A hilarious routine. It would have been cool if Costello had found a way to pop a blood packet in his mouth so that his face would have blood all over it when Abbott keeps telling him to turn it on. Maybe they wanted to do that but 1952 rules wouldn't let them.
Mike didn't give him a hand because he really couldn't;this skit was lifted fron 'Buck Privates' with Nat Pendleton as the SGT in the original role that Sid Fields took on here. Sid Fields did alot of the writing but the borrowing of skits from the movies was never lost here.

@hugatag not only she was tall, she was also very pretty. i like the way you said those idiots. it was such a funny show. h. brooke passed away sometime in 1999. i believe she was in her late 70's.
@d4seasons yes,you know personally I didn't care much for their movies however I found even as a child that their TV show was much funnier and alot had to do with Sid Fields as he wrote many of the TV episodes. A comic genius
@hugatag their early movies from 1941 to 1948 were pretty funny. after Frankenstein i didn't like the remaining movies. the comedy was slipping. their 1st season of the tv shows were good. the 2nd season weren't as good. Hillary was gone & so was banchecalute ( costello's real life brother in law ). you know, i just wished before the series was over costello would of beaten the crap out of abbott & mr. fields. laugh & enjoy.****
not true about bud and lou not talking off camera at this time period.when lou lost his son ,it was bud that suggested that the facility that they built and funded to teach kids how to swin and other activities be called the lou costello jr. youth foundation,at this period bud and lou were not speaking to each other, but after buds suggestion, they began speaking again, hey, these guys were together for 21 years.of course they had diffefences
1 thing id for sure, there willNEVERbe another comedy team in history that could be so perfect, bud knew when and how to bring lou back in when he whould go to far with his clowing.t.bud abbott was simply the greatest straight man ever!
@ilv244 i just wished L. Costello would of beaten the crap out of mr. fields & abbott. he seems he gets abused all the time. his daughter Chris is in her 60's now. she looks just like him.
I know this is bizarro land but, eh, don't you think Mike the Cop should give Lou a hand? Guess everybody's hand is broken except Lou's as they cannot turn the knob of the radio.
mike the cop never liked l. costello.read my review below. even hillary didn't help. mike (gordan jones) played a superhero in 1939. he died young too.****
@RPenta Yea, Mike could have stepped in but it should be noted that this was a bit from Buck Privates. Sid Fields wrote some of the scripts for the show & lifting old bits was common. (Besides,Mike didn't like Lou anyway!!)
this was so funny. as i kid i just watched it. now i noticed that mr. fields smacks his own hands. it's phoney but funny, laughable, & enjoyable. also it's a great sound system from a small radio. could you just picture l. costello beating up on abbott & mr. filelds ? just wished it would have happened. enjoy****
Bud Abbott was a TERRIFIC straight man. You'd hate him for berating Lou but really you see why Costello signed for Abbott to receive 60% of their salary. Lou said, "Comedians are a dime-a-dozen; but a good straight man is hard to find.".
"Anti-renter propaganda"? "Mr. Fields" was the WORST landlord ever seen in a situation comedy- greedy, scheming, always hounding Bud & Lou for that "six months back rent", and belittling and belting Lou whenever he felt insulted. Yet Fields remained their "friend"- until the rent was due again. Burlesque comedy always relied on "exaggeration"- and they were experts at it!
JohnKoroly, if there is an "edge" it may have been due to the fact that neither talked to the other at this point of the partnership EXCEPT when they were on stage or camera. Very sad but true.
They also has Sidney Fields writing many of the story lines and scripts. He was exceptionally talented as both a writer and performer. Catch Mr. Fields in the "Jail" episode.
