have ever played pr been exposed to, "Irish Tune" is the most beautiful. If this does not move you, check your pulse. Absolutely wonderful.
Last year,we played this for a clinician, and he made us sing part of it. All the choir kids from my school in the audience were amazed at how well we could harmonize. But this piece is so gorgeous, it's hard not to in awe of all of it in general. My favorite has to be the French horn part, for sure.
Look at all the bandy comments on concertbandland uploads. I think musicians, both pro's and hobbyists, usually make the most appreciative audience for concert and brass band music. A niche genre that's waned over the years despite its popularity in education. This is one piece that trancends prejudice and surgically cuts through the cynical shell most of us protect ourselves with. I guess it is possible for a rapper or pop singer to do that, but not with music alone.
Playing this at our Christmas concert (which contains music that is is not Chrisatmas). It's beautiful. This is also the tune that was usedin "You Raise Me Up" by Josh Groban.
I remember playing this in high school as one of the best euphonium players in the state of Texas my junior year. I wish I still play sometimes because of this piece.
I played this twice, in wind ensemble and at mid-island band festival. our conductor for mid-island did a wonderful job picking out our repertoire. so many parents cried during this piece.
i played this last year in wind ensemble. it was such a beautiful piece. there was just so much emotion in it. when my mom heard us in our concert she told me she cryed because it just gave her chills. i love this piece so much and i wish i could play it again!
I miss playing music. There was a song I played in either middle school / high school or college by Granger. I believe this was it because I remember my clarinet part....
My band will be playing this at our state festival in memory of one of our former directors, who was also a mentor to my parents. It's an honor to play Euphonium in his memory.
I was at county band and we played this.. our director told us to think of one person in our lives that meant the world to us.. like the father to his son in this song..and play it out for that person, like you are singing and telling them good bye. I chose my grandfather, because this is his favorite song in the world. I began to cry as we played this at the festival. When he passes some day, i want to play this for him at his funeral. Think of that one person, Youtube, and never forget them <3
The West Virginia Youth Symphony Orchestra (in which I am proud tuba player in) played this for our Spring Concert 2011. I was thinking, while playing this: If you close your eyes and listen, it almost sounds like the Sun speaking to the clouds early in a spring morning.
This is probably my FAVOURITE version of this lovely piece of music. Incidentally, nobody believes me when I say it was a Scottish man who composed the music in praise of County Derry in Ireland's oldest province!! And they still won't believe me when I say it was an English man who wrote the words!! I believe he was the same Englishman who wrote MYFAWNY, that beautiful Welsh tune. Danny Boy is an unofficial anthem of All Ireland and it really does unite people. Regards, Des, Dublin.
our teacher tries so hard to make some of us understand the feeling for this peace, by playing some of these chords on the piano and all around me is just lack of caring :( kind of sick of it.
@mcainsmaul I agree Its a shame how some kids don't learn to feel music and just learn how to play it because they don't care. my high school has the problem where they hate pieces because they're "too slow".
I played this song on first horn in 9th grade, and we got straight ones also, but it sounds really sad but beautiful at the same time. I honestly cried during my solo.
i played this for contest this year and i had the euphonium part and that solo i had at measure 26 was amazing and the locking of the cords there with just me playing the solo was magnificent you could hear me over the band but for some reason it blended really well we made straight ones and concert and sight reading this was one of my favorite songs
This is arguably the best arrangement of Danny Boy and as an Irishman I should know. I've played this hundreds of times with times with various concert bands at concerts and unfortunately at funerals also. But regardless of the occasion I always get a lump in my throat when the brass kick in for the last phrase.
@CRHurley82 I prefer to be apolitical when it comes to the title of this melody and if you had taken the time to read the uploader's comments you would see that it can be referred to by 3 different titles.
@CRHurley82 I prefer to be apolitical when it comes to the title of this melody and if you had taken the time to read the uploader's comments you would see that the tune can be referred to by three different names. Stop being pedantic and enjoy the music.
Beautiful piece of music. I wonder how many how many times it has been played , and how many HS & college bands have played it in various venues over the years. We played it in 1959 at the district music festival & again at Spring Concert. Didn't sound as good as this group, but still got a superior for our overall performance.
i would love to play this song in band but mine is like vega's up there. my band thinks if a song has simple notes its boring but i think this is the best song i have ever heard.
i wish my band would play this song... but my band is exactly like Vega's up there. they all think simple notes are boring. if you ask me this is one of the best songs i have ever heard.
@CaptainMcMuffin100 "lower octave preferred throughout" When you have a 4 valved instrument and can play a Bb scale (along with most of the other scales) down an octave, its really epic to play some of them down an octave below the lower notes, especially the Bbs, Cs, and Ds. Just adds an extra kick. :)
It makes me so sad that High school will be over for me in two years when we play such beauty as this. Thank you Grainger, music's gift to you was your gift to the world.
the brass is what makes this piece sounds so amazing and full, erase all the wind parts and it would still sound amazing! the Fhorns and euphoniums/baritones carry the best parts
I'm playing this in my high school concert band. Great song. I play the 1st clarinet part and it is awesome! Too bad our upper woodwind section is only 7 strong...too many saxes and brass...
this is most beautiful songg i have ever played in my wind ensemble! i played this for my mom and sister and they were both in tears at the end! its just soo pretty! i lovee it! my band teacher knows how to pick the songss! :P
cj wiley played first horn on this piece for his last concert. ahh the high G. it became his best friend. at geroge rogers clark high school class of 2010.
God my high school band is so upper woodwind heavy there is no beautiful low sound. If we had more low sounds I would be flipping my shit. I play alto sax and the parts we play are just amazing. But everyone doesn't like slow songs so they all half ass it when I'm trying my ass off to produce good sounds
@aspano62 Well, since this piece does have words, it could technically be called a song. The words are about a dying father sending his son off to war, knowing that it is the last time they will ever see one another.
Dude I want my band to play this wonderful piece!!!! I've actually never played it, but I like it because it just sounds so beautiful and emotional. :)
I had the 4th Horn part for this song back when I was a freshman, and it's funny because I had to bring out my sound the most out of the four (4th part even had the melody in the beginning but not the other three). I really wasn't that good back then and messed up all the important notes a lot, but I wish I had another chance at this song now that I'm taking French Horn a lot more seriously.
i had to play this for my band concert. the clarinets had like 33 measures of rest so i had to sit there and listen to like half the song. i was so upset that i couldnt join along with this beautiful song. i love it! 5 STARS
I was in a band that played this and, being a percussionist, I didn't get to play but yet I still fell in love with this. This is my favorite piece of all time. I can't wait to play this with my kids some day.
my high school wind symphony played this piece and i got the euphonium solo in the beginning....i also aprreciate the people that like the euphonium part btw the euph part is high but so beautiful
I'm agreeing with the people below me. This song extremely unique for people who play euphonium. Its a totally different trip then the usual norm. Its SOOOO cool.
@DarkBombJoe I think Percy Grainger really liked Euphonium/Baritone. We just played Lincolnshire Posy in my Wind Ensemble and I played the very unique baritone part. I was floating around doubling parts all over the ensemble. I double Horn in movement 2 (my favorite), trumpet in 5, and little parts in the others. There are also three baritone solos in Lincolnshire, one in 3, 4, and 5.
dude PPL LISTEN TO ADAGIO FOR STRINGS, RIDE OS THE VALKARYES, ROMEO AND JULIET OVERTURE, CLIRE DE LUNE, IRISH TUNE, AND RHAPSODY IN BLUE ITS MAZING ALL OF EM TOGETHER
Im from Oxford Band in Oxford Alabama.. and we are attending the grainger festival in chicago march 13 th i believe and we are playing this as one of our songs.. its amazing.. i love to play this and things that sound like a chorale
I play tuba and when the notes come out during this piece every single feeling i have ever felt of joy and love comes out... awesome song this is why i play tuba because of music like this =')
my band is playing this on our fall concert.. its a pretty nicee song.. all though its gonnah be kindah tough playing high g's a's and b flats piano.. im on the euphonium part.. i knw i cann do it tho.. im ready..
4th horn and euphonium are so moving, it almost makes me want to cry(:

i had to play this for my band concert. the clarinets had like 33 measures of rest so i had to sit there and listen to like half the song. i was so upset that i couldnt join along with this beautiful song. i love it! 5 STARS

I played this song 12 years ago as a freshman in college...also played the euphonium. I still have the tape from the concert...

Euphonium has such a dark tone that gives me goosebumps. Such a great instrument.

It's not that hard but it sounds amazing in band

@berrygoodco No high school concert band could play this song and make it sound like a wind ensemble.

I was in a band that played this and, being a percussionist, I didn't get to play but yet I still fell in love with this. This is my favorite piece of all time. I can't wait to play this with my kids some day.

I played this throughout my career as a U.S. Army musician. It was a staple of Army concert band literature.

Excellent. I usually play that piano solo. I have not heard it played that way before. I have added it to my favourites.
