I've gotten greedy plenty of times. I don't steal anymore, but I've made off with 2 airsoft guns, 3 BB guns (pistols), a BB/pellet rifle, a 20-pack of CO2 cartridges, an external hard drive, 3 packs of pellets, a pack of BB's, and a pack of airsoft BB's.

...Needless to say, I was sketched beyond belief, attracted a lot of attention with all of the noise the BB's were making, and had to walk with a stiff leg because of the BB/pellet rifle.

I disobeyed my own rule, I felt i was being watched, and instead of putting the merchandise back, I tried to leave. See they can't touch you till you walk past the point of sale. So if you ever think you're being watched, leave it in the store. And no I didn't get caught by the scanners at the door. I was simply and cleverly being watched. I got off with a warning though. No biggie. =)

The most obvious one was called "staging", which is where he selected merchandise and then placed it in a different spot so he could come back to it. Once he did this, he was already caught. Yes, it's easier to steal it when you can just reach for it instead of ducking down, but it's also extremely easy to see because people don't do that when they are buying it

Locally we had a team to try this at Walmart and one guy went into the store and unhooked a flat screen tv (display) and later his buddy was going to get grab it and run, so they went to the next store and shoplifted and the guy that unhooked the tv got caught and his buddy ran and let him get caught alone so the first guy turned on his buddy and he told security in the 2nd store and they called Walmart and WM security was waiting for him , they both ended up spending the night in jail.

Ours is a little different, 1)enter the area/section, 2)approach, 3)selection, 4)concealment, 5)passing all points of sale ,6)exiting the store, and arrest. We use these steps, even though they don't have to leave the store, under our states law. Last year alone, my company's Undercover Loss Prevention Agents caught 3,700+, shoplifters in our state.
