It's like a war dude. Machine and corn was fighting for they country to help increase they country economy. It's also like battlefield hahaha I love that sound track ^_^
When did the seed co's change their preference to non shelled corn? We grew hybrids for Funks, Pioneer, Acco, and several others on our farm up till 1987, and we always shelled it with the combine or the mounted picker on the 450.
If you pick the seed corn on the ear around 25 - 18 percent moisture you can slowly dry it in special bins that are low temp. high air flow. Then shell it after it is dry. This will allow you to keep your germination up as much as possible.
Well, you can only do that if you buy the male and female corn yourself. What the deal is. The seed corn company gives us the corn to grow on certain parts of the farm. We grow it, irrigate it, cultivate it, spray it, and harvest it. The corn company comes and gets the corn. And they pay us for the services.

Can a regular combine be used to harvest seed corn or does it have to be a corn picker?
gywatha 3 years ago
It has to be a corn picker, they seed corn companies prefer the corn still on the ear. A combine takes the corn off the ear.
