What an amazingly beautiful song and concert in such a wonderful setting. Unfortunately there's always one bad apple, and some no-class moron in the audience whistles after every song like he's watching a bar band. Oh well, not even a d-bag can ruin this beautiful music and setting.
Fantastic, fighting for your life on Christmas Day, such a contrast to what's going on around you. Evokes powerfull feelings with each verse...perfect
the police times were good. the solo-years were great. but with "if on a winter's night" and "symphonicities" he delivered his definitive masterpieces. i know, that this comment will be attacked by the most of you, but i think this way. this is amazing!
First time I heard this was at this concert which I was lucky enough to attend as a member of his fan club, just beautiful, and in the amazing setting of Durham Cathedral, it was just breathtaking. I love Sting doing his rock and doing The Police but I thought this was one of the most magical concerts ever!
does sting really have to sing in this? I mean: that gaelish sing fits the mood of this song much better, and it sounds a little weird with him. No offence meant of course, he is great singer, but this song just isn't for him. Howgh.
Likewise, I was attracted to Robert Louis Stevenson's poem 'Christmas at Sea' because it describes so well the powerful gravitational pull of home that Christmas exerts on the traveller. When Mary Macmaster starred to sing the Gaelic song 'Thograinn Thograinn,' a women's working-song from the Isle of Skye, I thought the melody would make a perfect counterpoint for the longing of Stevenson's sailor,... Blessed Christmas morn".
excellent - I've been following Sting since ages and I knew about Sting's newly released CD "If on a winter's night" which I did not really felt very excited about but then I was told about his life performance in Durham available in DVD. I bought it and I was really amazed. Thanks Gordon Mathew !
Brings me to tears. Reminds me a lot of me and my family.

One of the best Winter albums ever made - Sting does Winter vibes brilliantly in his music. Must be the Geordie in him.

I'm curious to know the language of the vocalists. Is that Gaelic???
MrDennisET 1 year ago
@MrDennisET Yes. I don't know the translation but I believe it was a work song, sung by common laborers as they went about their tasks.

@MrDennisET And:
Why Sting added the Gaelic:
Likewise, I was attracted to Robert Louis Stevenson's poem 'Christmas at Sea' because it describes so well the powerful gravitational pull of home that Christmas exerts on the traveller. When Mary Macmaster starred to sing the Gaelic song 'Thograinn Thograinn,' a women's working-song from the Isle of Skye, I thought the melody would make a perfect counterpoint for the longing of Stevenson's sailor,...
