Theodore, thank you for taking the time to really talk about this issue. I have been very harsh about today's music. From radio, TV (MTV, BET, & VH1), and the Internet is ridiculous and heartbreaking.
There should be a union in the music industry, just like it was a union in the movie industry, to stand up against this epidemic of this critical condition in the music business.
lol i like that reference to disco that it "ruined everything" ... thanks for backing up my hatred for things like auto-tune and lip-syncing... there are still great musicians now its just i'd like to see them top the chart sometime not some 14 year-old Disney-child or hip-hop artist relying on synisizers, voice changers, and auto-tune...well i guess one rant deserves another (btw I have nothing against hip-hop/rap but that genre seems to have it a lot worse)
wonderful video theos oppions must be taken wit a grain of usurpious tranquility" a true artist like us all" Theo knows the inside of a alwys crazy music industry and trys to brillently bring you insight on quirks that have haunted us all as REAL LIFE MUSICIANS that are in most cases better then who we,you see on tv and dvd, actors? highly paid duplicators of real life..well theo knows the scooop and he breaks it down , me ill tell the industry and those that believe it to kiss my **** well
for real Theo Knows what he's talking bout when it comes to music and witnessing the industry evolve , like me a REAL LIFE BABY BOOMER " IM the WORLDS RAREST RAP ARTIST ,i write produce and perfrom my own raps , created a art called POSITIVE RAP MUSIC & INVENTED GOSPEL RAP MUSIC BY PENNING AND PERFORMING WWJD WHAT WOULD JESUS DO? (IN 1983) SO adults who speak on music who have been invovled with it & r truly artist like mr mclendon we need 2 uphold thier oppinons.what were u doing in 1983? irap
While I happen to be one of these young adults who likes a lot music from that era, I think it's necessary to point something out. Baby-boomer music is much easier for young people to be exposed to, firstly because there's a lot of baby-boomers (obviously) whose children are growing up hearing the parent's music as well as the newer stuff. A ten year old could potentially love music from the twenties, but they'll probably never hear it unless they search for it.
These major record companies used to nurture artists back in the day. They would work tirelessly until they agreed on something that was personal to the artist, yet profitable to them as well(concept albums/"what's goin' on"/"dark side of the moon/the wall"/"songs in the key of life"/"Innervisions") Those days are GONE thanks to smaller budgets and technology. Labels used to budget $5-600,000 for an album, now it's almost 1/4 that. Thoroughly depressing, but nice post there Theo.
Another thing, the artist back then had endured more rough times in life, most of the young generation, not all, haven't really gone through enough to be able to express those feelings u refer to!!
This is an amazing video, I am 17 and a great appreciator of the music business, personally i believe that the manager of an artist will be the future to the success in the music industry. As record labels fade because of their unwanted promotional tools, the internet and myspace is all the tools that an artist needs to promote themselves.
Awesome video Theo. I'm a singer songwriter from New Orleans. As you said, it's true, the record labels shy away from any new songs that sound "dated" while at the same time those same record companies are folding left and right. Theo, you need to start your own record label and save the music industry. Maybe you could sign me as your first artist! LOL! Best wishes,
One of the songs I recently wrote and recorded has caught the attention of a local musician here: Aaron Neville. It's called "The Spirit of Louisiana". If Aaron does his version of this song, God, I could possibly make enough money to join in with you on this independent label idea. I'll keep you posted.
I appreciate you, I am only 29 happen to come from a family of muscians. So I know what you mean about the loss of soul and the loss of social responsibilty and conciousness. It's around, just very sparce.

"Musicians had a greater regard for music." is right on the money. Now they seem to have a greater regard for cash.

Naturally. But that is not the point.
The point is: the music of today is sorely lacking. We can go back to the 20's, 30's, etc. if you wish.
Baby-Boomers were also witnesses of the soul and rock & roll boom. This is vital beyond compare.

Plus, some of the early Disco music was not really that bad.
JMHO, Disco is a classic textbook example of what happens when a music style becomes WAAAYYY over-commercialized.....
