Minnesota won the Big 10. This was in the day when a team had to win your league to get to the NCAA tournament. Dave Winfield went unpunnished and into the the Baseball Hall of Fame and is thought to be a great guy. Ever apologize Dave?

I was there. The refs had lost control of the game. OSU had been mugging MN g. Kieth Nix (the 1 white starter) all game, including Witte's nasty elbow to his head at halftime. I was watching Winfield during the mellee, in what looked like a straight-up fist-fight on the opposite end of the court from Witte. There was plenty of film and 20,000 witnesses, so if Winfield had done anything wrong he would have been suspended. Taylor, who kneed Witte, and Behagen, who stomped him, were just thugs tho.
The thing that I never understood about this incident was why wasn't it that Corky Taylor wasn't criminally charged for his actions? This film clip clearly proves that he committed felonious assault, especially with him stomping on Witte after the latter was down and unconscious (which I thought was cowardly on Taylor's part). That thug Taylor should have did some time in jail, and this is coming from a black guy.

I was nine years old when this incident happened and somehow happened to see a clip of it on television. I can remember feeling horrified by what I was seeing. I probably didn’t know the words depraved and sinister at the time; but that was definitely the feeling state. I had long forgotten about this, but as an adult came across this video and still feel as shocked and appalled as I did at the age of nine.
the idiot referees clearly lost control of the game. every time there is a big fight, it is an indication that the refs lost control, and they should be suspended (or fired) and fined as well, if not put in federal prisons...

I left for USAF Basic Training about 5 weeks after this incident. About 1/3 of us in our Training Flight were from Minnesota and about an equal amount from Ohio. I was ashamed to admit I was a Gopher fan and everyone pretty much agreed it was the worst display of Sportsmanship they'd ever seen

most of the players who actually get on court/field to play are black, violent crimes committed by whites aren't heavily by covered media outlets, and being blacks for the most part grow up in conditions that are less privileged than whites which means they are pre-disposed to violence as it is part of their upbringing. An upbringing which leads to less opportunities for advancement and stereotyping at the hands of people in power positions, making the cycle likely repeat itself.

I was nine years old when this incident happened and somehow happened to see a clip of it on television. I can remember feeling horrified by what I was seeing. I probably didn’t know the words depraved and sinister at the time; but that was definitely the feeling state. I had long forgotten about this, but as an adult came across this video and still feel as shocked and appalled as I did at the age of nine.

It was Ron Behagen who stomped a helpless Luke Witte as he lay on the floor. Winfield attacked Buckeye player Mark Wagar, punching him in the face five times as a Minnesota "fan" held Wagar's arms. I saw the whole disgusting thing on live TV back in Columbus, It was MUCH worse than this short video shows. We could not believe the "slap on the wrist" punishment accorded Minnesota. And Winfield was recently named a "Big Ten Icon" (No. 15 of 50) - apparently time heals all wounds . Not for me!

And while I agree that those three players should have served time for what they did, let's leave race out of it. Bill Musselmann, the Minnesota coach, should have been liable for failing to control his players.

I left for USAF Basic Training about 5 weeks after this incident. About 1/3 of us in our Training Flight were from Minnesota and about an equal amount from Ohio. I was ashamed to admit I was a Gopher fan and everyone pretty much agreed it was the worst display of Sportsmanship they'd ever seen

I had heard that Dave Winfield was involved only a few years ago here on YT and Wiki with this incident. Has he ever appologized? I wrote somewhere else about this on his speech at University of Virginia, but it was strangely not their when I went to look. He admitted in his talk to not being perfect, and certainly it was a long time ago. But it seems to me he has never been held accountable.

most of the players who actually get on court/field to play are black, violent crimes committed by whites aren't heavily by covered media outlets, and being blacks for the most part grow up in conditions that are less privileged than whites which means they are pre-disposed to violence as it is part of their upbringing. An upbringing which leads to less opportunities for advancement and stereotyping at the hands of people in power positions, making the cycle likely repeat itself.

Fights arent just for aggression either. They are used as tactics to get certain players ejected or as a show of force, which is usually the case. so... your point makes little sense
