Ahh Fosse we miss the trademark strength and upraised shoulders. Murder to dance though, I don't wonder she got arthritis, I've had more injuries doing fosse than classical ballet!
What an amazing number. I'm in this show right now, and it's not in the score we have, so the girl who is playing Sally requested it and so we put i back in! I'm soooo happy. One of my favorite songs.
I remember watching this when it first came out. I had forgotten just how powerful a performer Liza was. I haven't/hadn't followed her much, despite being a friend of Dorothy's. Her dancing and singing was strong and powerful. I'm glad I landed on this page and got a reminder.
when i see you perform i get goose bumps of joy. lord, you are a great performer. take care of yourself and watch the people around you. you are too prescious to lose. i love you. jo ann
Imagine what it would have been like if Ann Reinking were dancing the part. I wish there could be an imaginary combination of Liza's voice and Reinking's fantastic shimmys and shoulders and arm and hand movements. I've just been watching Reinking in some videos and Liza looks stiff and not sexy at all in comparison. But she has a wonderful face and voice.
Sally Bowles was an amateur and so Fosse and Liza deliberately made her performance the stiff, jerky, over-exuberent gestures of an enthusiastic exhibitionist who'd never had a dance lesson. Liza permanently damaged her back doing those moves.
@custardaghost What are you talking about! if you are a dancer or not there is nothing there that will injure her back . As for stiff and jerky! i think you mean stylised , that was Bob Fosse!!
@luvmykids71 (Now Dame) Judi Dench (in her pre- dowager empress era) won a Tony for her 1966 Broadway Sally Bowles. Wonder if any clips are on YouTube or elsewhere?
Hey stargazers haven't read King Lear - Edmund's soliloquy? You know the one that goes, 'this is the excellent foppery of the world that when we are knaves, thieves and vagabonds etc etc ... we lay our goatish disposition on the charge of a star
That was 400 odd years ago and we still believe in star signs! Ps I am Pisces so I believe that particular analysis lol
@jnmklo9 "Thou Nature art my goddess! to thy laws my services are bound. Wherefor should I stand in the plague of custom, as the curiosity of nations reasons it thus & thus, for that I am but 12 or 14 moonshines lag . . . ?" Shagspear the superstar Elizabethan 1 dramaturge 4ever !
Strangely this song wasn't in the original Broadway version. It was written for the film. Another interesting thing about this phenomenal film is that Bob Fosse requested that the females in the cast didn't shave their armpits. A few didn't but most couldn't do it including Liza! Bob Fosse was an incredible talent!!!
Always been one of my favorite pieces of Bob Fosse's. Amazing work, plus it was a small stage. Liza's terrific. She's looking good too. She was Drop Dead Diva with Delta Burke as physic sisters. They both looked good.
She and Joel Gray were great in this. But think Bob Fosse's direction was the real force here. Is my favorite musical too, and one of two that works, without seeming too contrived, in this millenium. The other is Chicago, which made a few musical light weights look respectable.
Caberet, is just fantastic! My favorite musical by a long shot...Joel Grey and Liza were amazing! Dark, twisted, and sweet and tender.....art imitates life....just wonderful!
In the special features of the Cabaret DVD Liza said that Alice Cooper was talking to her he may have even called her up, gushed all over her then he thanked her for his career. I believe this scene had everything to do with it.
Sorry I clicked on the wrong "thumbs" - meant to click on the "thumbs UP"!
Anyway, anyone who's truly appreciative of Liza's incredible talent, should watch "That's Entertainment" (the original part one). On it is Liza saying words that will last forever... "Thank God for film. You can capture a moment and have it last forever..."
Jesus, give her a break. She has arthritis, 3 hip replacements and that was more than a decade ago and she is still performing.
Not to long ago, Liza also had surgery on her damaged vocal chords which was the same surgery that caused Julie Andrews to loose her singing voice. Oh, and she has had several surgeries to repair her knees.
When you have done work as such as this, you better have achieved something big before passing comment. Little she has done since has matched Cabaret, but a it is a fine piece of work that will be remembered long after we are forgotten. We should be thankful for being given this.
@OneoftheImmortals I agree with you, but for the future it's LOSE. You LOSE weight, you LOSE your singing voice. Loose....means something else, unfortunately.
@OneoftheImmortals And in 2000 Liza had viral meningitis that boded to cost her her ability to speak. A triumphal catapult back from that! In Cabaret, her singing and dancing were sui generis (unique) miracles of inspired acting, melodiousness, flawlessly executed rhythmic precision and limberness. An eternal joy!
@OneoftheImmortals Not to mention she had encephalitis not long ago. Most people who get encephalitis barely walk again, let alone learn to dance and sing again in their sixties and continue putting on sell-out shows.
She is amazing here. She is only as old as Cher, and if she had Cher's trainer, she would still be a superstar. C'mon Liza, the world is missing out on still seeing this kind of performance.
@christiv3 I don't think it's so much their trainer rather than their lifestyle choices. artistically speaking (NOT using the term "artist" liberally) Cher is/was much less gifted than Liza, but maybe for that reason, Cher kept amazingly focused on her carreer with amaing discipline (kinda like Madonna) decade after decade; while Liza has had a tough time with substance abuse throughout her life.
Indeed Cher is a Taurus- They are incrediable hardworking people and finicailly driven. And Madonna a virgo is also very simliar.

@ChilenoPiscean22 Great & original insight! Just a correction though: Madonna is a hardcore Leo (we share b-days: Aug/16); and yes, when Leos have a goal in mind we get extremely passionate about it and get there through commitment and discipline. We're also known for a taste for the "finer things" in life too, and being the center of attention can be almost addictive...
