The fundmentals of our economy are strong vs. fundamentals of our economy are sound is a distinction without a difference.
It's not a "gotcha" on my part, it's rank hypocrisy on Obama's part. He travelled the country for months saying you can't trust someone who believes the fundamentals of economy are strong to handle the economy. I'm going to follow his advice.

He did not say the economy is strong...
He did not say: "the fundamentals of our economy are sound"
He said "we are going to focus on the fundamentally sound aspects of the economy"
If you think by that he means the "economy is good" you are completely misrepresenting the statement.
They both talked about the fundamentals of the economy are sound. You think McCain is an idiot for saying it, and you think Obama is a genious for saying the same thing.
Even though he's talking shit, they ARE misconstruing his words. The ECONOMY is in crisis but the FUNDAMENTALS are strong. Why is it so fuckin hard to keep that straight? It looks bad when he has to correct them

George Bush has been saying the same thing. So the other day when he again made this statement, it turned out to be a very stupid thing to say while Wall St. was spiraling downward. And These Euro trash just stands there and wait for us to crumble. Not even giving us some help, but criticism. No Fuck this! American should stop helping others and stop helping our self!
Obviously he's a big time bullshitter. However here are ideas. How about America demanding a monetary recall from all those two bit worldwide Hunyak countries we've been shtupping for eons? I mean why can't the Europeans, for instance, get together, go into their Euro pools and come up with the billions we need? They owe us, don't they? Why continue foreign aid? It amounts to billions/yearly. Let the muthas fend for themselves. Why stay in Iraq at a cost of 10 bil/month? I'm fundamentally right.
when youre economy crumbles communism will take over and at last everyone will be equal and the united states will be destroyed. the soviet union will return with more power than before and more influence.
If he really meant that the fundamentals are our workers in the first place, in his speech he should've said something along the lines of "our worker morale is strong". This is just damage control for something he realizes doesn't fit in.
Aren't banks considered one of the fundamentals of an economy? And as for Americans being the most productive: "Norwegians lead the world with an output of $38 per hour worked last year. French workers were in second place, averaging $35 an hour, the report said. Belgians were third at $34, followed by Americans at $32." But Americans have more output because they work more hours in a year.
John, you're not fooling anyone. His original acclamation of "the fundamentals..." was really just his reluctance to admit that this crisis is the fault of his Republican party's failure. But when he realized what a bonehead thing that was to say, he just changed his definition. His original statement is a continuation of the same message he's been saying all year. Numerous times this year he's said, "the fundamentals of our economy are strong". Did he mean American workers then as well?
YES! The American Worker is the most productive, innovative, & industrious Also meaning CONSCIENTIOUS & DILIGENT. So where does this define the Greedy & Corrupt CEOs McCain mentions? Are they not American Workers? Is the US now sending the tasks of our Investment Banks oversees or Third World countries to control the largest US mortgage institutions? Or are the greedy & corrupt CEOs not considered American workers anymore illegally working in the US?
RIGHT! he must think we're all morons. We are the 'premiminent economy for a long, long time'????!!?!? is he high? we're the preeminent CONSUMERS for a long time!
McCain didn't mean "the American workers" when he first said it. It's something they made up afterward to do damage control. "And if you think the U.S. economy is in the crapper, you must be against THE AMERICAN WORKER." See how that works? It's disingenuous as hell, of course.
If Obama wants to play, he should "interpret" McCain as pinning the economy on the American workers, and "rush to their defense." The American workers are not to blame for this economy, Mr. McCain! See how that works?
The economy is supported by the productive American workers who pays all the taxes and our American govt. now bails out corrupt mortgage banks run by greedy & corrupt CEO's. Thats the new definition for patriotism in the US. McCain says he has faith in the American worker so Im guessing we have corrupt and greedy illegal aliens or Martians controlling the biggest Investment Banks in the United States. ;) Aren't these corrupt CEO's American workers too?
If the fundamentals of our economy are so strong then why is our Federal govt. bailing out the largest investment banks in the US? McCain has faith in the American workers because they will be the ones paying the higher taxes for those so called greedy and corrupt CEO's.
Go Matt Lauer...Make him repeat it again ;) Hes got this line memorized by heart and doesnt even need a teleprompter.
US just made History againThe free market Capitalism just turned to Socialism in less than a week.
At risk of sounding unpatriotic but we clearly are not the most productive workers in the world, otherwise all our labels would say "made in america" lol.
Wow, the endless war on iraq, the U.S economy is dropping, The U.S dollar is losing it's value, loss of jobs, houses and many american going into debt, Globel warming, Loss of prestige in the white house,, All under the watch of Bush and the repulican party...Do we really need another 4 years of this.
I'm confident that true red white and blue patriotic Americans aren't stupid enough to vote for McCain/Palin! These two are simply embarrassing. I'm a disillusioned Republican and I'm totally embarrassed that we screwed up the last eight years and now we trot these two out??? I gotta say vote Obama/Biden to save this country from ruin. Sarah Palin one hearbeat away from being the leader of the free world..OOOOMMMMMGGGGG!!!!
I can't wait to see the debates. I think America will finally realize that despite their fears and prejudices, Obama is the right candidate to pull America back to it's former greatness and beyond. Again, Obama's poll numbers are leading and now Palin's numbers are declining. I think after the debates, there will be no doubt who is better capable to represent the American people and this great nation. No more lies, No more Bush, No more Rupublican trash!!! Save America!!! Vote Obama/Biden 08'
LOL.....REPUBS ARE TRULY PIGS FOR THE EXCEPTION OF REAGAN... AND THEIR FOLLOWERS ARE ASS WIPES HOW DO YOU DEFEND SOMETHING LIKE THAT AND SPIN AROUND AND FIND A WAY TO BLAME OBAMA FOR THE ECONOMY AND GAS PRICES WHEN THE GUYS ISN'T EVEN THE PRESIDENT
"Obama's financial advisers are former Fannie Mae and Lehman Brothers' crooks"
You are liars even the media has shown that this is no true and the person they were refering to has said HE DID NOT ADVISE OR IT IS PART OF THE OBAMA STAFF.
If you want to look for an excuse to vote for McCain just to cover that you are racist or you earn more than 250,000, just keep it for yourself and do not poison other people.
Hope one day you can deal with your racist feeling. It is not too late for U.S
C'mon, look at that head move at 2:04 and the smirk at the end after the pointless yet funnily worded interjection. It's shtick. He's trying to lose this thing by coming off as senile. His health can't take 4 years of the White House, he'd be handed a huge fucking by Bush, and he probably has very good reasons for wanting to stick it to his party. Why put the trouble and effort into running a serious campaign at this point and only MAYBE win in November? The GOP asked for this. Fuck 'em.
"Even with volatility this is still a place people want to put their money. This is a very stable democracy with a fundamental economy which has been damaged now but which we expect to come back."
In 2003 President Bush wanted to regulate Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac but trying to protect the welfare loan program of Bill Clinton, the Democrats blocked it. Barney Frank stated "These two entities, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, are not facing any kind of financial crisis".
What the hell is McCain talking about? Its true that greed had partial part in the financial mess but its not the main cause of it, its the lack of regulation that started this mess in which McCain supported deregulation in the first place. If he becomes our president then GOD HELP US ALL!!!
McCain is one clueless old fool! What a dumb ass! The American worker is the fundamentals of the economy? What the fuck is this idiot talking about? Workers are great and losing their jobs! McCain never studied economics so he has no clue about economic fundamentals.
John McCain is doing amiable-old-doddering-fool shtick right in front of our eyes, trying to throw this election to the better guy by putting out a ridiculous campaign.
Makes better sense to me than saying he's actually flipped his lid all of a sudden.
This old guys is very confused,, Is this best for the US ? This old guy been in the government all his life.. is this the first time he rad something towards the FUTURE,, please,, flush this..
mcBANE of america. hes a comunist or a nazi, workers of america indeed.most jobs have been shipped out and the manufacturing base of america has been shrinking dramatically. the american worker is out o jobs, its the chinese worker thats strong right now
Wow! He's starting to sound like George Bush! He has faith in the "American worker?" What the heck does that mean - The American worker is going to work 10 times harder to make-up for the "corruption" and "greed' on Wall Street?
Does anyone in the McCain camp check with one another before they say anything? The guy runngin the ads feels the economy is weak, McCains speech writer says the economy is strong. Do they all have alzheimers? WTF?
McCain is such CRAP!! He is trying to save himself with BULLSHIT, because of his DUMBASS COMMENT!!! The american worker?!?!?! BULL SHIT!!! u suck McCain!
The Economy is strong! WOW, unbelievable. Did you forget the DOW dropped 500 points? Highest unemployment rate, Wall Street is crumbling, all the major US companies are going under (Freddie, Fannie, Ford, GM, Indy Mac, Merril Lynch,Countrywide, next Washington Mutual, etc.)
Yet another lie to the American people. What's next McCain? More is yet to come from the Straight Lie Express you are now a pathetic puppet who has lost any semblance of respect for the American population.
Ah the stock market crash 1929 followed by the great depression followed by World War II ah the good old days Did someone say something about failing to learn from history and it repeating it self?
McCain has voted AGAINST a reasonable minimum wage for our 'hard workers' that he hopes are bigoted enough to vote against Obama despite the fact that McCain couldn't care less about them.
I'm a veteran of Iraq and McCain is a disgrace with his constant whining about being a POW, that's NOT what soldiers DO!
To top it off he voted AGAINST benefits for Vets as he felt that would be an incentive for them to not re-enlist.
He is a true disgrace and traitor who has BETRAYED us Vets.
Thanks for the clips, which are a textbook illustration of a very lame effort at disaster control. If claiming that workers are "fundamentals" (as if people could be fundamentals, or any other concept), is the best the McCain operation can do, god help us. Watching McCain mumbling and stumbling as he tries to equal workers and fundamentals is both disturbing and very sad.
Read George Orwell's (author of 1984) essay "Politics and the English Language". It discusses the ways politicians manipulate language to fool/persuade the masses. Everything being said here is downright Orwellian.
Actual John the American worker isn't doing well. The fundamentals are suffering because your party has done its best to deregulate Wall St. the last 8 years and this is our result. Lost jobs, lost pensions, life savings gone forever.
Americans are working harder, longer hours for less pay and paying into a Soc. Security system that's not going to be there for them when they need it. Basics like food and gas are skyrocketing, the housing market is sunk.
USA has proven that the Free Market Does not Work. Welcome to Socialism. Americans are fools if they really believe theu live in a Free Market "Democracy". And its not and never has been a Democracy. The USA hasalways been a Republic, which is ruled by a few.
Americans are brainwashed into believing the lies of their government while they toil 80 hours per week.
American lifestyle: work, work, work, drive to work, drive home, then pay debt.
I live in Europe and understand it very well. Your country is supported entirely by your government including now home loans and insurance.
You are the one who does not understand socialism. your government now owns AIG, abd paid for Bear Sterns, and owns Fredie Mac and Fannie Mae as well as bailing out automotive companies
He can't change a thing like Bush! There will be a democratic congress on matter who wins! This is a fact! If McCain gets in it will be just another 4 year stalemate!
Only Obama-Biden with the democratic congress can get ANYTHING done! Why waste your vote.
End the stalemate before we all go down the drain! Pelosi, Reid will not pass ANY Bush or McCain bill. They will still have all the POWER! That is how politics work! McCain equals zero change!
Rectally Derived. The Dem's controlled the house for 2 years the gop for 15 years before that. American workers are losing their homes at the current rate of 9K+ in August and he wants a committee, So in a few years you'll know why you lost your home. He is not in touch with the American worker, the same thing in each interview. Canned Response that basically says if your not for me your anti the American worker. Wasn't this a GW Bush tactic to get us into the war. Lipstick on a Pig Folks!
Anyone who thinks that McCain knows what he's doing on the economy needs to look over his buddy Phil Gramm's Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act of 1999 and also realize that by the fact of this particular legislation the corporate loopholes were created to help muddy the waters for congressional oversight and create a cone of silence to keep the unlawful practices of large corporations from sight of the American people.
As chairman of the Senate Commerce Committee for more than a decade, McCain did not have direct oversight of the financial sector. But he sat at the center of arguments between telephone, cable and satellite companies, almost always pressing for more competition.
"I'm always for less regulation," he told the Wall Street Journal in March. He added: "I'd like to see a lot of the unnecessary government regulations eliminated."
By Tuesday, McCain had retooled the message further, and tried to wrap the financial meltdown into his campaign's greater message about changing "the way Washington does business."
McCain has not always opposed government regulation. He supported efforts to allow the Food and Drug Administration to regulate tobacco. And he pushed to strengthen the Sarbanes-Oxley Act requirements, which were put in place after the accounting scandals involving Enron and other major firms.
McCain stumbled Monday when the financial crisis peaked, first saying the "fundamentals" of the economy were strong. After being hammered by Obama and the Democrats -- "What economy is he talking about?" Obama asked -- he said that he knows the economy is in crisis, but that the basis of the American economy, the American worker, is strong.
McCain offered his own TV ad promising to "reform Wall Street" and pass "new rules for fairness and honesty," adding: "I won't tolerate a system that puts you and your family at risk. Your savings, your jobs . . . I'll keep them safe," the ad says.
He did not describe how he would bring greater transparency to the process. His senior policy adviser, Douglas Holtz-Eakin, told reporters earlier in the day that there was no need for McCain to be specific right now.
The Economy can't vote for him, but workers can. That's why he stick to his lie and trying to start a new argument with a stupid comment; which if you're disagree with "the fundamental of the economy is strong," that's mean you don't support the workers, the same trick for the "troops." Well Mr. Senator you are so wrong. Maybe you're too old for this job.
The fundamentals of our economy are our fucking current economic policies led by Dubya. McCain supported these policies, and he thinks they are "fundamentally sound".
Now he is back pedaling and trying to cover up his stupidity by saying the fundamentals of our economy are our workers. Does he really think Americans are this stupid?
I really hope that even Republicans can see through this smoke screen.
McCain isn't very convincing. He smiled after he had reiterated his interpretations of the word; "fundamental". He even smiled more on fox. McCain isn't going to win, she should drop out today. He and Palin are going to go down in history as idiots, just like John Kerry & Edwards did.
i feel bad for the guy who had to prep him for this disaster in the waiting.
We all know what they've been saying. The economy is good. Because if it wasn't..they'd have screwed it. They did.
Today another major shift in markets due 2 Republican mismangement combined with flawed and corrupted agendas from Bush/McCain and the whole party. Their ideology is destroying America.
"we are the victim of greed exsess and corruption in wallstreet" Come on McCain Wallstreet is run by Republican industrialists, and financial backbenchers. Do the Republicans take the average American is that nieve to NOT realize that.
the american people are the backbone of the economy and not the fundamentals. Government rules and regulations are some of the fundamentals of our economy....mcCain/palin are a complete joke!
mcCain and palin have the iq of 50, I mean lets be serious because they both dont know anything about the economy which is the main topic in this years election. Then to make such a comment and to try and cover it up by using the american people as an escape goat shows the lack of intelligence of this poor old man........
See this is what I don't get. He talks about how the economy is struggling because of greed and corruption on Wall Street, but this is because of Bush's economic plan a plan which McCain supports. So in essence he's shooting down his own plan. This makes absolutely zero sense.
This republican ticket is a slap in the face to all Americans with common sense. Palin is an emotional ploy with no business being a John McCain heartbeat away from running this country the worlds largest economy that needs of an overhaul. She can't and won't make those decisions, the lobbyists who got us into this mess of deregulation will. We are the laughing stock of the globe. A harvard scholar or two candidates who don't know basic Economics and/or barely made it out of college....hmmmm
so what hes trying to say is that the american worker is a fault? because it sounds like hes making excuses for the american worker. saying stuff like he still believes in us and were the best and strongest. WTF?
our economy is shit right now and hes talking about the american people? way to try to win votes. now lets talk about how the dow jones dropped 500 points.
Lehman Brothers, Merrill Lynch, Fannie Mae Freddie Mac and AIG.....speechless
Dear Mr McSame, do you really think you will get away that easily? Are you saying the cause of our problems are the "American worker"? Are you saying we're in distress because the American worker hasn't worked hard enough or how do you expect them to solve the problems on their own? Do you know that many people work two jobs and barely make ends meet? You won't even change the system or protect their interests or invest in their health, edu or anything? I'm sorry McSame, I can't vote for you.
I'm sorry, but I just cannot believe in anything that John McCain says. "The American worker is the hardest worker"..? There are a lot of American workers out of work! How do we put the American worker back to work when jobs are continuously being outsourced? I don't think he realizes the true crisis our country is in. Bring back the jobs from overseas, then your "hard working American worker" will be happier.
like Obama said...it's not that he doesn't care it's that he doesn't know. Maybe he should spend a day in my shoes, then he'll def. know how the economy is doing. stupid rich ignorant bastard.
Guess what McMoron, the U.S. government is bankrupt and is dying. What we're witnessing is the collapse of the U.S. as we know it. Once that happens, it's lights out for both the Republicans and the Democrats as the government will shut down because there's no more money left to run it. Our income taxes don't even cover the interest on the national debt now.
With the U.S. gone, the people are still left, so what will happen? A new system of government will form. Very interesting times ahead.
holy shit, how many times can you repeat the 2 sentences that you memorized that appeals to American workers. "Oh he is talking about me, yippee, he does care, oh my, I must rethink this whole thing now" h ahaaa haa
...Ook! That's enough of that, Senator. It takes more than just "the American worker" to move the economy or screw it up. There are also executives and corporations and so on.
there is a clip on youtube of telling union workers why he supports guest worker programs is because there are jobs americans wont do...finally the lies are all catching up...oh, and who allowed the greed senator...who removed all the safeguards and oversight? you did sir...you did...have you no shame?

The only difference is now the economy is drastically worse. Where is the outrage from liberals and the media now?

For one I don't know if Obama is doing the best for our economy.
That said you seem to be reaching for a "gotcha" without actually listening.
Saying the economy is "fundamentally strong" vs. "we're going to focus on the sound aspects of the economy" are completely different statements...
It's like saying my collapsing roof is fundementally strong vs. I'm going to focus on the beams that are still holding up my roof. Get it?
They both used the word "Fundamentally" so what?

You tell me who's being dishonest.

Lets try this analogy one more time. I'm going to make it really simple.
There is a difference between saying:
1. My house is clean.
2. I'm going to focus on the clean parts of my house.
One says the whole house is clean the oher does not.
And yes McCain was an idiot for saying it SEVERAL times and was dishonest when he claimed he was really talking about the "american workers" please.
The only time McCain was honest was when he admitted he knew nothing of the economy.
oolong2 2 years ago
Neither McCain or Obama are capable of managing the economy. Both of them said the same thing, but only of them is a hypocrite about it.
You on the other hand, believe one of them should be criticized for it and the other one should be excused for it.
Enjoy the Obama Kool-Aid. I'm not going to debate an idiot, it's a no win situation. Make all the comments you want now. I'm done reading them.

Unemployment is low? No .. unemployment rate has shot up. People are losing their jobs.
Are job opportunities are expanding? No .. many of the opportunities are still being filled by guest workers from abroad.
Is compensation is rising? No .. it's not keeping up with increases in productivity or even inflation.
What health care and education are workers getting? zip
But it's the billionaires that are getting bailed out

McCain didn't mean "the American workers" when he first said it. It's something they made up afterward to do damage control. "And if you think the U.S. economy is in the crapper, you must be against THE AMERICAN WORKER." See how that works? It's disingenuous as hell, of course.
If Obama wants to play, he should "interpret" McCain as pinning the economy on the American workers, and "rush to their defense." The American workers are not to blame for this economy, Mr. McCain! See how that works?
tripillthreat 3 years ago
The economy is supported by the productive American workers who pays all the taxes and our American govt. now bails out corrupt mortgage banks run by greedy & corrupt CEO's. Thats the new definition for patriotism in the US. McCain says he has faith in the American worker so Im guessing we have corrupt and greedy illegal aliens or Martians controlling the biggest Investment Banks in the United States. ;) Aren't these corrupt CEO's American workers too?
PhantomsRose27 3 years ago
If the fundamentals of our economy are so strong then why is our Federal govt. bailing out the largest investment banks in the US? McCain has faith in the American workers because they will be the ones paying the higher taxes for those so called greedy and corrupt CEO's.

Yes, those fundamentals are strong. Wow.

Anyone who thinks that McCain knows what he's doing on the economy needs to look over his buddy Phil Gramm's Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act of 1999 and also realize that by the fact of this particular legislation the corporate loopholes were created to help muddy the waters for congressional oversight and create a cone of silence to keep the unlawful practices of large corporations from sight of the American people.

pipicat111 3 years ago 2
As chairman of the Senate Commerce Committee for more than a decade, McCain did not have direct oversight of the financial sector. But he sat at the center of arguments between telephone, cable and satellite companies, almost always pressing for more competition.
"I'm always for less regulation," he told the Wall Street Journal in March. He added: "I'd like to see a lot of the unnecessary government regulations eliminated."
pipicat111 3 years ago
By Tuesday, McCain had retooled the message further, and tried to wrap the financial meltdown into his campaign's greater message about changing "the way Washington does business."
McCain has not always opposed government regulation. He supported efforts to allow the Food and Drug Administration to regulate tobacco. And he pushed to strengthen the Sarbanes-Oxley Act requirements, which were put in place after the accounting scandals involving Enron and other major firms.
pipicat111 3 years ago
McCain stumbled Monday when the financial crisis peaked, first saying the "fundamentals" of the economy were strong. After being hammered by Obama and the Democrats -- "What economy is he talking about?" Obama asked -- he said that he knows the economy is in crisis, but that the basis of the American economy, the American worker, is strong.
pipicat111 3 years ago
McCain offered his own TV ad promising to "reform Wall Street" and pass "new rules for fairness and honesty," adding: "I won't tolerate a system that puts you and your family at risk. Your savings, your jobs . . . I'll keep them safe," the ad says.
He did not describe how he would bring greater transparency to the process. His senior policy adviser, Douglas Holtz-Eakin, told reporters earlier in the day that there was no need for McCain to be specific right now.
pipicat111 3 years ago
The Economy can't vote for him, but workers can. That's why he stick to his lie and trying to start a new argument with a stupid comment; which if you're disagree with "the fundamental of the economy is strong," that's mean you don't support the workers, the same trick for the "troops." Guess what McMoron, the U.S. government is bankrupt and is dying.
