adam, i thank you and greatly appreciate ALL the videos you post! and you are right, it's not for pleasing someone else. it's for others enjoyment. i really dont understand why ppl have to be so rude. God bless adam!
Thank you very much! I don't understand why some ppl have to be so rude either especially on Christian music videos. I guess we will always run into some people where civility is just not a part of their lifestyle. Thank you for the support and for watching and enjoying these videos!
People, people, people, Tim Riley IS the best bass singer ever, but GET A FREAKIN CLUE. This is some numbnuts with a bass-boost knob that's giving the low frequencies a gigantic boost when (I'm guessing) they think it's needed. It's so ridiculously amateur -- any professional engineer would be horrified by the overwhelming bass imbalance. Compare to the original recordings and you'll see. Somebody's got too little brains and too much technology.
And your a jerk with a big mouth. This was done intentionally you idiot! This was done for the sole purpose to hear the frequency not to please you or some stupid music engineer. I have been mixing and editing music most of my life so I know how to do it right when I need to. I wanted the notes to be heard loudly and clearly. Hey you put a video together and post it if you think your so smart!! The technology I have is a free version of audacity..MORON!!!!!!!!!
@thebassmanadam Ooops, I engineered some of Gold City's (and similar artists') recordings, so I've "put together" a few, uh, gold records. Some of my work has suffered your EQ job.
Since you "know how to do it right when [you] need to", you're saying this is not "how to do it right." I agree.
If you're not concerned with pleasing listeners and "stupid music engineers", audio engineering might not be the career for you.
I saw your last post before you removed it and to be clear, I am not a music engineer but could do it if I wanted too. Give me 4 vocals and I will mix them just fine. Again, I did this on purpose to hear the bassy part. If you mixed any of those songs which I strongly doubt than you know the bass part lacks the bassy sound A-Capella music is known for. Look up the group Acappella and Vocal Union for proof.
NO, it says comment removed and the other says flagged as spam? I don't mind disagreeing with others opinions but I don't remove the comments. Either you did by accident or someone else did. To my video about my nieces, not sure how you can complain about that as I did no bass boosting to my voice in that video.

I'm listening to this with good headphones and each time Tim starts singing low notes, I can hear that the audio is amplified significantly and that he's singing very close to the microphone (lots of popping). I kinda spoils it for me. I'm sure he has a super bass voice but pushing it this low (below low D) is too much for me if it requires electronic gimmickry to be heard.
Please understand that what you're hearing is something the uploader has enhanced the audio with. You wouldn't be hearing that if you were listening to the original mix put out by Gold City. I would know because I, too, own the cd's/albums that the uploader got this audio clips from. Listen to some other videos of Gold City with Tim Riley. You won't be let down.
@MrSoundman90 You can use any audio editing program with frequency filtering, like Audacity. You jut have to determine the frequency window of the pitches of the bass, roughly 60Hz ( = A1) to 120Hz ( = A2), and increase power on that particular frequency band. Since the bass is the only one producing sound in that frequency band, you'll boost the bass.
Haha! I remember hearing the acappella album (not the Christmas album) back in the early to mid and 90's. Until that time I thought that Rodney Britt and my great friend Wes McKinzie were the greatest basses. Tim Riley is simply a beast. The quality of these recordings demonstrate this. Forget the exact pitches...listen to the power/resonance of these notes. I'd put him up against any russian bass...does he really need a mic?
@thebassmanadam Regarding Wes they will soon. They've already released a single "Walls fall down" and their album should be out in a couple of months or so. No doubt Riley can hang with the Russians. I think Rodney Britt could too in terms of vocal timbre.
Ok, my crazy self was listening to this on some headphone (the big studio type) but minimized to go back to something i was reading. When i heard that "OH" at 2:55 it scared me a lil, lol.
lol so heres my story. i had some gay ass ipod headphones and i heard this, im like damn this guy is a beast, now i bought bass headphones, like the rubber ones that u stick inside ur ears, and i heard this again, and his notes are so powerfull that made my freaking head vibrate, even my mom got scared, she thought he was burping lol. Great video!!!!
I'm not sure what you're doing to amplify the bass part in this video, but it doesn't sound good. It is often off pitch, which tells me it's not Tim's voice. It actually covers up Tim's voice, and takes away from the video. I would recommend taking that part off. Sorry if I sound rude, just trying to help.
Don't know what to tell you. Its Tim's voice! Who else would it be! all I did was a bass boost in a music soft wear to bring out the low tones. If it sounds off pitch then I would say your not hearing it right. A bass boost is not going to sour a note if its on pitch without it. I just brought out the color of the note. To each there own is what I say. Some may like it, some may not.
Well, it sounds kind of artificial to me. I understand what you're trying to do, I just think it takes away from Tim's voice. When you blast the bass part, it covers up the true tone of Tim's voice. I now understand that it is Tim's voice. You're just changing the "soundboard settings" of Tim's voice by turning up the bass knob that creates a sound that does not match the identity of Tim's voice.
btw, I was wrong. It actually is on pitch, it just sounds funky in some places.
I can understand why it sounds funny! Your use to hearing it a certain way then someone changes it. It sounded different to me at first after I did that but I liked it. I love the tone in a basses voice but I love the bass sound just as much. The idea was to bring out the bass because often time in a song with instruments its just the tone we hear. A-capella music allows us to hear the bass sound as well. Like I said, it appeals to some and not others. I like a bass's voice either way
Go to the Singingnews YouTube account of Tim doing a sound check, that's about as low as you'll hear him.He says he can make lower "noises" but in Tim's book that's all they are...he certainly isn't going to try that stuff on stage, leave that to Mike Holcombe and others. Btw bassmanadam, the bass enhancement works great, many thanks.
@lowluvver Oh yeah I've actually seen that. He gets an F#1 in that clip. I was actually asking about how low he could get while still being able to project without a microphone (like a basso profundo). Youtuber hugedell told me he can likely project a C2 really well with no mic, and he could do okay projecting an A1 or B1 without a mic. Is this really where his limit is for singing loudly or can he do it lower?
Also, would you happen to know how much, if any, bass boost they use on Tim's mic?
hugedell's likely spot on with the C2, some other Bass i think EB said somewhere that Tim didn't need to stand as close to the mic as he did,his voice was so powerful.I can vouch for that as he was standing behind me at the NQC(I didn't know he was there)when he spoke to someone in normal speaking voice and i nearly jumped out of my skin it was so loud, deep and powerful.
@lowluvver Thanks for the info. I'm guessing he could still do the B or the A, maybe a G (just not as much as the C) decently loud (enough to be heard somewhat in a choir on a medium to loud part). Am I correct in assuming this?
That's also cool he was at NQC. I'm gonna try and go see them when they come to California this May. Maybe I'll get a chance to hear his voice in person then.
@lowluvver Hey man, I actually saw Gold City yesterday and I asked Tim Riley afterwards when I met him. He said he doesn't do choir stuff, but he said probably around a Bb1 is the lowest he could project. He also said he wasn't sure about how audible it would be in a choir as he hasn't done choir before, but he sang a Bb1 for me comfortably at around conversation level, so I'm thinking his guess was correct.
@lowluvver Thanks for the response tho. I actually agree that in most cases, really low notes aren't always practical. Tim hit an E1 at NQC 2009 with Eric Bennett on stage, but it sounded more like a mixed voice (i.e. some vocal fry, some full voice). It sounds rough for clear singers like Tim.
For singers with more bass to their voice, these people can hit down to about D1 in full voice (or a few notes off the piano in JD's case), but lower than F1 almost starts to be too muddy in their case.
i would like to know the titles of these songs in order

According to a friend of mine who's heard Tim many times in concert, Tim doesn't need a mic. i think he could match any Russian bass easily.
