a great technic to swith your pokemon in the battle is to first exchange it with one of your stuid pokmon like the ones you have to have stength and stuff

then let him take the damage by the attack your foe used and then just change to the pokemon you want as soon your pokemon is KO and if your foe uses like full restore or like a non damaging attack u just use some hyper potions or whatever

It's not that hard to beat the game with just one or two pokemon, I probably did it when I was little a million times on pokemon red with just blastoise. I used the moveset of body slam, ice beam, surf, and hydro pump. (not bad but I wasn't a pokemon genus.)
