He accepts religions as being the person's destiny (a Christian should not convert to Hinduism & vice-versa), but he states elsewhere that if you are Christian/Muslim/etc. that this is not your last life and you will be back to get it right. therefore, not every religion is true....if he believed Christianity were true he would not believe in re-incarnation, yes?

Yeah, it's not his voice... While it's a good work, i can only imagine how majestic and how mesmerizing would his speech would have been! From what i've read n known he had such a commanding voice that u'll give in urselves completely... And once uttered those words "Sisters and Brothers of America", there was a thunderous applause from the 7,000 people in the arena, which lasted for a complete 2 minutes...
Wonder if he imagined that the same fanaticsm and persecution will continue even after a hudred years when he was gining this speech. Every year more and more people are turning into or are being turned into fanatics for ulterior motives. Case in point being the Islamic terrorists who have been created and used by the west as a means to political domination and the continuing influx of moderates of Islam into extremism as a result.

This speech brought my memory of swami vivehananda when i read at the age of 9 since i was given a book about swami which had this speech as a prize for hinduism.
I had the honour and previledge of attending world conferences in my field.
I also had my friends of various religions and races at a hindu temple to be with me celebrating my birth day.I hope i lived up to Swami's ideals which my late father wished for his children when he had a large photo of swami in the house built by him,1955.
As with all religions people are ignorant more so becoz of their desire not to get into the depth of the matter.Some of the political leaders who are literally driven by greed embed into the heads of ignorant ppl some crap. I dnt think when the muslim religion was founded they wrote some crap abt killing other human beings. These are all a part of political agenda which is more so helped coz of the ignorance of ppl.
How can he claim that all religions are true when all religions contain so many contradictions between themselves? It seems to be an illogical claim. And also, some religions are very intolerent and violent. Can any Hindu here explain their position on the matter to me? Thanks.
It was memorised and spoken. Words appear artificial. I can clearly see the difference between natural flow of english and english spoken in the way it was written and memorised. I have poor vocabulory. I dint understand what swami said. I am not aware of the context too. I dont want to call him GREAT because in my view all people who follow gods are IDIOTS!
The greatest of the Swamis. I wish that I could only see him today, but he is a part of nature. Even the wisest and the most enlightened must perish from the Earth, leaving their knowledge and intellect behind.
However, no one may truly ever die, as long as he is remembered, is refered to, is thought of, a person cannot truly perish, as his or her knowledge still remain in the Earth.

You think so but the same 80% hindus who blindly follow the faith will readily accept his words. Cant say the same about Muslims or christians who cling to the dogma which is their religion. Better ot be a hindu with blind faith or an atheist than belong to the Abrahamic religions.
pls do not specify as Hindus, there are blind belief in all Religions, for example, see Australia is a Christian country, there is place called blue mountain, it is written and people believe that there are three mountains, three sisters became stones and it turned in to mountain.
It will take it's own time to get out of those traditions .These traditions are deep rooted. The good point is that this religion is adaptive and will only become good in the days to come if understood properly.

If you really want to know more about Swamiji then I suggest you go to one of the many Ramakrishna Mission spread all across India and the World and buy/borrow books from there. I put it to you, you'll be amazed by the no. of books they have.

As with all religions people are ignorant more so becoz of their desire not to get into the depth of the matter.Some of the political leaders who are literally driven by greed embed into the heads of ignorant ppl some crap. I dnt think when the muslim religion was founded they wrote some crap abt killing other human beings. These are all a part of political agenda which is more so helped coz of the ignorance of ppl.

How can he claim that all religions are true when all religions contain so many contradictions between themselves? It seems to be an illogical claim. And also, some religions are very intolerent and violent. Can any Hindu here explain their position on the matter to me? Thanks.

It was memorised and spoken. Words appear artificial. I can clearly see the difference between natural flow of english and english spoken in the way it was written and memorised. I have poor vocabulory. I dint understand what swami said. I am not aware of the context too. I dont want to call him GREAT because in my view all people who follow gods are IDIOTS!

The greatest of the Swamis. I wish that I could only see him today, but he is a part of nature. Even the wisest and the most enlightened must perish from the Earth, leaving their knowledge and intellect behind.
However, no one may truly ever die, as long as he is remembered, is refered to, is thought of, a person cannot truly perish, as his or her knowledge still remain in the Earth.
Keep these beliefs alive, and Swami Vivekananda will not die until humanity sees the same fate!

You think so but the same 80% hindus who blindly follow the faith will readily accept his words. Cant say the same about Muslims or christians who cling to the dogma which is their religion. Better ot be a hindu with blind faith or an atheist than belong to the Abrahamic religions.

It was a short and sweet speech by an Enlightened Soul which is full of significance for the survival of whole humankind. By addressing the audience as "Brothers and Sisters", he proved the catholicity of his outlook and love for the mankind. May his speech inspire the people of the world from generation to generation!

to comment on such mighty personality Swami Vivekananda is like to add a drop of water to the vast ocean of his knowledge and valour. While watching and hearing Him let us also not forget the circumstances that we went through to stand up firm there on the Dais in Chicago in 1893.

If you really want to know more about Swamiji then I suggest you go to one of the many Ramakrishna Mission spread all across India and the World and buy/borrow books from there. I put it to you, you'll be amazed by the no. of books they have.

This is one of the best speeches that explains the essence of the vedas in a terse and short approach. Only such a great disciple and guru could give such a extolling speech. I am sure many people in the audience must have found the contents of the speech unrealistic but it was Swami Vivekanada's responsibility to shed the ignorance of the people in the west and their false beliefs they had implanted in their brains about the vedic dharma and the religions originating from India.

It was his best speech. What a great philosopher, thinker, spiritualist,humanist and illumined soul he was. It is true that Hinduism accepts all religions as true and the spirit of universalism. It promotes tolerance and acceptance. Ofcourse some fanatics are there in all religions who misuse.
