If China is democratic or not, what the U.S. government has to do with it? it's china's internal affair, not yours. They are saying what the U.S. should do in USA's internal affairs? NO.
The questions posed by some of the audience members gives me optimism for an intelligent American response towards the Chinese rise to greater wealth and power.
The US military expenditures are equal to all that the rest of the world spends. Just how much more powerful does Mearsheimer need to feel before he can relax in his notion of a hostile, competitive world?
If China went bust the citizens would demand change and democracy would follow. The Commie Party is keeping people subdued with the prospect of wealth and if that were taken away the Party would be destroyed.
Yeah that's the solution, allow it to go bust. I can't think of better way to bring about a third global war. In the midst of the collapse of the global economy as a result of the Wall Street crash in 1929, economic insecurity led to Japanese aggression in search of markets to sustain itself; Hitler came to power in the midst of economic collapse in Germany as a result of the global crash. Good one!

He doesn't want it to get more powerful. He wants it to remain as powerful without challenge.
According to him, every country tries to become the Hegemon, only then does it feel absolutely secure.
The USA is already there, but there are others itching to take its place. Every forward step they take is a step back for the USA.
Therefore, maintain the current distance, he says, and as a precaution, for every forward step the others take, America ought to take two.
