@mcavic - true, that was the way it was originally "sold." I'm 35. Assuming I never saved a penny toward retirment, do you honestly think SS will be the answer to my finances when I retire (at age 72)? Wake up people! BIG GOVERNMENT wants you to "need" them. It's what keeps the politicians in office and money in their (not your) pocket. We desperately need to return to a government FOR THE PEOPLE, NOT FOR ITSELF.
For some people, Social Security is the greatest thing since slavery. They pay NOTHING into it, but collect tens of thousands of dollars off the backs of those who are FORCED to pay into it. For others, they are FORCED to pay into it for DECADES, but never get the chance to collect a SINGLE PENNY out of it....INVOLUNTARY SERVITUDE at its very best!
It's yet ANOTHER immoral, fake "entitlement" that's DESTROYING personal responsibility, personal initiative, and America itself from within.
Fine chick but this is really stupid. It doesn't just spend it on retirees, it gives it to poor people. Poor people are not allowed to walk freely and naturally pick fruit off the trees, their own government stops them. So the government has to pay something in return or they will starve to death and from the cold.
And yes, it would be a crime to swipe money from the Social Security fund without paying it back, but if it is paid back with interest, that would be great for SS. Let's be fair and point to the real problems instead of just bashing the system.
Don't cry about Social Security "taking money from workers". That's the whole point: to be mandatory, so that people who don't save a penny their whole life will still have some kind of retirement, lest they end up on the street.
I learned today that the first time it was implemented - the age limit of 65 was the expected life span of the average American it intended to support. Guess what age that support level kicked in at? 65. Giant vacuum cleaner for American income... to be put in a slush fund, to be "borrowed against". You're right on, Michelle!
Social Security is the closest thing that we have here in America to some sort of social rights that are basically non-existant. Social Security is a victim of its own success. Because it collected so much money, our elected officials have used the extra money to fund other projects that they think are for the good of America. The solution is to elect people of virtue and to be active politically, and not to take cheap shots at a system that is a marvel of democracy in America.

@Projectionist101 - Not nearly as hollow as your comment. What part is tripe, and why?

Fortunately for us, you're not an American, so your opinion is inconsequential.

FACTS only Ron Paul seems to understand:
300 million Americans.
138 million WORKING Americans.
21 million of those are GOVERNMENT employees.
60 million on Social Security.
48 million collecting some type of Welfare.
2 million in prison or jail...etc.
What percentage of a population can feed at the public trough before that society collapes?
