@alteregobob I'm glad for him and his family that he is off drugs. I wasn't implying that he should go back to his demons. I'm just saying I thought his music was more interesting back then. Maybe it was just a coincidence. Anytime anybody puts a positive side to drug use they get lambasted. In the end it's what he and his bandmates think about the new material that matters most. Anyway, when you have a choice you always go with life and family, everything else is just details.
If you were fortunate enough to lovo wilco at any stage of their career, comparing then and now when you have changed yourself is quite sad. Take the good and run. Man do I miss Uncle Tupelo.
The Gen Xers have not really spawned amazing talent. Jeff is an exception but he was at his creative best when he was using drugs. The baby boom crowd was reckless and fearless and the Gen Xers are their kids-we know how much that behavior hurts. Jeff is a family man now, and you want him to be a good dad, he expects that of himself and so do we-whereas Mick and Keith could impregnate countless groupies and not really give a damn.. I still think, if you listen, this song is really good.
@AmericanSon68 I couldn't agree more about Wilco. Jeff Tweedy was definitely better when he was on drugs. The last two albums have been disappointing to me. Hopefully this new one will have some more experimental qualities like Yankee Hotel and A Ghost is Born. If not I still appreciate Wilco for what they gave me in the past.
@ThePaintface Well, I love it and all he's done and am glad he's off the pain killers so I can enjoy his music for years to come, this is GREAT!!! He has the best band in rock now...
fan for life.. for all the ins and outs ups and downs over and outs..Jeff is the master of emotion with every song he writes and then plays with intention..I can never get enough WILCO.
If this is a preview of things to come for the new album, I'm excited. If a song can be good solo acoustic, it can be spectacular with the elements of a band. On the other hand, if it gets overproduced, a song can be ruined, but I think Wilco is a mature enough band to blend things nicely and stay away from "distractions".
Wilco (the album) was a love letter to fans and a cumulative retrospect of what they've done in they're career thus far. Now their back to forward progression in their sound. Of course it's done beautifully with a mature tone, as done with Sky Blue Sky. They will never become as experimental again as they did with YHF and A Ghost is Born, and in all seriousness, this is a good thing.
Yes I didn't like their last 2 albums and I liked their first albums way better but how can anyone make a judgement on this song by this performance? Its only him and his guitar..it could be totally different on the new album.
Please, tell me, what makes that song a good one? I really care about it.Just sounds pretty much the same since sky blue sky and always seems irrelevant. Once Tweedy said, "the world doesn't need more songs" so.. I just try to figure it out..
@santiagodemarte - Are you saying this is 'large" in french - grosse? This song clearly means something to him (Jeff) or else he wouldn't be singing it. I don't think you can truly understand music until you either play it (write) or completely forget yourself and listen & digest music in a blank context i.e. - There is no other music while listening to music. Only then can the beauty of something you don't understand be realized or seen. This song needs no fancy dressing that you search for.
Why do people always complain about bands who's older albums are always better? Wilco was great in the early years and they are even greater now! Every album has its own identity, and Wilco is going through a musical journey.... can't wait to hear the new album....
@weaseweasel shut the fuck up this song is fucking awesome, it is a very touching song about getting to know someone and falling in love. you have to aprecciate how a songwriter grows up he can't always write how he used to
I know it's a bit contradictory to post something like that after "ranking" Wilco's albums, but my ranking their work is an affectionate way for me to celebrate their music in my own life. Whereas, these battles about who is better/worse can turn really nasty and negative -- there's a vast difference.
@apacolipps I'm glad you clarified yourself, otherwise many sleepless nights were in my future. I am glad someone of such intellect can enlighten me in the ways of musical philosophy. I thank you.
Enough sarcasm, maybe. My little rant on Bon Jovi began with me coming across a comment that read "he does not have a good voice and he is ugly. :( " <=== That's an upside down smiley face at the end for anyone who's counting. When I saw that comment I took exception. I like Tweedy/Wilco.
@apacolipps Here's someone who is totally dismissing Tweedy's music for looks. American Idol bullshit. Then come to find out, the comment was made by a Bon Jovi super fan from Greece out of anger because of Tweedy's sarcastic comment about Jon Bon Jovi ruining rock music. So I initially objected her observation of Tweedy. Then she starts spouting of record sales... I'm with you on what music should be about. I could care less about record sales, stats, and grammys. They are pointless.
@apacolipps I used stats because logically explaining music theory to this chick was out the window. Remember her initial comment about this video was that Tweedy was ugly :( <==== (That's upside down smiley face for those of you counting) Anyways, I checked out her page and she has all these who's hotter videos between actresses. Anyways, she was enamored with 130million records sold and benchmark stats that I decided to play that game. I gave her meaningless stats. It was ridiculous.
Wilco vs. Bon Jovi. Hilarious. The perennial debates on who is better that I find on these boards never cease to amuse me. Why compare apples to oranges? Does there have to be a winner? Part of my dislike of most sports is the constant emphasis on statistics, polls and homerun races. Who gives a shit? Music is an elixir, no a survey. And, after all, there is no accounting for taste, so no one can be "right", anyway.
@benandjohnnyfans ...because beauty is a prerequisite for playing music? your a fan of "idol" i take it.. your wrong on both accounts. I think jeff would smile at your opinion.
@benandjohnnyfans i see bon jovi is one of your favorites. did you get mad when jeff said he thought jon bon jovi ruined rock and roll? sorry jeff isn't "pretty" like bon jovi. i don't think jeff feels the need to dye his hair and get plastic surgery, that's just not his style. jeff never needed a gimmick like makeup, hairspray, tassels, etc to sell records. its pretty much just been about the music. who gives a fuck what he looks like.
@jimborad1 yes you 're right i said bad things about ''jeff'' 'cause he offended jon bon jovi in public...but i can see that bon jovi is much more talented than this shit and jeff shouldn't have said that bon jovi ruined rock music 'cause jon is simply better than him...
@benandjohnnyfans your definitely entitled to your musical opinion. jeff made the comment somewhat jokingly. hes sarcastic. he made the comment because I think he took exception to jon bon jovi's opinion that itunes has ruined rock and roll. if you familiarized yourself with tweedy/wilco you would understand that jeff is very pro itunes and welcomes innovative methods to deliver music to fans.
@benandjohnnyfans case in point: yankee hotel fox trot. back when napster was big and metallica was suing it's own fans, tweedy was dumbfounded how a band could sue its own fans for trying to listen to their music. anyways, wilcos my favorite band. i guess bon jovi's yours. Thats fine. Different strokes for different folks. I personally believe Bon Jovi music is filled with complete superficial bullshit that caters to the pop masses. That's just my opinion. I would take any member from Wilco'
@benandjohnnyfans I'd take the musical ability from any member of Wilco and challenge Bon Jovi. It would be close. Bon Jovi would definitely win in a makeup, plastic surgery, and hair contest. But not musical ability. Sorry to break it to you. I've seen Bon Jovi live and I've seen Wilco live. Have you seen Wilco live? If not I suggest you do. Also, your initial statement about how you think Tweedy is ugly sounded extremely ignorant and childish. Again, who gives a fuck what musicians look like.
@jimborad1 i don't think that this ''Wilco'' that you mention has sold more than 130 million albums,am i right? Now as far as Jon's beauty is concerned i wonder why you are always mentioning his making-up as something bad.if you had more than 100000000 fans worldwide i'm sure that you would take care of your appearance, wouldn't you?and last but not least,i've heard so many people saying that bon jovi sounds great when in live concert-why should i trust you who listens to petty and ugly musicians?
@benandjohnnyfans Sure Bon Jovi has sold a billion records. As I said before, their music caters to the pop masses. Like American Idol fans. 200 Million people watch that show and I personally think its crap. It's all about perspective and opinion. I don't base my opinion about on a band solely on album sales. And by the way, you don't have to use quotes when mentioning Wilco. They are a real band. Some would say they are one of the best American rock bands out there.
@benandjohnnyfans In 2010, Rolling Stone magazine rate Wilco's album Yankee Hotel Foxtrot the #3 Best Album of the Decade in the 2000s. Check out the list. I don't see Bon Jovi anywhere on it. The list is made up of 100 albums from 2000-2010. I think Bon Jovi produced 5 albums during the 2000s and not ONE made the list. That's because real rock and roll journalists consider Bon Jovi music to be pop garbage. Sure they sell millions, but that's because the majority of listeners enjoy bullshit.
do you think that so many people would listen to him if they didn't like him or if he hadn't left an impeccable work behind him?just think of that.and if you could recognize the different types of music you wouldn't say this crap, that bon jovi is pop band.if you've ever listened to them they sing rock and they do it well.don't ever compare bon jovi with this bullshit that you listen to.and stop sending messages 'cause i m bored and i dont want to analyze it anymore with you
@benandjohnnyfans haha. your contradicting yourself. you say i should listen to different types of music and i shouldn't call Bon Jovi's music crap. But then you call Tweedy/Wilco music bullshit. I have listen to Bon Jovi. I don't think you have listen to Wilco. Take off your blinders. There are a million great bands out there that aren't selling 130 million. Here's a statistic: Tweedy/Wilco have won three Grammy Awards in the last 8 years. Bon Jovi has won ONE in in 28 years. They suck.
@benandjohnnyfans Bon Jovi was nominated for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010, but they didn't make it. They were denied because their music is complete garbage. I love how you don't comment on the facts I'm giving you: The Rolling Stone rating, the number of Grammy wins. Go ahead and continue to subject yourself to that type of music. Your missing out not listening to Wilco.
I wouldn't take this as much of an indication. Tweedy road-tested the YHF songs before that album dropped and, at the time, they seemed pretty basic, folky, and stripped of all the dressings that make them so powerful. Tweedy has pretty much assured us of an adventurous new LP, and I think this song will sound very different in its final form.
I adore Wilco, but the last album couldn't please me at all. It's all a little too unsurprising. This song seems to pursue that track. It doesn't really touch me. I'd really like Tweedy to return to his old habit of writing miracle after miracle, instead of just okay songs.
this song resonates with me because I have had the experience he sings about...heartbreak...loss...seeing something in a person he/ she is incapable of seeing..something strong, real, worth fighting for and yet it's almost over and the song is the last attempt to connect with someone already lost...tragically beautiful
@weaselweasel watch his interview on the Strombo Show (on the CBC) before he sang this song, Jeff addresses your sentiment---the new stuff can never compete with the old stuff because the older songs have the advantage of years and years of memories and emotional evocation...expectations on the new stuff, to bring on those same feelings leave people feeling disappointed, there is nothing that the artist can do about it...
@lostsidewalk I understand this point of view. But I'm a Wilco fan for many years. I was there when Yankee was released. Loved it right away. A Ghost Is Born? Same thing. Both albums were instant classics. I'd listen to them weeks on end. Can't say that about Wilco The Album.
@weaselweasel Ranking the Wilco albums from best to least-best, as it were, Wilco (the Album) does tend to rank near the lower end of the scale; but, look what it's up against: Summerteeth, YHF, Sky Blue Sky -- those are their Revolver, Sgt. Pepper, and Abbey Road, respectively, in my book. Set against the backdrop of those classics, W(TA) has a sublime, unprepossessing feel that grows on you. That said, I yearn to hear the 6-man lineup finally tackle some sonics a la Ghost.
@weaselweasel wilco are artists they create what they feel. like any other artist they expand in & out this way and that , but they are always identifiable . listen again and then again . i know you are gonna love it
Hmm, pretty simple folky song here. I wonder what this means if an indication of what's in store for the next album. I'm hoping they'll break the trend of the last couple of albums of playing safe music, but that doesn't seem to be the case here. On the other hand, I think it could end up being a little more stripped down than the last few productions. I couldn't imagine working Nels into a prominent role in this song and that's just fine by me. I'll keep dreaming about another Being There.
@jdschmelzer From what I've read they've recorded a bunch of different kinds of songs. The noisy stuff, the rock stuff, pop stuff, folk stuff. I hope they'll release a double album. Its a possibility !
@busstopratbag Yeah, there's reason for optimism. I read an article where he said he's been on a writing rampage- like 50-60 songs to choose from. Hopefully the quality is there.

Getting very curious about the new album though!

@lostsidewalk To me that always just seems like an easy way of saying "I can't write like I used to". :/

@weaselweasel
ps. this is tweedy solo, not wilco. he always sounds like this solo. give it a chance to see how it shows up on the new record.

@weaselweasel The best years, he seemed to have a foil to create with, Jay Bennett.
