Yeah. Main powered clocks that use the mains frequency as reference. Only if battery driven quartz clocks and mechanical were also affected - THEN I'd be mystified!

@vhfgtiuoiu Normally when it happens it's only locally. Because of a defect somewhere or in some apparatus resulting in noise on the power net. Here's just one of the bigger causes resulting in noise in a greather area. It's really no magic just a consequence of the way the clocks are made. They can be made imune to it by choosing another design but that results in other drawbacks.

I just wonder why they choose such old technique. Mains frequency normally is pretty good for causal time keeping. But hey this is 2011 and for over 20 years it has been no problem getting GPS or RC synced quartz clocks for ultimate precision. But hey. It's Italy and by many means the time stands still ;) But believing in paranormal causes - that's just plain dumb without harder evidenses. Until now - nothing technically unexplainable.

@vhfgtiuoiu What's hard to understand? The clocks counts each time the mains which is AC (= alternating current) crosses zero. Heavy noise on the line or noise when crossing zero results in that it very briefly crosses zero again and thus the clock counts too many crossings and the result is a speed up. It's no more magic than a light bulb.

Today is Nov 21, 2011...my 2 digital clocks were 45 minutes foward when my husband and I woke this morning. The clocks were in 2 different rooms and both were the exact time 45 minutes ahead of the correct time. We are baffled. This happened in Clearwater Florida. Any explanation would be appreciated,

noticed it here, in nz, i have to clocks that get further and further behimd, but are the same time both old powered by battery, all the other clocks internet, digi alarm clocks and cell phones are all the same but faste than the stop watch and old skool weather station, weird, no one speaks of it here though

Okay. Were the only clocks affected using the AC grid for their timebase? Were any battery powered or quartz referenced clocks affected? If battery powered quartz timebases were affected, that would be a change in mass or inertia of the crystal reference. Fascinating... Hyperdimensional....

This isn't difficult to explain. Power in the US is delivered at a 60hz frequency. This frequency is what clocks use to keep time. During the day, variations cause the clocks to speed up and slow down. However, we adjust accordingly to insure the clocks remain on time at the end of the day. So, all that happened is the frequency of the power was not monitored and adjusted correctly in Sicily.

@pyramonitor But that would cause the same condition over LARGE geographic areas. Not just a local region. Regardless of the current cycle aren't electronic devices like clocks governed internally to prevent improper time readings. In other words, if that was the case, the only devices that would be reliable in the home would be wind up watches and the famous atomic clocks.

A lot of clocks use the frequency of the power grid to calculate time. Even cheap digital clocks will use the grids frequency instead of a Crystal oscillator. If the grid/power generation speeds up or down, a lot of clocks will be skewed. This happened in a part of Western Canada last year, when they where upgrading a power line. Now if everyones wrist watches jump forward, I'd be looking for Doctor Who!

the question is what is really happen. It is hardly believable the electronic clocks from different manufacturers goes wrong the same way... what there would be interesting if it is possible to specify this to radio triggered or timeserver based clocks... than it would be a real time anomaly and it would be normal that normal clocks seems to go normal... very interesting... Wow that explanation is so not..."credible". There are digital clocks in everything, including cell phones, computers, security and air conditioning systems. If this really was an electromagnetic disturbance it would not have selectively targeted only digital clocks that are actual "clocks", in fact any electronic device should have been affected...randomly, not selectively.

That is odd. I cannot wear watches or have pocket watches on my person because they jump forward many hours and do not keep time. I wonder if this is a related occurrence. Electro magnetic pulses from one feed power line did this? This is hard to believe seeing as most clocks are not "plugged in" so that would mean it was caused by the radiation from said electromagnetic pulse. Very strange. Nice find Sheila!!
